Judging an Album by its Cover

I don't think I've ever bought an album just for the cover art, I was cheap and did research on it before I bought it to ensure that I would be spending money on something I enjoyed. But having said that, I have a tendency to listen to albums with covers I find most interesting

"Research" was extremely limited 30-40 years ago. The only research possible would've been to go over to your buddy's place and listen to his albums before buying a particular album yourself.

I liked comic books and Conan (the Cimmerian, not the goofy looking late night guy) books so Molly Hatchet and Kiss album covers were the best back in the 70s and early 80s...

That's funny buddy. I was at the other end of the music buying spectrum. It was a fuckking "FREE FOR ALL" to quote Ted Nugent. I mean shit, When I saw those first three Nugent album covers I HAD TO BUY THEM!!

I'm not a "Cheap Trick" Union. I spent the "Big Money" on music. Fuckk it. "We are only immortal for a limited time." What a cliche but it's true. I am blessed with a vast musical knowledge that is very electric and it lies "Under The Milky Way."

Signed,

THE METAL CHURCH

LOL!

Holy Diver Buddy! HELL YES!

I had to take care of a neighbor's house back in 1982 for a week.

The dude had a huge vinyl collection.

I spent hours and hours and hours at his house playing his records.

I remember actually falling in love with Alan Parsons Project and Blue Oyster Cult that year. When I met Alan Parsons a few years ago I told him that it was the "Eye In The Sky" record I listened to at a neighbor's house and fell in love. Alan was impressed that I remember the exact year the album came out.

I am...

"OLD AND WISE"

LOL!

That song will be played at my funeral.

Serious.

Two amazing albums. So it's true. I bought "Flirting With Disaster" who I was a teen just because of the cover.

Some say that Molly Hatchet were like a Country Rock Rush.

I love Molly.

I'm not "Too Fast For Love." I take it "Slow And Easy."

"Slide It in" yet another awesome cover.

You kidding me?

Album art is essential to the audio experience.

SEX SELLS!!! ALBUM ART IS SEX FOR THE EYES! The music is SEX FOR THE EARS!

It all transcends to the soul which makes you want to fuckking explode into a YYZillion pieces of enigmatic ecstasy!

What do ya think ? ... Buy it, or leave it in the bin ??

Kinda has that kitchy, floral appeal to it. There's like a 50/50 chance I'd bin it! Probably much higher if I never have the opportunity to listen to it before buying.

You know album art that absolutely sucks is mid-90's alt rock and grunge covers. Mind you, I enjoy grunge, but I wouldn't like seeing this on my shelves!

Nowadays I think artists actually care about presentation again, which makes me happy. They're quirky, artsy, a little more gentle on the covers; especially indie rock.

And Kanye gets a lot of shit but I love the work he's done on his image.

I can't recall if I have ever bought an album just because of its cover, but I think a great cover helps building a great album reputation.

Ready to buy (again) any ABBA album reprinted with different cover showing Agnetha in black leather!

Now that's HOT! ABBA RULES!! Yet another group that has it all. I love "The Visitors" album cover because it's sad. Both couples were going through a divorce at the same time.

Reminds me of me and my ex brother in law.

Back in the day (read: 25-35 years ago) I used to spend a lot of time in record stores. Although I can't remember specific albums, I'm sure that there have been at least a few times when I bought an album based on the cover, although that would have been because it looked like something I would listen to.

I am another person who mourns the loss of the 12x12 artwork and the liner notes that were large enough so you could actually read them. Oh, and the little messages that you sometimes found scratched into the center "ring" of the vinyl.

Hahah, in 1979 Throbbing Gristle released "20 Jazz Funk Greats" with this cover:

Imagine the horror of the people who bought it based on that cover when they brought it home to find they now owned an album by the pioneers in industrial noise:

My love of Rush can be traced back to my big brother seeing 'All the World's a Stage' in a record store in the late 70's.. he had no clue who Rush was but bought it only because it had a drum kit on the front. I found Rush through listening to his records whenever he was out lol

Molly Hatchet are from my hometown so their stuff was played all the time in those days. Same goes for Skynerd & 38 Special, 2 other Southern fried rock bands from my hometown. I never was the greatest fan of any of those bands (they all had their moments of goodness though) but Hatchet had the best looking album covers by far.

This wasn't the greatest album cover (though not bad) but inside there was that cool little board game...a "Life" board game of sorts for rock stars. Used to play that quite a bit while listening to that kick ass album!
