"Realize your youth while you have it. Don’t squander the gold of your days, listening to the tedious, trying to improve the hopeless failure, or giving away your life to the ignorant, the common, and the vulgar. These are the sickly aims, the false ideals, of our age. Live! Live the wonderful life that is in you! Let nothing be lost upon you. Be always searching for new sensations. Be afraid of nothing."

----- Oscar Wilde

I believe Iron Maiden said this more succinctly in "Wasted Years."

Iron Maiden

Wasted Years

From the coast of gold, across the seven seas

I'm travellin' on, far and wide

But now it seems, I'm just a stranger to myself

And all the things I sometimes do, it isn't me but

someone else

I close my eyes, and think of home

Another city goes by in the night

Ain't it funny how it is, you never miss it 'til it's

gone away

And my heart is lying there and will be 'til my

dying day

[Chorus:]

So understand

Don't waste your time always searching for

those wasted years

Face up... make your stand

And realise you're living in the golden years

Too much time on my hands, I got you on my mind

Can't ease this pain, so easily

When you can't find the words to say it's hard to

make it through another day

And it makes me wanna cry and throw my

hands up to the sky

The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool. - Shakespeare, As You Like It, Act V Scene I

If you have always believed that everyone should play by the same rules and be judged by the same standards, that would have gotten you labeled a radical 60 years ago, a liberal 30 years ago and a racist today.

Helping those who have been struck by unforeseeable misfortunes is fundamentally different from making dependency a way of life.

Although the big word on the left is 'compassion,' the big agenda on the left is dependency.

"I stand at the seashore, alone, and start to think.

There are the rushing waves

mountains of molecules

each stupidly minding its own business

trillions apart

yet forming white surf in unison.

Ages on ages before any eyes could see

year after year

thunderously pounding the shore as now.

For whom, for what?

On a dead planet

with no life to entertain.

Never at rest

tortured by energy

wasted prodigiously by the sun

poured into space.

A mite makes the sea roar.

Deep in the sea

all molecules repeat

the patterns of one another

till complex new ones are formed.

They make others like themselves

and a new dance starts.

Growing in size and complexity

living things

masses of atoms

DNA, protein

dancing a pattern ever more intricate.

Out of the cradle

onto dry land

here it is

standing:

atoms with consciousness;

matter with curiosity.

Stands at the sea,

wonders at wondering: I

a universe of atoms

an atom in the universe."

—Richard P. Feynman.

Are you sure that isn't Doctor Manhattan? ;)

From the song 'Devil' by n.m.a.

And all you have to do is learn to turn the other way

As people around you suffer, well, it’s easy, people suffer every day

And then you find you’re in a trap of your own making, it holds you in its clutch

Because once you’ve touched the poison, you poison everything you touch

Well its not a quotation in the sense intended by the O.P. I think, but an epitaph. I love this so much I thought I'd put it here. Makes me chuckle.

This is on Spike Milligan's gravestone;

'I told you I was ill'

...The important thing is: if you fail once, or if your luck is bad this time, the dream is still there. A dream is only over if you give it up-or if it comes true(Neil Ellwood Peart).

Those who know what's best for us must rise and save us from ourselves.(Neil Ellwood Peart)

Stamina is the force that drives the drumming; it's not really a sprint.(Neil Ellwood Peart)

I take these quotes to heart.
