I have been doing yoga daily since January. I used to do it regularly in college but feel out of the habit. got back into it rehabbing a back injury.

I got say I feel than i have in years and am free of back pain entirely.

Really? P90X has a yoga routine in there and I always skip it. I am going in Wed for anther shot in my back for a herniated disc - what kind of back issues were you having?

I found the yoga too slow for me, but if it really does help, I may give it another shot. I'm actually supposed to be doing it tonight in my "recovery week"

i lifted a heavy box off a car top and think i herniated a disc in my lower back. never got a x-ray but had all the classic symptoms. i could barely walk and could not stand up straight. i took my around 3 months to get better.

the key to yoga is that while you are stretching you are focused on breathing with your diaphragm and that really is the key to yoga IMO. breathing while twisted, inverted or raising your legs really brings out your stomach muscles.

if you are inclined, certain poses are better for your back and i can mention a few to you. most beginner yoga books say what each pose is good for.

probably just as important as yoga for your back is to walk each day. i walk three miles a day and if i take day off i can feel it in my back.

My doc gave me a bunch of exercises to do to strengthen the area, like laying on my back and lifting alternate arm and leg, holding for as long as possible and switching. Repeat 5-10 times. Also, the same thing, but instead of lying down, from your hands and knees.

This really helped me for a while, along with regular exercise. The shots usually only last a year, but mine lasted 3 years due to the preventative measures I was taking.... then I hurt my knee and I stopped doing much of anything and my back flared up after quite a few months of that.

^^^ I can relate.

Prior to hurting my back i hurt my achilles/calf muscle and when i could not walk to rehab my leg it regressed.

Google up neutral spine position. good posture is key to good back health it seems.

have ever tried sitting on a balance ball when on the computer or watching TV? a bad piece of furniture can wreck my back. when i drive i use a lumbar support and supposedly your knees should be higher than your hips when driving.

hope your back feels better soon! trink39.gif

O:

That back pain part intrigued me.

I've suffered bad back pains since about freshman year (h.s.) and for a while was taking something to help it, but my back got a little stronger and then the melloxicam wasn't doing much of anything.

But I know they have yoga classes where I'm going in a few weeks. I just might have to scrape up the twenty-thirty bucks and take it. Sounds like it'd be worth it to go, and I've heard yoga is good for stress management too.

Yoga is not metal.

Thread revival time! I'm going to try a yoga class tomorrow (they have a first-timers special, as many classes as you want in 10 consecutive days for 20 bucks... worth it to try now). Questions- how many of you guys here do this? Also, it looks like there's no distinction between a men's class or women's class, so what can I expect? Is it weird?

It was really hard to keep up in that class, too. But I figure if in the next 9 days I can go enough (while it's affordable) to get the poses right, then I can do them on my own. Felt pretty damn good, and I'm a little sore between the shoulders and lower back. Great stuff, though.

I'm signing up for May classes tomorrow. I can't wait I love yoga!

Matt, maybe it was the type of yoga class that was too much for you. You should try a beginners class or hatha because it moves a lot slower and the stretches are deep and meant to calm you. Vinyasa or a flow class may move too quickly for you as a beginner.

Don't give up and try a different type of yoga.

Namaste :)

Embarrassingly enough, it was a beginner class haha. I'm gonna get my money's worth out of these classes, but then may try something else.

I couldn't do anything like yoga - I'd probably end up inside out, head stuck up where the :sundog: Don't shine, and get cramp... and no-one would hear my shout for help because of where aforementioned head would be.
