Ok, off the top of the head, and I'm limiting it to one song per band / artist:

- Detroit Rock City - KISS

- Sonic Reducer - Dead Boys

- And You And I - YES

- Lay Down And Die - UK Subs

- Common People - Pulp

- Five Years - David Bowie

- Cygnus X1 - RUSH

- S A T U R D A Y Night - Bay City Rollers

- Don't Stop Me Now - Queen

- Dancing Queen - ABBA

edit:

.. and I'd adding Surrender from Cheap Trick ... get rid of one of the lame punk songs if need be

If I'm alone I rarely play it without repeating it at least one more time. It's a great rock song to sing along with that has a powerful movie tie in from my formative years.

I agree with ABBA. If Fleetwood Mac or Boston count as rock, then so does ABBA (at times).

Dancing Queen is equally as thrilling, if not more so, than Boston's More Than A Feeling or Toto's Hold The Line.

Ten songs I think "represent" what "Rock" music is;

"Maybellene"- Chuck Berry

"Long Tall Sally" - The Beatles

"All Day and All of the Night' - The Kinks

"Manic Depression" - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

"Jumpin' Jack Flash" - The Rolling Stones

"21st Century Schizoid Man" - King Crimson

"Won't Get Fooled Again" - The Who

"Blitzkrieg Bop" - Ramones

"Janie Jones" - The Clash

"Love WIll Tear Us Apart" - Joy Division

I could make lists all night long. Ten songs simply is not fair.

"Like a Rolling Stone" - Bob Dylan. I am ashamed I did not think of it right off the bat...

Agreed!

I did want to make a stab at a legit "all time great" rock list.

Like you or ReGor would do amazingly well...

But I just couldn't round it down to 10.

So I just kept it personal.

Oooh damn. I didnt include a Kinks or Beatles song in my list. Or two of the most perfectly composed songs of the 80's, Owner and Africa.

- Dancing Queen - ABBA

Dancing Queen...you got a set a knads on you man. Bold choice.

Speaking of knads, you're nuts. I wouldn't put it on my top 10 list, but that's a pretty enjoyable song with all kinds of nostalgic ramifications...which Lucas often seems to be steered by

Yeah, I wouldn't put it in my top 100 or probably 200 or 300 but I still think it's enjoyable.

I'd rather hear that then some shit by Ratt for example.
