The Rush Forum's Top 100 Metal Albums

I loved the 500 albums topic we made last year and I figured why not apply it to hard rock and heavy metal? Stealing the idea from ReRushed who stole it from another forum:

1) One album per post

2) A TRF member can only post an album every 10 picks (or every 5 if it grows stagnant)

3) Please cut and paste as you post

4) Please give a brief reason beneath your pick as to why you're choosing that particular album. That way it'll be a little more than just a huge list thread.

1. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

Might as well get some of the obvious choices out of the way. Why not begin the list with one of the very first metal albums. You could probably argue it's just hard rock now, but it is still a fantastic record

2) Mastodon- Blood Mountain

It is crazy and twisted and one of my favourite prog metal albums of all time.

2. Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast

It's far from my favorite Maiden album (everything that followed it up to Seventh Son is better IMO, as well as about half the 21st century stuff) but this album is so important in the history of heavy metal.

Plenty of headbangers like 22 Acacia Avenue, the title track, or Invaders. Emotive metal ballad in Children Of The Damned, and one of the greatest metal masterpieces ever crafted in Hallowed By Thy Name.

4. Def Leppard - Pyromania

Argue whether you think it's a metal album. I think it is. The pinnacle of Lep's career with songs like Photograph or Rock of Ages, as well as some real treats like Die Hard The Hunter.

3. Mastodon - Blood Mountain

4. Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind

5. Def Leppard - Pyromania

6. Michael Schenker Group - The Michael Schenker Group

A solid debut for the ex-UFO guitarist. Top notch riff driven guitar. And a kick ass instrumental - "Into the Arena".

7. Megadeth - Rust In Peace

The pinnacle of thrash metal for me. Some of the most insane, yet technically proficient guitar work ever recorded. Dave Mustaine's angry snarl is my favorite pissed off singing style in metal.

Metallica - Ride The Lightning

This or Master of Puppets, though I argue Ride The Lightning because it covers a wider variety of styles, including the one that led to Puppets.

Creeping Death, Fade To Black, the title track, For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Cliff Burton shredding the bass!

I never thought of it as a full on metal album. There are some songs that certainly can be considered that like Stagefright, Too Late For Love and Die Hard The Hunter. I always thought of it as a hard rock album though.

9. Lacuna Coil- Comalies

Because metal can be beautiful and yearning as well as a call to arms.

It's friday night so things might move a little slow. I don't know for sure, but i've been told this is a popular night of the week for people to go out and do stuff.

My turn again

1. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (Union 5-3992)

2. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast (BowlCity)

3. Mastodon - Blood Mountain (Segue Myles

4. Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind (ReGorLaTroy)

5. Def Leppard - Pyromania (BowlCity)

6. Michael Schenker Group - The Michael Schenker Group (ReRushed)

7. Megadeth - Rust In Peace (J2112YYZ)

8. Quiet Riot - Metal Health --- Metal riffness (custom55)

9. Metallica - Ride The Lightning (BowlCity)

10. Lacuna Coil- Comalies (Segye Myles)

11. Judas Priest - Painkiller (djflex)

12. Opeth - Blackwater Park (Union 5-3992)

Truly one of the best progressive metal albums made, I'd put it above almost everything Dream Theater has made. Most of the album are all huge concert hits for Opeth, it's like their Moving PIctures. Plus it features the Leper Affinity which I find one of the most evil sounding songs, it's the album that opened the door for me to start listening to music this heavy.

NO HATE GUYS!

The worst of Opeth tops the best of Dream Theater.

Sorry but not sorry.

This album 100% deserves more recognition.
