Been through this my last 2 jobs. I asked for and received a letter from my previous boss saying they were eliminating some positions. The next job was 2 layoffs in 5 years. After the 2nd one, I lost patience and moved on. It really wasn't hard to explain to potential employers since it's pretty common these days. If anything was my fault it was being too loyal and sticking around even when the inevitable became obvious.
