  1. 1. Which prog epic shall reign supreme?

Just curious if there were any other Octavarium lovers on here. Both are fantastic in my opinion, but this is the Rush forum after all so I think we all know who will win. ;) Despite that, I think Octavarium is just slightly better, although I do adore Xanadu.

I call Octavarium DT'S nod to Pink Floyd. the Score Version iss awesome.

Mick

Indeed! It's a perfect song from beginning to end in my opinion. There is a LOT of Pink Floyd influence to be sure, plus several references to them. Brilliant song and album.

Being a fan of both songs this is a hard choice.

As much as I enjoy Octavarium,Xanadu is just pure class and HAS to get my vote!

plus it's funny.........For Xanadu being called an epic by some.........it's really to the point.

again i love it.

but i think i appreciate the journey of Octavarium a little more.

Mick

Me too, the soft beginnings to the frantic circular middle to the intense "TRAPPED INSIDE THIS OCTAVARIUM!" and finishing with and incredible orchestral end, it's the perfect crescendo, a brilliant build up to a phenomenal end.

I played Octavarium live this week...it was really boring tbh.

Xanadu is great! All the time!

Replace Octavarium with Count Of Tuscany, and you will find a different answer.

I am sorry dude...it just never ended! The studio version is awesome though.

Count Of Tuscany is one of my favourite discoveries of 2015, and I love it so much!

I love you man but, you're wrong about Octavarium being boring live. It's all good though, at least you like the studio. :P

i'm beginning to think you just prefer Studio stuff in general over live

which is fine, BTW.

I just love that score version, lol

Well I love most bands live, just not post 2000 Rush!

And I was not in the mood for an epic, so that may have jaded my view on Octavarium live.

i don't know if i agree with the little melody critique of Octavarium. it's on now. melody all over to my ears.

Mick

Where? :)

Lol. I wonder that a lot with DT.

Octavarium. The only parts of the song I don't particularly like are Portnoy's two sections. Full Circle is just a bunch of references to other songs. The guy isn't ever very subtle about his influences... Intervals is a lame sort of climax, but it does the job I guess.

Xanadu doesn't have any flaws though, so it was a close call. It's just that where Octavarium is strong it's very strong.

Ha. But thats not to say I dont find it. I often do. Its often there. DTs music is not about the hook. They do tend to meander with their structures which makes the melody a bit difficult to place. The first 4 or so albums have a ton of melody all the way up to Metropolis and since then they do tend to be more explorative.

yea the wanking kinda took off at six Degrees. A lot of that was due to acquiring Jordan. i don't mind it. but if it's not your thing you will hate DT, lol

Exactly. It's certainly not for everyone but I'm REALLY getting into them lately. Octavarium and Metropolis Part 2 I feel can match the best of Rush, possibly exceeding it.
