I am so SICK of people saying sloppy, no technique blah blah...what about FEEL/CREATIVITY FCOL, not everyone has to sound like a damn metronome. Yes to Page and Yes to Hendrix, they command more in their little finger than most players today. And please leave the Kurt Cobains out of it, they're not even worth mentioning in this, and I love Nirvana. I still say Clapton is way overrated though, sorry, especially when you compare him to the creative genius of Page or Beck. No offence Ancient, just the way I see it fwiw.

Hammet too, a lot of his solos have the same shape - sound the same?

Oh he's awful; predictable and boring. Wanna take an axe to his damn wah as well. As far as metal, he is the clear winner!

Ok, that's enough rage for one day... :rage:

Clapton has great tone and technique, but I don't see him as a tremendous innovator. Page gets dogged as having ripped off the classic bluesmen...but how does Clapton get a pass? Eric is obviously an amazing talent, but his godly status among the rock critics makes him the most overrated for me.

Slash... Definitely Slash.

Maybe the guitarists of Metallica too, James and Kirk. There's one time I can listen to Metallica: when someone else is covering them.

Jimmy Page. He might have been a creative genius in the studio and a great guitar player but he doesn't belong on the top of every "best guitarist" list like he seems to be..

Sammy Hagar, he is definately overrated

What? You hardly hear anything of Hagar's playing. If anything he's underrated- not a guitar god, but the man can play.

It was obvious that he pushed EVH as well in terms of upping his game. Hagar is no slouch

guys like petrucci, malmsteen and holdsworth really seem to enjoy what they're doing. they've dedicated their lives to playing guitar! and somehow you all have the magical power to read their souls.

I'm writing in response to OP statements about Ted Nugent, whom I don't enjoy all that much. He's soul-less, his chops suck, and he's way overrated according to the OP. Well, I disagree.

The OP has given us displays of Holdsworth's virtuosity plenty of times, yet I can't think of one memorable thing he wrote. I've spent lotsa dollars and much tim trying to appreciate his music.

Can anyone give me something of Holdsworth's that will make me think he's nothing more than some shredder who's "a really great phraser"? Where's the feel? Where's the soul?

His guitar playing is stunning in terms of playing weird shit. But according to Treeduck he's speaking an " advanced harmonic language". But it's so far out there people sleep during his shows. Or should I say, guitarists who drag they're significant other to see him play.

Please give me some stuff that will help me see the light...I'm not for slamming AH...I'm just applying the same light TD did on the Nuge, to Allan Holdsworth. As the great musicians from the band Poison once lamented "Gimme something to believe in"

Along the same lines as Malmsteen, I'll nominate Steve Vai. All the dexterity in the world. Completely bloodless though. Which is why, incidentally, Joe Perry doesn't belong on this list. Perry may not be a virtuoso by the standard of EVH, Vai, Malmsteen, etc., but he's written some great tunes, and plays what's appropriate for them. And I don't hear many people overrating his playing ability.
