I'm nervous

Today I have an appt with a new Health Care Provider. She's got experience treating pain patients.

I've been seeking assistance with the excruciating pain(the hardware in my spine from my accident is causing more trouble than anticipated!) now for the last 5 years. I do everything that I'm told. I follow the rules. I take care of myself. I don't drink, do drugs, and I try to exersize as well as eat healthy. I keep processed foods down to a bare minimum, and eat whole. I would like to eat clean too now that I've made eating whole a habit.

The last Nurse Practitioner I had yelled at me for not wanting to be my drug dealer "I'M NOT YOUR f***ing DRUG DEALER!" She once said. The other one in that office said "You're fat. Of course your back is hurting you." And the last one wanted to place me on methadone. Hell. f***ing. No. What I was doing was working. I was doing it exactly as prescribed.

Now, I'm with a Doctor that is a sports medicine practitioner I've just found out. He doesn't want to prescribe me anything and thinks that ibuprofen will do. He doesn't want me comfortable enough to ride my horse or my motorcycle or do other such dangerous activities. Well, now I'm in so much pain that sleeping isn't happening, and it's wearing thin. He's also super expensive and I'm paying him to do nothing for me. Out of pocket. I have no insurance.

This new NP will hopefully listen to me, see my xrays of my spine, see what I've been through and also help me figure out the widespread pain and flare ups that I've been having.

My joints hurt. They get so inflamed that my skin turns red around them, along with every other factor that points to fibromyalgia. I have 100% of the markers.

I'm nervous, and I don't want to get yelled at. But, if I don't stand up for myself, nobody else will. I guess I just keep looking for someone I can afford and that will help.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom?

Alsgal, I am sorry to hear that you are in such physical pain. And how distressing that no matter what you do, or what doctor you go to, nothing seems to help. Unless you have oodles of money and premium health insurance, it is hard to find a caring doctor these days.

I am sorry that I have no real words of wisdom for you, and I understand about having no one to stand up for yourself but you. It is the same with me. The only thing I can offer is to keep you in my prayers.

I am going to take a crack at this one. Bear with me if I ramble a bit. I too have had a lot of experience with pain. Most of mine is arthritic. If you noticed my x ray in the thread "Post Pictures Of You" you can see my hand for yourself. It got so bad I had it surgically repaired. I have had back problems too. I went to a chiropractor for a while and that didn't do squat. I am going to give you two pieces of advice that I have found to be very helpful and they both have been discovered by me recently. One is something my mother suggested on a recent trip to visit her. I am not into taking drugs if I can at all possible I avoid them. She suggested a "over the counter drug cocktail" for me to take that would help my overall pain throughout the day. Damned if she wasn't right! Every morning I take (3) 200 mg Ibuprofen's and (2) 500 mg Acetaminophen's. I also take an allergy pill also because I have terrible sinus issues. I must say I was skeptical of my mothers advice, but damn if it didn't work! It is very subtle but as the day progresses I feel better and better and less and less pain. I don't have the terrible pain in my hand or the other nagging one's all over either. My mother has had back surgery, knee replacement and a bone fusion on her foot similar to the procedure I had on my hand. My dad has been treated for arthritis his entire life. They know a thing or two about pain. Anyway I hope this helps some and just know you are not alone............Just my opinion as always :codger:

Either way...... Good luck to you my dear :rose:

I can only imagine how unbearable the pain is. Will keep good thoughts for you and hope that you find a good health provider. Sounds like the person who yelled at you had a screw loose.

I'm sorry you had to go through that.

My humblest apologies for forgetting the second piece of advice from my earlier post  . I got so caught up in the pain thing I forgot the second part. This one is quite simple and you mentioned it also. The better physical condition you are in, the better you feel. Your mood, self esteem etc. It is obvious from your pictures that by any definition you are physically beautiful  . Being in excellent physical condition is obviously a totally different matter. I have just found throughout my life the better shape my front is in the better my back feels and so on. This part is definitely the harder piece of the puzzle for sure. I am only speaking from my own experience and could be wrong of course. Best of luck either way.................. :codger:

I thought that Ibuprofens kill the kidneys? Or is it liver?

I would like to give your mother's cocktail a try as I have carpel in my right wrist and thumb, arthritis in one finger on each hand, and both of these "issues" can be, on any given day, like a toothache.

I don't know if this helps, but doctors have been scrutinized a great deal for the number of painkilling prescriptions they have written in their careers and the risks that have come with them. So the doctor is probably under a lot of stress from other patients. However, that thing he said about your weight is still rude as hell. Maybe if you catch him at a better time and ask him to apologize, then he will and it will release some of the tension. Of course, if he doesn't apologize and decides to be a jerk about women and their weight, then you should probably see someone who is more careful than that about your emotional needs as well as your physical needs. It may sound completely liberal/New Age, but the correlation between emotional and physical pain has already been proven to exist.

Lorraine. It may eventually damage something and I am sure there are opinions out the wazoo about that. If you saw my x ray on another thread you can see the problems I have. I just know it came from my mom who I trust with my life. I used to take a lot of Aleve (Naproxin), but this works better and hasn't bothered my stomach either. :codger: Edited by Narpet

I understand where you're coming from. I've had similar problems. I also have Fibro and have several bulging discs in my lower back. I also have no insurance so I know how doctors can kind of look down on you for that. I've been on Neurontin for about a year, but would like to get off of it. It works for the pains down my legs but the side effects are no fun. I've found that caffeine definitely ups my pain so I try to keep away from it. Edited by EagleMoon

Hi everyone!

I had little cause to be nervous. After my initial exam, and showing the Dr. my X rays and my past medical records, she said she would take me on. I have a final mental evaluation today before they can start prescribing my medications. She's going to refer me to a scholarship program for OHSU to get more tests done to find out if I do have RA, Lupus or Fibromyalgia.

After talking with me and asking about my life, she said "It sounds like you have your life in order, not many people can say that. I would love to start treating you and helping you out so you can do the things you love again." I about cried. They see I'm not depressed, but very much so missing my activities.

As for the non narcotic avenues for pain management, they don't work. I've done 'cocktails' before. I've done 3 years of alternative and holistic healing, and nothing even comes close to touching this pain. All they do is either hurt me worse, make me very sick, or nothing at all. I tried just about everything and tried a narcotic medication after I was prescribed one for a bad migraine I was having one day. (my blood pressure went through the roof for stress and the amounts of pain I was in!) That's the only thing that helps. I have a 'cocktail' of non narcotic supportive meds to help. It works for me. I want nothing stronger. I don't even feel loopy on them. I feel normal.

That's all I want. I want to feel normal again. I still have breakthrough pain, but it's manageable.

Having hope for my loved physical activities again is so uplifting. Having someone that listens to you and doesn't say unprofessional/rude/disrespectful things is refreshing.

:) :rose: Thank you all for the care. It really helped calm me.

You will be in good hands at OHSU! ( I used to do research there)

The only other thing I can think of that you didnt mention (not recommending it) would be epidural steroid injections. Chronic pain is the worst, I am sorry :( Hopefully you will have some breakthroughs. The only medical advice is that if you are taking "cocktails" or a narcotic, drink a TON of water

Have you actually been diagnosed with carpal tunnel and arthritis? It sounds like you may be suffering from tendinitis and if that's the case a massage therapist could possibly give you relief and possibly cure you.

And Kris, you know how I feel about the medical profession. I've always thought that if you saw a natropath and blood analyst you may be able to find out alternative care for your issue. All that metal in your body is most definitely the cause of your pain. Having treated numerous people with metal plates, pins etc... In their bodies I can tell you that it's most def a primary cause of on going health issues misdiagnosed as autoimmune disorders.

I hope this health care professional helps treat the cause if your pain and not just the symptoms.

I am really shocked at the behavior and the things said to you by health professionals. You have no reason to be treated that way. :eh:

I don't have much to recommend in the way of treatments or options. I have had my share of injury and accidents. Currently I have a knee that isn't quite on the socket, I have degenerative disc in my neck from two accidents (one on my bike and one in my car) Right now I find it hard to walk because of issues I am having with my hip. I can tell you what has helped for me, but your case seems much more severe than mine. But my healing has included yoga, a vegetarian diet, watching the acidity of my foods to try and keep inflammation down, acupuncture, juicing, and keeping it light on the weight machines. The weights really helped even though I confess they were very uncomfortable at first and would leave me aching for days but as I built the muscle up the pain greatly decreased. Anyway, hope some of that helps. I know how tricky it can be trying to deal with these issues and having to go from one health care provider to the other and the costs... don't even get me started.

Aw, Kris, I JUST saw this and am sorry you went through all that. I know it's been a few weeks but hope things are still on the upswing.

If I'd been there, I'd have cuntpunted that nurse practitioner who said those horrible things to you. Then guess who'd have needed pain meds?

Please don't think I am making light of your post because I am sincerely not. You used a term/verb for what you would do to the nurse practitioner that I have never heard in all my 53 years on this planet. Just wanted you to know that I may want to borrow it at some point in the future if the need arises........ :)

No, I have not been diagnosed since I avoid doctors unless there is no other alternative.

Since my original quote was the start of all this I figured I should chime in once again. I still take the cocktail every morning and have tried to go a day or two not taking it. I can tell for sure when I don't. The 9 screws and plate in my hand hurt like hell when I don't. Also I have a left elbow issue too that hurts when I don't. My hand barely hurts, my elbow too, any if at all when I take the cocktail. What it does to my old ass kidneys or liver or whatever, I have no idea........ I live for today in this case as tomorrow is not promised anyway....... :) Edited by Narpet

The reason I asked is because I see clients come in that have been told they have to have surgery for carpal tunnel and I look at them and feel their wrist and start applying pressure to areas and realize that they don't have Carpal Tunnel at all and they notice a change after treatment for tendinitis or pronator teres syndrome (the muscle in your arm near your elbow to your mid fore arm on the inside or even something caused by tight neck muscles. It's prolly one of the most misdiagnosed conditions out there.

The recovery time after the surgery is very long and painful and if it can be avoided then why not find out.

I had Carpal Tunnel surgery at the same time as my bone fusion surgery. The Carpal Tunnel was basically done as a precautionary measure and not as my primary surgery. I am scheduled to have another surgery in January to remove the screws and plate.....

She wouldn't treat me. It took the nurses fighting her to even have her fill my heart medication. She wouldn't listen to a word I had to say and then said she will tey to get my money back and I never saw her after that.

I wasn't even asking for more than 10 narcotic pills and a script for flexoril. That nurses were arguing in front of me.

This has been a really shitty day. After I left work, all hell broke loose.
