My first show was the the p/g tour and it was there.  I have a few friends who attended St. Louis shows on the Signals tour (10.12.1982 and 10.15.1982 - the apparently played a show at the University of Illinois in between those dates) who say they remember it - but they were perpetually stoned back then, so who knows.  I asked a few folks in Texas who likely attended Signals shows in Texas (March, 1983) and they think it was there, but they were likely also perpetually stoned, so who knows.  The boots I have suggest it did not show up until around Signals, but it could have been earlier I guess.

As for the love it or hate it notion.  I tend to love it.  Corny?  Sure.  Cheesy?  Yep.  Fun?  I will go with yes.  My kids loved it (as well as the hand claps for TSOR) when they were old enough to go to shows, so that brings back warm memories.

My son in later years, though, pointed out the "heys" are an odd sort of message of collective obedience, which is interesting in the context of 2112.  That is probably not the message the band was going for with it, but it is an interesting thought.

collective obedience for fucksake, it's just a fun concert thing.

sheesh some people want to read something sinister into EVERYTHING.

It sounds to me like it started on the Signals Tour.  The Hey's are missing from the following bootleg recordings:

- Hemispheres - Nov 20, 1978 - Tucson - https://www.youtube....h?v=r7d2NyzhIAM
- Hemispheres - May 28, 1979 - Frankfurt - https://www.youtube....h?v=UT0kWaLfHzY
- Permanent Waves - Feb 14, 1980 - St. Louis - https://www.youtube....h?v=pQWYIIV9lbU
- Moving Pictures - Jun 16, 1981 - Anaheim - https://www.youtube....h?v=KW_VMkzqlkQ

However, the Hey's are clearly audible here:

- Signals - May 25, 1983 - Edinburgh, UK - https://www.youtube....h?v=2EkyiKoBw60

So I suspect it was Signals tour when the Hey's started.

Yep. That's when I remember it. When I saw them on the Hemispheres and Moving Pictures tours they weren't doing it yet.

Thank you for the research. Some of the claims in here have been laughable and, no doubt, based in "hazy" memories.

Ok...quick follow up on this.  I found a recording from one of the early dates of the Exit...Stage Left Tour, and the Hey's are clearly audible here.

- October 31, 1981 - Deeside, Wales  https://www.youtube....h?v=89APxjCQprE

So I guess it was the ESL tour when the Hey's started.

Nice!

Didn't know about this show. Going to listen to it now. I always figured it began in the UK.

Thanks for putting this up.

Not new, actually. If you look at my profile, I've been here quite a long time. Since 2004 in fact. I just do more reading than posting. But thanks! Glad I could help settle the debate.

Now that's quite the understatement!

:laughing guy:

McLarney...Is that Irish?  I ask because I am headed to Ireland on the 30th.

This is a pretty good show.  At first I thought I had it, but I have the November 2, 1981 show which sounds similar.

It must have been sometime relatively recently but I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure they didn't do it when I saw Rush in 87 for the hold your fire tour. After that I don't think I heard them play 2112 but I only remember it for the most recent tour.
