Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I know he was featured in guitar mags , but I don't think anyone ever claimed he was a great player. Although I do believe he inspired young guys of that generation to pick up the guitar and just go for it.. He really was responsible for making guitar chops passé .

My nomination is for Ted Nugent who, between political rants, seems to be living under an illusion that he's viewed as some kind of guitar hero for the masses. And he does seem to have some kind of good guitar playing reputation with some people, which I can't really understand how he achieved.The reason I nominate him, firstly his tone which is awful, he's always calling people soulless but it's his tone that's the most soulless of all. His chops are terrible too, if guitar playing is a language Ted's guitar speaks gibberish, just like he does in English. His songwriting and riffs are also really, really weak as well. I think there's one album that's not bad, the first one from back in 1975, and a couple of songs after that, everything else is forgettable bullshit for the most part.

I knew that would definitely get a response from him. Holdsworth is remarkable.

 

Of the players mentioned earlier, there's one with which I disagree. Jimmy Page was an extremely skilled studio player and he created one of the greatest rock and roll bands ever. He interpreted the blues with his own flavour even though he "borrowed" a great many riffs. Hardly unique in music though.

 

I think the most overrated is Yngwie Malmsteen. :o Technically, very talented but completely lacking in feel. I'm in the Ritchie Blackmore (*the* greatest, imo :guitar: ) camp.

BLACKMORE: He's always been very nice to me, and I always get on very well with him. I don't understand him, though - his playing, what he wears. His movements are also a bit creepy. Normally you say, "Well, the guy's just an idiot." But, when you hear him play you think, "That guy's no idiot. He knows what he's doing." He's got to calm down. He's not Paganini - though he thinks he is. When Yngwie can break all of his strings but one, and play the same piece on one string, then I'll be impressed. In three or four years, we'll probably hear some good stuff from him.

I d say with holdsworth its his musical approach to playing he guitar. He can shred sweep etc...fast, but

what makes him 'holdsworth' is his phrasing voicing and progressions. Musically there is no one else like him, you'll be glad to hear

Kirk Hammett. Absolutely dreadful, but has achieved mega guitar god status.

 

Other worthy contenders for me are Jimmy Page (after all this time, still can't bend in tune or do clean slurs ) ,the Edge & Cobain, who both just plain reek.

 

JMO, all the best to people who like these guys, no offence meant at all.

I was thinking along the same lines when I first read the initial post. Ted has plenty of songs that, while easy to play, have memorable hoks that people want to hear again and again. Super-technical guitarists frequently strike me as soulless, as you say it. A collection of difficult to play notes for sure, but nothing I really care to hear twice. It makes me think of a concert I once saw with Satriani followed by Steve Miller. Everyone cover band play Steve Miller, and they do, because they are songs people want to hear. Satriani, while technically brilliant, has produced little in the way of enduring music. Which is why at the concert I referenced the crowd yawned through his set and came alive once Steve Miller started to play.

No I like Angus, he is what he is, a bluesy hard rocker with an exciting attack, good tone, a lot of memorable riffs, some decent solos and the strongest neck muscles in rock! :guitar:

This thread is starting to get overrated. This isn't the guitarist you don't like thread. It's overrated guitarist. I disagree with Hammett, Clapton, van Halen, malmsteen in the thread. They deliver exactly what they claim to and what most say they can. You want to get crazy? I think Hendrix is overrated. I like his songs and he did usher in a new style but his playing was really sloppy and too noisy. He isn't the virtuoso he was claimed to be. I'll be in hiding for a bit.

Yeah Eddie is far from being just another shredder, if anything, with the backlash against him in some quarters, he's underrated.
