Rush Vinyl Collection...the Normal and the Abnormal

As I wrote in the very post on this forum, my hope was to engage discussion with other collectors on what vinyl is "out there"; and I have to say, the participation has been fantastic. Thanks!

I also mentioned, that as time allows, I wanted to share photos of some of the "odds and sods" from my Rush vinyl collection...in hopes to provide a resource for other collectors to help identify what they have in their collections or what's out on the market. Quite often, I go on eBay or other vinyl market sites and the descriptions of the items for bid/sale are horrible. I know...buyer beware...but when I'm looking to make a purchase, its comforting to know that the item I'm buying is "real" and does exist. Sometimes, I just get fascinated with what's out there. Hopefully, by reading this forum you feel the same way.

So as promised, here are couple more photos of some items that just arrived in the mail. I was thrilled to get these for two reasons:

1) They are my first Rush Japanese pressings of any sort

2) Afterimage...I don't think that this track was ever released anywhere besides Japan...so its cool to know that this is "it".

Both arrived in absolute MINT condition!

More to come over the weekend!

Don't want to derail the thread!! This is about amazing Rush vinyls! THe GUP "egg in a vice" is one of the best Rush images, imo. Thanks for sharing!!

No worries...vinyl and the tools we use to play the discs are all relevent. Seriously...I just called my grandmother to ask her if her floor model still works! LOL

Yeah...the "egg in a vice" image is one of my favorites...the definition of grace under pressure!

By now, anyone who has been following this thread would know that I love the obscure. Though sometimes not "rare" by the conventional description of the word, I like to label obscure as those items that come along once in a while (or once in a lifetime in some cases) that as a collector, you simply have to have them. I had the pleasure over the weekend to attend a local CD and record show...an assembly of tie-die wearing, Zeppelin-hawking fellas hell-bent on sharing the vinyl word with anyone holding money in their pockets. I was one of those fortunate souls who was drawn to their wares. I walked out of there with 4 items...2 Rush obscurities and 2 other "grails" for me (although this isn't the place, I'll satisfy your curiousity...first Canadian pressing of the Stones' Sticky Fingers in NM condition with working zipper, and a NM box pressing of George Harrison's legendary Concert for Bangladesh...great stuff). But you're not here to talk Stones and Harrison.

Here are my other two findings:

1) I LOVE historical recordings such as radio broadcasts. I actually have several of them in my collection that as soon as I can get a couple of hours free, I'll take the pics and share them with you. In the meantime, I stumbled on a very rare MINT copy of the Anthem-release Signals Radio Show. Now it didn't come with a call sheet, but you can see the contents on discogs.com. There is something about listening to a snapshot in time including all the corny radio ads that 1982 would have produced. Great Stuff!

http://i.imgur.com/friosen.jpg

2) This one was a "shot in the dark" as they say. If you've ever been to a record show, it is quite literally rows upon piles upon more rows of crates of vinyl. Most vendors sort them alphabetically, but if you don't have the time and patience, it can be overwhelming. At the show, I only had a half hour to scavenge due to other commitments yesterday. Like rolling the dice, I stumbled upon a NM Russian copy of A Farewell to Kings. While the picture shows the cover has some ringwear and a bit of a crimp (considering the thinness of the paper and the age...), the vinyl is pristine. Ten dollars. Considering the historical significance of how music was smuggled or illegally manufactured in Russia during the Cold War, this is a really cool piece to have. No labels. No catalog numbers. And the lyrics are printed on the back. I haven't played this yet, and I'm not expecting sonic excellence, but to know that someone in Russia had this as part of their vinyl collection in times where music of this sort was not sanctioned by the governing bodies? The things people will do...

OK...so the item I'm going to show here is proof that I am a completeist (my wife says obsessive compulsive). Over the past little while, I've been receiving a pile of new Rush discs, from 45s to pic discs to rare bootlegs to the truly obscure (I promise...as soon as I can find the time, I'll take the pics and share them with you). However, this one I've particular been looking forward to its arrival. There is nothing legitimate about this item, but I simply HAD to have it. I'm almost not even concerned about the sound (which I'll test drive tonight)...it just looks SO COOL! I've Googled this thing to death and all I can find is another forum discussing its legitimacy (see above), but no one can confirm it. It cost me a pretty penny to bring in and I know that the band didn't get anything for it, but as I mentioned in my first statement...I'm a completeist.

Check it out and let me know your thoughts...

That does look sweet. Almost has the look of legitimacy too. To me, it looks like the Atlantic and Anthem logos are off slightly. But that is a nice piece and I can understand why you took the plunge.

I have those Japanese 45s too. Very nice. I love Japanese pressings, but I don't have many of them.

I used to go to record shows myself. Unfortunately they don't have them much anymore.

I got my Signals Radio show at one too. it seems to be the most common of the Anthem Radio Specials, but they are still quite rare.

The Japanese Fly By Night picture disc has been around for awhile, if it is real it was a small press run.

And that is one cool record player!

I gave the TFE a quick spin over the weekend and it sounds as good as any of the other pieces on vinyl. Whether its legitimate or not, I'm thrilled to have it in the collection. It adds some "completeness" to the studio releases.

My city has record shows twice per year...other cities within an hour of here have them lined up through the year. Most of the same vendors (like a travelling circus) so its hit and miss. I did come VERY close to one of THE Rush vinyl grails on Sunday though. The vendor who I bought the radio special from had a copy of Not Fade Away/Can't Fight It. There it sat...4 feet away from me. THE grail. I wasn't in any position whatsoever to buy it (my wife would have done things that aren't suitable for mention in this forum), but I did ask him what he was asking. The price? $800. Within the range of prices you see for this when it pops up, but wow...

If I had the extra money though...

One day

This came in the mail yesterday. Nothing TOO rare, but a nice little promotional addition to the collection. (Sorry...I forgot to take a photo of the front cover!)

These are so cool- I would have bought the In Store Play Special album for the Thin Lizzy tracks alone.

I'm going to throw it on the turntable this weekend when the house is empty (read: PLAY LOUD!)

Do you have the Time Stand Still picture disc?http://www.ebay.ca/itm/RUSH-UK-Import-Juggler-Picture-Disc-TIME-STANDS-STILL-LP-/140760019084?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item20c5f3708c

Yup...really cool looking item. There is also a 12" single of Prime Mover (RUSHR 1412 - Vertigo UK) where the picture sleeve is holographic...that is, if you hold it a certain way in the light, the image shifts.

I just found some Roll The Bones CD Singles on Ebay.

http://www.ebay.ca/i...984.m1497.l2649

One of them contains Roll The Bones, Where's My Thing?, Superconductor and It's a Rap Part 3- Neil speaks. The other one contains the tracks Roll The Bones, Anagram and It's A Rap Part 2-Geddy speaks. Now I've gotta find the third or is it first disc with Alex on it.

Edit: I just found http://www.ebay.ca/itm/RUSH-Roll-the-bones-3-Track-Limited-Edition-Shaped-Picture-Disc-w-Orig-sticker-/390542738128?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item5aee2942d0 on Ebay. It's the 7" version.

Not 100% sure...While I still have all of my original CDs put away somewhere, I haven't paid much attention to the CD single world for a long time, so I can't comment too much. While I enjoy the portability and availabilty of digital music, I'm a vinyl guy through and through. Questions about Rush on vinyl, I'm all over it.

I am aware of the item you're speaking of though...check out the website www.rushtime.de. Ralf is a Rush collector from Germany whose collection (both CD/vinyl) is so beyond huge, its hard to imagine that all of what he lists was ever made available. My vinyl collection is substantial, but ridiculously small compared to his. Another one to check out is www.resistmusic.com. Hopefully between these two, you can find the answer regarding the elusive third CD. Good luck!

Looks like you found the "It's a Rap trilogy" as I like to call it. They were released separately at the same time.

I think Roll The Bones (single and album) has the distinction of having the most promotion of any Rush album when you consider the singles, commercial and promotional on various formats.

You're probably going to hate me, but I think I have an extra "Neil speaks" around here if you want it. (For less than the ebay price obviously)

That In Store Sprecial is pretty cool too. I like the bio on the back also. This seems to be the first promotional Rush compilation that has surfaced to date.

As a collector, what's worse? Missing out on that "once in a lifetime" item, or actually buying it, and finding out afterwards that you could have got it for far cheaper, or at least easier (read: buying its straight up as opposed to getting into a bidding war.)

OK...so there is a copy of Not Fade Away/Can't Fight It on eBay right now. A couple of days ago, the starting price was around $250...VERY reasonable for the item in question. With over 7 days left, the high bid is...get ready for this...A WHOPPING $2,000!!! But here's the catch...

This is not just the 45 in near mint condition, but an added bonus. Remember how we started talking about "grails". Tell me...if money wasn't an issue, would you go for it?

In addition to the original single, its a bundle which includes the original test pressing of "Not Fade Away"! Think about this for a minute...this is the ONLY one in existence...ever! This is THE piece that started Rush as we know them today.

The question I asked about...would you go for it...my answer...ABSOLUTELY!!! So if I start going through that jar of pennies in the closet, I wonder...

Here's the link so you can cry: Not Fade Away - Rush

So this just arrived for me at reception.

Now, on the surface, it might not seem THAT rare, but consider this for a moment...

Promotional releases in Canada, even though Rush was from here, are fairly hard to get ahold of. The number of radio stations in Canada that would play Rush's brand of music were quite limited, compared to the US or Europe. Strange as this may sound, the Canadian issues vinyl over the years has a higher degree of "collectivity" than those items from other parts of the world...simply because there just weren't that many produced.

If you recall the Grace Under Pressure Tour, the version of The Weapon was preceeded by a strange sort of monologue from a character who looked like a washed-up Count Dracula. He was affectionately known as Canada's Own Count Floyd (aka Joe Flaherty from SCTV). The 12" promo release of The Weapon/Digital Man (as shown below) is the only non-live version of the song with the Count Floyd intro. The Signals album only had the radio edit. For that reason alone, its even more evident why this disc is really hard to come by and for those who do have it, are reluctant to hand it over.

I have a couple more of the Canadian Anthem 12" promos to feature for your viewing pleasure in the comping days. Stay tuned.

What's that Geddy Lee great bass features thing? Is it an interview or a bass solo?

It is a radio broadcast recording from Rolling Stone Magazine Productions distributed to radio stations for play during the week of 9/13 - 9/18 1982. It's called "The Continuous History of Rock and Roll - Great Bass". It's an house long broadcast featuring The Who, Cream, Argent, The Kinks, Genesis, and of course, Rush. The Rush tracks on the broadcast are Freewill and Tom Sawyer. Each day of the week, a different artist is featured on Side Four:

9/13 Jack Bruce

9/14 John Entwhistle

9/15 Jim Rodford (Kinks)

9/16 Rick Wills (Foreigner)

9/17 Geddy

9/18 Mike Rutherford

I haven't listened to this yet as it only came in the other day. I've been collecting radio shows on vinyl for a while now and this was my latest addition. I'll be posting the cue sheets of my shows in a bit (lots to post here to share...just need the time to do it). These broadcasts are so cool because they are snapshots in time, including commercials!

Nothing like spending a Sunday afternoon "blake sleeving" the vinyl collection listening to Power Windows through Counterparts on vinyl.

What is blake sleeving? A brand or type of plastic record sleave? If so, what do you do with the original record sleeves? I love old record sleeves, even the ones that just have adds for other albums.

Thanks for posting all this! :7up: I am really learning a bunch!! :7up:

"Blake sleeving" (while poor grammar LOL :eyeroll: ) is a term used in the vinyl community to package up vinyl records in an outer sleeve that is either sealed with a resealable flap or without. The term "blake sleeve" pays homage to a guy named "Blake" who worked for a company called ClearBags. Apparently he wasn't thrilled with the outer plastic sleeves on the market at the time and decided to design a crystal clear outer sleeve of 4 mil polyurethane or polyethelene that helped to protect the vinyl from shelf wear or any contaminents from harming the outer sleeve (I hope I have the history right...if not, please share). You can get them with a resealable adhesive flap on the back (which I prefer) or open-ended. Your call.

These things are simply fantastic. Not only is my entire collection completely protected, the shine of the plastic makes the artwork/colour from the album cover "pop". Often when I order albums from MusicStack or eBay, or I attend records shows, the vendors will give me my purchase with a beat up outer sleeve...solely for protection. When I get home, I will transfer the album to the "blake" and usually just toss the old sleeve, unless its in decent shape, or its oversized to accommodate box sets.

I'm thrilled that you are picking up some great tips here. That was the reason I started this post...Rush is simply one of those truly unique bands when it comes to their releases, especially on vinyl. All I hope to do is help other collectors or fans to recognize the Rush catalog on vinyl (and my collection is nowhere near some of those out there! LOL).

The purpose of this forum was to hopefully help other Rush vinyl collectors to identify those pieces...both rare and common...that are floating out on the marketplace. There are collections out there that are quite vast and extensive (far moreso than mine and mine is well over 200 pieces!), but I've found that sometimes I need to see, or visualize the actual album/45/bootleg/78 to be able to determine wheter I want it in my collection. Over the weekend, I managed to pull out my standard releases...studio albums and live that were released by the band in an official capacity (aside from a couple that I felt NEEDED to be included...you'll know which ones when you see the photos) and took some photos (sorry for the gloss...they are all packaged in blake sleeves). I split everything up by decade: 70s, 80s, 90s/00s.

First up...the 70s! (the only item that isn't shown is my regular copy of Hemispheres, which is currently on loan to a buddy; and my gatefold copy of ATWAS hadn't arrived yet)

Clockwise from upper left: Rush (Canada), Fly By Night (Canada), Caress of Steel (non-gatefold, Canada), 2112 (Canada), ATWAS (non-gatefold, Canada), Farewell to Kings (UK), Hemispheres (Pic Disc), Hemispheres (Red Vinyl; original sealed), Farewell to Kings (Russian Pressing), Archives (black cover; Canada), Rush/Fly By Night (dual album; West Germany).

I'll post the 80s, 90s, and 00s a bit later today. If you want more photos or closer shots to anything in particular let me know.

And on to the 80s...

Clockwise from upper left: Permanent Waves (Canada), Moving Pictures (autographed by the entire band; Canada), Exit...Stage Left (Canada), Signals (USA), Grace Under Pressure (Canada), Power Windows (UK - Pic Disc), Power Windows (USA), A Show of Hands (I can't remember where this one is from; gatefold), Hold Your Fire (Canada), Presto (Venezuela), Anthology (Venezuela), Presto (Germany), Rush Through Time (Holland), Rush Through Time (Germany - Pic Disc)

AS I said in my last posting, sorry about the reflection...blame the blake sleeves. If you want more pics or closer pics of anything, let me know.

For those who have Rush vinyl, or collect it as part of an obsession (oh, wait...that's me), the biggest challenge to complete your collection comes from the albums that were released in the 90s and beyond; or from Presto onwards. The demand for vinyl in the early 90s waned considerably in lieu of the overwhelming popularity of the compact disc. Artists (and their labels) who released vinyl did so appease a dwindling number of audiophiles and true fans. Rush was no different. Several releases by the band in the 90s and beyond were never released on vinyl, such as Different Stages (wouldn't that be saweeeettt?), Rush In Rio, Time Machine, and the one that boggles everyone's mind - Test For Echo, the only studio release to never* be released on vinyl.

*Never officially...see below.

So, without further ado, here is my Rush vinyl collection from the 90s to today (clockwise from the upper left): Roll The Bones (Germany), Chronicles (Germany), Counterparts (Brazil), Test For Echo (yup...here it is. Blazened with an Anthem Atlantic label and everything, this one could more than likely be placed in the "I have no idea where this one is from" pile. It looks incredible and the sound is fantastic.), Vapor Trails (USA, sealed), Feedback (USA, sealed), Clockwork Angels (my LE Red Vinyl edition from Germany hasn't arrived yet), Moving Pictures Live (USA), Snakes and Arrows

So there you have it...the entire Rush catalog (LP-wise) on vinyl. Yes, theoretically T4E shouldn't belong in this group, but it looks so "at home". As time permits, I'll get my 45s/78s/12" singles, promo releases, picture discs, bootlegs, and radio broadcasts photographed and posted. Keep checking back.
