187: The Final Cut (Eel Yddeg)

Very under-rated album. Your Possible Pasts, The Gunners Dream, and others are great songs!

One could surely make the argument that this album isnt Prog either.

I'd say it is. Sounds similar to The Wall, which is prog.

The Wall is about as prog as Sgt. Peppers, but bloated to two discs.

How isn't the Wall prog?

he is saying it is, like Sgt. Peppers

But how is Sgt. Peppers even remotely prog? It has none of the characteristics. No long songs, no complexity, normal verse-chorus verse structures and simple, poppy melodies, no jazz fusion or classical influences, no emphasis on keyboards...

And as for those other albums, they don't have any prog characteristics either.

The Final Cut, on the other hand, does. There are no simple, poppy songs (except Not Now John) lots of jazzy saxophone parts, and complexity abounds.

A lot of what you say is characteristic of prog is through out Sgt. Pepper's. You might be giving the album a biased judgement.

It's not, though. No long songs (Longest is 5 minutes) all the songs are simple, poppy ones (Except Within You Without You, but that's more Indian music inspired) no jazz fusion elements, no keyboards.

Let's put it this way. Listen to "With a Little Help From My Friends" or "When I'm Sixty Four", and then listen to "Echoes" or "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and try to say they're in the same genre.

There's a little bit of cherry picking with your examples. Anyway, the point I'm making is that Sgt. Pepper's contains a lot of characteristics and elements of what eventually became progressive rock. The influence is undeniable. Musicians like Robert Fripp, Jon Anderson, Greg Lake, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Peter Gabriel (the list goes on). They all claim the Beatles, especially Sgt. Pepper's, had a major impact on how the created music. Is Sgt. Pepper's prog? Nah. But it's certainly a seed for the genre and a major influence. I always scratch my head on what actually defines "progressive rock". And personally, I'll take a well constructed and catchy pop song over most of the meandering, jazzy, improvisational songs considered prog.

198) Misplaced Childhood - Marillion (willowroolz)

In 1985 I was wearing a white feather whilst dancing in stilletoes in the snow. Fact.

Excellent! I was about to list this and would put it in my top 3 prog albums of the 80's.

Just because a song isn't long or doesn't have keyboards doesn't mean it isnt prog Rock (Caress of Steel has no keyboards and is prog Rock)

I wasn't actually planning to use this pick for Images and Words, but when I realized it was (shockingly) not already on the list, I had to call an audible. This was the album that put Dream Theater on the map, and their first with James LaBrie, who was really in his vocal prime at this point. The interplay between intense vocals, shredding guitar, incredible drumwork, and the fun technical keyboarding of Kevin Moore, makes Images and Words a seminal album for the prog-metal movement of the 90s. I consider this album Dream Theater's best, and when ANY song from the album is played, I stop to sing along.

With just over 50 albums to go, we're faced with putting on albums on the fringe of prog, or, putting on universally accepted prog albums that we're not crazy about ..

.

Bullocks

200) Happy the Man "Happy the Man"

1977 Arista recording artist HtM among the best of US 70's , almost became Peter Gabriels back up band. Falls somewhere between symphonic and slight Canterbury feel.

One can look at Prog rock as simply pushing rock music beyond its basic roots of blues, R&B, folk and country music. Exploring Jazz and classical music concepts fall into that box. Also, applying a conceptual theme throughout an album or song. Tell a story or explore improvisation or experimental recording techniques.

Tell me, in 1980 what album was more progressive than Talking Heads' Remain in Light? Or Wire's 154? Is Radiohead a prog rock band?

The Moody Blues are considered prog rock by some people. If they are prog rock how is "A Day in the Life" not?

Personally, I don't really think of SPLHCB as "progressive" - but there is a cinematic element to it that I often associate with prog. And there is experimentation - very evident on a song like "A Day in the Life". Not to remove any credibility from this opinion, there's an accurate description on wikipedia that might qualify this work as "prog"

Sgt. Pepper is regarded by musicologists as an early concept album that advanced the use of extended form in popular music while continuing the artistic maturation seen on the Beatles' preceding releases. It has been described as one of the first art rock LPs, aiding the development of progressive rock, and credited with marking the beginning of the Album Era. An important work of British psychedelia, the album incorporates a range of stylistic influences, including vaudeville, circus, music hall, avant-garde, and Western and Indian classical music.

199) Images and Words - Dream Theater (KenJennings)

http://www.globalplaza.hu/img/up/medium_1052765_image_29638.jpg

I wasn't actually planning to use this pick for Images and Words, but when I realized it was (shockingly) not already on the list, I had to call an audible. This was the album that put Dream Theater on the map, and their first with James LaBrie, who was really in his vocal prime at this point. The interplay between intense vocals, shredding guitar, incredible drumwork, and the fun technical keyboarding of Kevin Moore, makes Images and Words a seminal album for the prog-metal movement of the 90s. I consider this album Dream Theater's best, and when ANY song from the album is played, I stop to sing along.

Great! Another one I was just about to post - absolutely belongs on the list. When this disc first hit in 92, I was in NY and happened to see DT play live in a small venue. They blew my head off - I felt like I had discovered a "new Rush" - the musicality of Yes, combined with a deep metal influence - everyone in the band could shred. (too bad for the over-compressed production and horrific snare drum sound! I know Portnoy never liked it - I got to ask him about it years later.)

That's the spirit !

And you are absolutely right

Perhaps partially inspired by his buds in The Tea Party, Ian composed a set of Eastern-flavored tunes for this particular trip amongst the trees. Menacing guitar riffs and mysterious flute lines lend the album a foreboding feel such that it may as well have been called Songs from the Less Welcoming Wood. :)

203) dredg - Catch Without Arms

http://www.progarchives.com/progressive_rock_discography_covers/1814/cover_354910482005.jpg

Crossing the 200 mark, I'm still shocked to see no Muse, Spock's Beard or Flying Colors on the list... but I need to get this one off my chest. dredg is one of the most underrepresented bands in Prog, as they carefully skirt the boundary between Prog, Art Rock and Post Rock. They are experts of painting pictures with sound, creating album length concept pieces, and telling high concept stories in their music. They have an inventive sound, often relying on instruments like the steel guitar to take the place of more traditional keyboards. Catch Without Arms is probably not their most progressive album, but it is the album that drew my attention to this band, and I believe it is their best musical work. A fantastic interpretative contribution to the wide ranging prog soundscape.

Anyway:

Just because a song isn't long or doesn't have keyboards doesn't mean it isnt prog Rock (Caress of Steel has no keyboards and is prog Rock)

Then why is it prog rock?

One can look at Prog rock as simply pushing rock music beyond its basic roots of blues, R&B, folk and country music. Exploring Jazz and classical music concepts fall into that box. Also, applying a conceptual theme throughout an album or song. Tell a story or explore improvisation or experimental recording techniques.

Tell me, in 1980 what album was more progressive than Talking Heads' Remain in Light? Or Wire's 154? Is Radiohead a prog rock band?

The Moody Blues are considered prog rock by some people. If they are prog rock how is "A Day in the Life" not?

But there is no concept in Sgt Peppers. The title track and the reprise are the only ones connected.

And telling a story through one song? That would mean most songs would be prog!

Talking Heads aren't prog, Radiohead aren't prog, Moody Blues aren't prog.

And about the cherrypicking, If you seriously can't tell the difference between A Day In A Life and Karn Evil 9, I don't know what to tell you.

I mean, who's going to be put on this list next? Bob Dylan? Johnny Cash? Lady Gaga?
