Your Top 20 Bands

Recommended Posts

It's nice to see that the conventional wisdom which states a Rush fan and a fan of straight-forward rock, punk, or hip hop cannot be the same person is debunked in this thread.

I've always suspected that music addicts tend to cross all manner of boundaries.

When I used to always get flack on this forum for stuff I love, I was always a bit put out.

Coz to me...a band that is able to draw fans from any background is special.

Why slate a fan who doesn't fit the norm?

I'm as happy with Rush as I am Beyoncé, Beatles or Baroness.

I just enjoy music and like what I like.

Annoys me when people claim open mindedness as long as it's obscure.

Well I can’t do 20, but I can do five.

Queen

Rush

Muse

Genesis

David Bowie

After that things get really blurry. How do The Beatles stack up against Yes? Would I take Soundgarden over Aerosmith? What about my favorite current groups like White Reaper, Misterwives, and Florence + The Machine? Do I need a separate list for strictly metal bands? Does Dream Theater defy that notion? So many questions.

I've been thinking of something like this. Let's see if I can limit it to twenty. My favorite top twenty list of artists, bands, and groups not in order except for number one, which will not change, and hasn't changed are:

Rush, U2, the Police, Triumph, Yes (When Jon Anderson, was in the band, and group as the lead singer), Genesis, Queensryche (When Geoff Tate, was in the band, and group as the lead singer), Judas Priest (With Rob Halford, as the lead singer in the band, and group), Iron Maiden (With Bruce Dickinson, as the lead singer in the band, and group), Scorpions, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Journey (When Steve Perry, was in the band, and group as the lead singer), Foreigner (When Lou Gramm, was in the band, and group as the lead singer), Styx (Without Lawrence Gowan, in the band, and group, and Dennis DeYoung, is), Bruce Springsteen (As a solo artist, and when he is in, and part of the E Street Band), Tom Petty (As a solo artist, and when he was in, and with the Heartbreakers), Queen (When Freddie Mercury, was in the band, and group as the lead singer, and without Adam Lambert, as the lead singer), Kim Mitchell, Tom Cochrane, Red Rider/Tom Cochrane & Red Rider

NIce thread. As others have mentioned, the lists aren't as predictable as one would expect.

My list would be:

Rush

The Grateful Dead

The Allman Brothers

Led Zeppelin

Jimi Hendrix (surprised Jimi wasn't on more lists)

Govt Mule

Pink Floyd

Black Crowes

Yes

Cream (throw Blind Faith in with them)

Derek And The Dominos

next tier

The Who

Tom Petty

Rolling Stones

Black Sabbath

The Doors

Jethro Tull

Neil Young

That appears to only be 18, but the next bands would be a tier below, so I'll stop here.
