So, January 6th is the Epiphany, also known as Three Kings Day. This is a traditional gift giving day for many countries, as it marks the arrival of the 3 Kings. Put out your shoes with some straw (or other food for horses/camels) and, if you've been good, presents! Coal if you are a baddy!

It's also the twelfth day of Christmas, if that song has ever left you wondering. :)

Greyfriar, in my sister's town of Rheinberg, kids go around collecting money for charity. If you donate, they mark your house with the initials of each king, plus the year. My sister has a string of C, B, M + date in chalk by her front door. Ever heard of that where you live?

I'm well aware of that tradition, this kids are called the Sternsinger (Starsingers).

They walk from house to house, dressed like the three kings, singing some religious songs. One of them carries a wooden stake with a big star on top. The meaning of the C, B, M, is actually Christus Benicat Mansurem, which means Christ bless this house.

Thank you, Grey! My girlfriend posted this to me today about writing with chalk over the doorway and blessing the house on Epiphany, but having the C, B, M stand for the wise men Caspar, Balthazar and Melchior didn't seem quite right. I'm not sure why the author of the article couldn't just put in the Latin; I like it better!

My understanding is that it represents both. :)

(The letters have two meanings. They are the initials of the customary names of the Three Magi: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. They also abbreviate the Latin words “Christus Mansionem Benedicat”, “May Christ bless the house”. The year is divided before and after the these letters. The crosses (+) represent the protection of the Christ.)

Happy Epiphany, everyone! It's the 12th day of Christmas, and I hope the season was good to all the little RUSH fans out there! Now get some rest, because Carnaval/Mardis Gras is just around the corner...
