And when were you there, Lucas? I went in 1995 and '99, and saw quite a difference between the two times.

I assumed you've been to China at least once with Japan possibly tossed in there somewhere. I wonder if both of those countries would be what you expect. For me, they were...and they weren't. But the interesting aspects of both rose after the experiences.

Most people that visit Japan go to Tokyo and/or Kyoto. And they should! If you go to the latter, let me know as Osaka is a mere 30 minute train ride away. After we get some beers I could point you in the direction of those hentai spots you've always wanted to visit! ;)

I can definitely imagine you as a New York cabbie. Cigar in mouth, five o'clock shadow and all and asking, "Ok Mac, where to?"

I'm sure you're known on a first name basis at all the best

SERIOUSLY

The only time I've been out of the USA is to the Czech Rep . . . . Growing up, we had all kinds or artwork and books on history, esp of China - the Terra Cotta Soldiers and Great Wall were always fascinating ..

And seeing Japan would be amazing for me . . . or, I should say WILL be amazing, as I will do it when the time is right

In '95 the Czech Republic hadn't had much experience with tourists. Not many people spoke English, few menus were in English, and things were just rough around the edges (the easiest way to describe the leftover communist feeling - lack of freedom, prosperity, and hope). Four years later and everything had changed. Tourism was commonplace, everything was in English, tourists were everywhere (more so than before), and capitalism was well entrenched. It has much less of an Eastern European feel to it.

3 things I´ve learned this year:

That last year, I really thought I had a handle on the extent of my vast lack of knowledge.
