Rod in Toronto
I´ve seen a few mentions of King Diamond and Mercyful Fate´s name in a few threads here, but not an "official" thread. My first contact with either of them was back in the late 80´s when I read about both in a magazine. I went to the record store and was too scared to buy Don´t Break The Oath - that cover still scares the sh*t out of me until today - and then I settled for Abigail. It blew my mind from the very first listen! From then on I bought every King Diamond record I could find until The Eye, when I though he was repeating himself too much. Since then it has been hit or miss, but House of God, Puppet Master and Abigail Part II are great. His singing style is really tacky, but I don´t care, it´s still awesome! I hope he´s recovering well from his heart surgery, as I am yet to see him live.
J2112YYZ
He's recovering just fine from his heart surgery. From last summer's Sweeden rock fest which he headlined: He was a guest on the VH1 Classic's That Metal Show last year and he said his bypass surgery has caused him to breathe differently and that he he is singing better than he has in a long time because of it. A new album and tour should happen this year. He's been one of my favorites for many years. I love his voice, actually I love all the voices he does. It really fits well with the subject matters he sings about. My older brother's friend was a huge fan of his and I first learned who King Diamond was in the early 90s. It wasn't until a few years later that I became a fan though. I bought a Mercyful Fate/King Diamond compilation album called A Dangerous Meeting which is just a best of for both bands, but what an introduction to the music it was for me. I went out and collected everything Fate and Diamond after that. I've always had a dark side to me so the themes that King writes about have always kept me interested. It did seem King wore himself a little thin in the 90s by trying to do both his band and Mercyful Fate. There was some good stuff but there was also times where you could tell he was running out of ideas as to what to write between the two. The first two Mercyful Fate albums will always be my favorites from them. In The Shadows, Dead Again and Time are pretty good. I never cared much for Into The Unknown or 9. I like his solo material a lot more. Fatal Portrait, Abigail, Them, Conspiracy, The Graveyard, Voodoo (which I think is very underrated) and The Puppet Master are my favorites. I never thought he would be able to come out with anything that could rival those first four albums but he really out did himself with The Puppet Master. That shit needs to be made into a movie. After 17 years of being a fan, his voice still gives me chills and some of the songs he's written still scare me. But I will never stop listening to him, he's so unique in both his writing and vocal style. There isn't anyone else in the music world like King Diamond. Stormtron
I love the King and he's #1 on my list of concerts I want to see. When I was a kid and saw a picture of this dude for the first time, I knew I was all about it. I consider Black Horsemen to pretty much be the finest metal song ever recorded. Stormtron
Also, I have a pair of shoes with the Abigail artwork on the side. :laughing yellow guy: Edit: And when my kid was in kindergarten, she had to do a little project with a shoe box and guess which one she used. The whole top of the box is the Abigail cover. Edited March 10, 2013 by Storm Shadow
Rod in Toronto
All hail the fukking KING! I was kinda hoping you´d show up in this topic, mate! Didn´t you have a picture of the King in your avatar until recently? I just read a new interview he did for a Brazilian mag called Roadie Crew, and his new album will have a story that goes on at a hospital - he thought about it as he was recovering from his surgery. Sounds like an awesome album is in the works! All Hail the King!!! :haz: :haz:

H. P. L.
It was the late 80s and I was into metal with, like, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, the lot, and this friend says: I'm gonna lend you a nice one, and the next day he comes with Don't Break the Oath. I was scared s*itless. My very first truly satanic record. I was afraid to play it at night. The music is magnificent though. The double attack of A Dangerous Meeting might be my favourite metal intro EVER.Still, I was never completely sold on King's voice. Love him, respect him, but never my first choice.

It fits the atmosphere of the music so well. Especially, if it's a cold night with heavy rain and lots of wind :haz: Edited March 12, 2013 by J2112YYZ

I remember seeing the video for The Family Ghost and being scared shitless of his look and that voice! But once "Them" came out I was hooked. I've always felt that King's stories are better than most of the crap that's considered horror films today and I'm still waiting for someone to make a movie from one of the albums. Why this hasn't happened is beyond me. It would be awesome! I rank King up there with Halford and Dickinson when it comes to the best vocalist in metal. I know many people hate his voice, but there's no denying the man can sing! Seems like a nice down to Earth guy too, patiently awaiting a tour. Steevo
Still, I was never completely sold on King's voice. Love him, respect him, but never my first choice. I couldn't take that voice whatsoever first time round in the 80s but now it's perfect for what he represents. No sitting on the fence with King :haz:

J2112YYZ
Yeah that's a really good set. When he tours later this year I wouldn't mind if this was the set with two or three new songs added in. He would probably take something like Shapes Of Black and Up From The Grave out and put some new songs in their place. I love that my favorite song from him, At The Graves was played. I know it was a song he didn't do for a long time and if I get to see him live I will completely lose my mind if he plays it.
