Not sure if I've ever seen Geddy with that expression before. (And it almost looks like one of Alex's poses at the at beginning of Tom Sawyer.)

Lucas
DOL, this is going to sound prehistoric, but, is this artwork done with software or a certain program, or do you do these on paper and scan them in ?? For the longest time, I was in the dark ages as far as computers ( I still kinda am ), but I found a free program online that is supposedly similar to Photoshop, and that's how all the Neil pics started .. And that I have Lorraine and LIX to blame for that because they set me up with that great Santa hat avatar of my 2nd grade photo - when they did that for me, I was like "OK, THIS COULD BE FUN" so I found a simple photo adjusting program Edited April 24, 2016 by Lucas

And that I have Lorraine and LIX to blame for that because they set me up with that great Santa hat avatar of my 2nd grade photo - when they did that for me, I was like "OK, THIS COULD BE FUN" so I found a simple photo adjusting program Hehe it's not prehistoric at all. To answer the question it depends. I still do a lot of sketching freehand on paper and I own a scanner, which I use. If a sketch turns out particularly inspiring and not just a typical proportion or perspective exercise or whatever then I take it and do lines over it. However, other than things that cannot be mistaken for digital art, everything I put in this thread is drawn digitally using a tablet and stylus in Photoshop. Using a mouse is impossible. I use the Wacom Intuos Medium as a tablet but to be honest any smaller tablet will do. The important part is having something pressure-sensitive that mimics how one would draw naturally. I'm not too good at using Photoshop for things that are not related to lining and painting; and I honestly can't say I've used any program other than Photoshop to compare; my brother's university allowed him to have PS CS5 for free, and so the program ended up in my use when I was still taking baby steps into the digital art world.

The Analog Grownup
DOL, your sketches are amazing. Keep practicing because it is an ability that can be lost - I'm living proof of that, even though my best was nowhere near your level. Have you thought about trying oil painting some of your work? I'd be curious to see how that would turn out. Oh, and lastly, do you have any suggestions for tutorials on Youtube to get an old rusty drawing hand going again? It's too expensive. I don't know about specific tutorials but there are some artists that do their own tutorials. I watch Kienan Lafferty a lot and he has a drawing faces tutorial he's posted recently. Cubebrush is good too.
