One mystery that has always raged in the Rush bootleg community is with the Seattle 1976 show.
The show has been bootlegged under the names
Anthem of Seattle
Battle in Seattle
By-Tor's Battle
Seattle Supersonic
One, Two, Buckle My Shoe
2112 Days
Paramount Eve
Seattle Nights
The mystery revolves around the date of the show. Was it recorded on March 28, 1976, on the 2112 Tour, or on October 25, 1976, on the All The World's A Stage Tour?
The venue is the main thing agreed on, the Paramount Theater in Seattle.
However, there are a lot of holes in the theory.
The tour dates on the official website list a show on March 28, 1976, at the Paramount Theater, but it is the Paramount Theater in Portland, not the Paramount Theater in Seattle.
To make things even more confusing, Rush did not perform any concerts on October 25, 1976! However, it does list a date at the Paramount Theater in Seattle on the 28th.
So it's definitive that the concert was not recorded on the 25th, as no shows were on that date. The two candidates now seem to be March 28 and October 28.
So what tour was it recorded on?
I lean towards the 2112 tour.
This show was a headlining gig, as Styx, the original headliner, cancelled their set, allowing Rush to perform a full show.
The set for this concert consisted of
Bastille Day
Anthem
Lakeside Park
2112
Fly By Night
In The Mood
Something For Nothing
In The End
By-Tor and the Snow Dog
Working Man
Finding My Way
Drum Solo
and Best I Can.
This set is exactly the same as the other 2112 tour gig (Tuning Man, 5/30/1976, another headlining gig) except that the encore is different (What You're Doing instead of Best I Can) and In The End and By-Tor switch places.
The headlining set lists for the All The World's A Stage tour, on the other hand, were very different.
The headlining set list for the 1976 All The World's A Stage tour gigs consisted of
Bastille Day
Anthem
Lakeside Park
2112
The Twilight Zone
Something For Nothing
Best I Can
By-Tor and the Snow Dog
The Necromancer
In The End
Working Man
Finding My Way
Drum Solo
Fly By Night
In The Mood
This set list is very different. The Twilight Zone and the Necromancer, which were nowhere to be found on the 2112 gigs, are in, Fly By Night and In The Mood are encores, and other songs have their orders swapped.
So this solves the mystery that the show was recorded on the 2112 tour, in Portland Oregon's Paramount Theater, on March 28, 1976.
I hope that this clears up everything about the recording.

I'm not disagreeing with you and you may be right but just wanted to say that the 5 versions of this show that I have all have the Oct 25th date. I am aware of the debate over the dates but personally I just enter them on my bootlist with the documented date to avoid confusion.

Yep, this is my vote, too. I'm sure it's October 25th.

I believe we have a poster on TRF who attended that show. Several months back, maybe a year ago, he was surprised to find out that a recording of it existed (and its a fairly well known one, at that). I offered to send a copy to him, but I never got a reply,

kam- five versions of the same gig? :eh:

I think I have more than six versions of this if you count cassettes.

But yeah, I was under the impression that it's the March 28, 1976 date for nearly 20 years now.  At least one of my cassette versions has the October date which the early CDs likely referenced without a fact check.  Someone may have transcribed the date wrong originally or made an honest mistake and it propagated from there.

That happens sometimes.   You still get dates for the Grace Under Pressure Tour bootleg being in 1986 because that's when it was originally simulcast on radio and MTV (I taped this from radio either in March, April or May of 1986) even though the show was recorded on Sept. 20/21 1984.

I also lean towards the March 28 date but like I stated above I keep it listed with the October date simply because that's the way it usually circulates. As anyone can and has probably read on the DRE the following comment tends to support that...

Jim Burleigh

Regarding the 1976, Seattle shows. I was at the October 25, 1976 show at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, WA. I will never forget that show as long as I live. You see it was the second time I had seen Rush live; the first time was an accident. A friend asked me to accompany him to the March 27, 1976 show at Gonzaga University in Spokane to see Styx. Neither of us knew that Rush existed prior to that fateful spring evening. The shows that are on the Seattle Supersonic and By-Tor's Battle CD's are identical. I was able to play them simultaneously, and they are absolutely the same right down to the little guitar chord ?chops? that Alex does while Geddy is introducing songs. The set is precisely the same as the Spokane show (with the exception of ?The Jam?) and I am convinced that this is the March show. The instrumental jam DID NOT happen at the October 25, 1976 show, I assure you of that without reservation. Additionally, at the October show, Geddy introduces "In The End" by saying "We'd like to mellow out for a few minutes, if you will allow us..." and the crowd expresses it's displeasure at that statement very loudly. Never the less, Geddy is brought a stool from off-stage and he sits to play the first section of the song, then stands for the second part. I have a photographic memory and I also made a list of the songs that they did at the October show, because I was still becoming familiar with their first three albums (I bought 2112 on the Sunday night after I returned to Seattle from Spokane, in fact there was a poster in the window of the record store ? Tower Records on 5th Ave. N. and Mercer St. ? advertising the Rush show that very evening, the 28th of March) and I found my little notebook with that list in it while going through some boxes stored in my parents basement. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is, in fact, the March 1976 show on both of these CD?s.    (2002-03-24)

IIRC there was a Japanese collector who did some fairly in-depth analysis to attempt to answer this question.

Reading the white letters on the black background makes my eyes hurt.

I read the whole thing, and I'm still seeing black lines everywhere, a couple minutes later.

I used to be, but not anymore. I just go by the date of a show, and if I already have a performance, I don't need to get two or three or four or five of the same one, hahaha...but to each his own.

I will check out your whole list, though.

I just went and found my disc, and according to the information that kam posted, then what I have is, in fact the March gig. I've had it for years, and I never knew!

It has something labeled 'Alex and Neil Jam' just prior to In the End.

Let me know if you still want it, troutman.

So this solves the mystery that the show was recorded on the 2112 tour, in Portland Oregon's Paramount Theater, on March 28, 1976.
I hope that this clears up everything about the recording.

This mystery was solved a while back.  This recording is from March 26, 1976 in Seattle.  Ged refers to Seattle after Bastille Day.  Check out the Power Windows site for more details.

Uh, no.....conventional wisdom in trading circles still places this show in Oct 1976.

Oh.....you again.

"Conventional wisdom", huh?  Anyone with common sense and a functioning set of ears can determine the differences in their instrumentation and playing on this show vs. gigs from late '76.

It's just like your claim that Binghamton is from Apr '77.  Yeah, you have that incorrect, too, btw.  I won't even bother to point out the holes in that notion.  You're simply too thick.  You've proven w/ this Seattle nonsense that it's not worth the trouble.  And aren't you the guy who swore that the circulating Hartford '81 tape is off the soundboard?

Keep telling yourself all that, expert!
