JohnnyBlaze
Here's the companion thread to the Big Four of Thrash Metal thread. I didn't arbitrarily choose AIC, Nirvana, PJ, and Soundgarden out of my own personal like for them. They've been listed in mags and fan sites as THE Big Four of Grunge many times. Hell, I don't even like the term "grunge" but, what can you do? Anyway, pick one. Discuss if you wish.
Blue J
Have to go with Alice in Chains. Dirt is a masterpiece of the genre- even though it contains more Sabbath-type metal riffery than anything else, to my ears.

JohnnyBlaze
I like stuff from all of those bands. But Alice in Chains has more albums that I like than the others. And I agree with Blue J's thoughts on Dirt, a masterpiece.

Fordgalaxy
Soundgarden because Chris Cornell sings better than Vedder and all their members are still alive, which is important for continuity.

Digital Dad
My first vote was Soundgarden. In 1990 fhat was definitely my choice. Badmotorfinger is an wra album that still holds up today. I changed it to PJ. Quite honestly I'm not as much a fan of their Grunge era but what rhey have done since No Code. Im more a fan of Bleach than of Nevermind. AIC was wonderful. Since Layne died I have nothing to do with them anymore. The new guy adds nothing. They may as well be a trio. However I am looking forward to the side project he worked on with Brent Hinds.

Amelodic means without melody. Or being deliberatley non melodic. Like the musical sounds made whilst one is tuning their instruments. It IS a word but its being misused here.
rocket ignites
Alice in Chains by far. I even like their new stuff. I lost track of Pearl Jam years ago, but I was fully on board in their early years.

What I was implying (and clearly doing badly) was that "amelodic" is an obscure word that (to me) is being forced into this exchange.

J2112YYZ
The only grunge band I see on the list is Nirvana. Pearl Jam is a rock band. AIC and Soundgarden are metal. For the purpose of this thread, AIC gets my vote.

However, every time I mention there being too many music genres and the uselessness of them all, nobody ever comments...because the truth is is that TRF loves all the genres and sub-genres and categories and this and that. Having said that, what exactly is "grunge" then to you?
Rod in Toronto
PJ is the best of the bunch, by a looooooong shot. They've been around the longest, and aside from the drummer, have kept the same lineup. All others have good moments and songs, but PJ are the most consistent. They have their share of amelodic songs, but each album has a cool melodic track for those who miss them. And Eddie Vedder is an absolute monster on the stage. Not to mention that each night they play, the setlist is completely different - 100% unique!

I honestly don't know what other bands fall into the grunge category. Nirvana was their own entity when it came to that particular sound.
