Heavy rains and flooding in the surrounding cities of Kyoto, Kobe, and Wakayama in the last 48 or so hours. The storms have affected ALL trains the last couple of days which affected daily life but much worse - more people died due to this storm than the earthquake just a couple of weeks ago

That sucks...'Mother' Nature still rules the roost.

Body count at over 120. Surely there are more as a few dozen are still missing.

Thanks. Given the recent earthquake and torrential rains and floods, Mrs. B is understandably worried that another natural disaster is lurking. I told her that the only thing we can do is be prepared for such instances. Example: I’ve had two emergency bags (one with food/drink, the other with other necessities & cash) at the ready for the last several years. [i go through and check both bags’ contents at the start of every new season.] Other than that and knowing some emergency/evac procedures, there’s nothing more we can do about natural disasters.

156 confirmed dead now, 60 still missing. Jeez.

Luckily, my old friend and his gf in Hiroshima (one of the worst hit prefectures) are safe and sound.

That's horrible! Do these areas have a history for flooding or do you think that global warming may be having some impact on the floods?

I think the two hardest hit areas were Hiroshima and Okayama prefectures which are next to each other. I’m not sure about Hiroshima but it had been predicted that flood waters could’ve brought major damage to Okayama prefecture due to the geography AND the absolute need to improve dams. I believe that there had been a plan to improve those dams in 2019 too. Too late now.

I do remember around this time last year the death toll being a few dozen due to similar hard rains. This recent storm & flood’s death toll has now passed 200.

Global warming having an impact? Yes? Probably? At least ‘maybe’ that’s for sure.

My grandpa passed away on Saturday, at 84 years old. He was the best grandpa ever, and the greatest, most selfless person I’ve known. My grandma got sick at 40 and he stayed by her side and took care of her every single day right up until he passed. Being with him was a favourite part of my childhood. I will always look back fondly on the carefree afternoons when we would spend all our time together playing Contra (his favourite video game), reading his poetry, and enjoying the delicious food he cooked, even though he always saved the best parts for others. I wish I could've gotten the chance to hold his hand and say goodbye to him and tell him I love him.

Sorry to hear this, Lemonycake. I'm glad to hear he was a positive person in your life and that he left a good impression on you! My grandfather was a good person also, and he dedicated his life to helping others although it was through religion. He passed on in 1972. My father was a fun person also, and I was distraught when he passed fifteen years ago. It's going to be rough for a little while, but keep up thinking of the good times, and it will pass. Once again, condolences!

I hope things look up for you soon! :hug2:

Thank you so much, OldRUSHfan! Yes, I'm really glad that I had such a fun and caring person in my life. I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather. I'm sure he was a great person also, and same goes for your father. It must have been really tough for you when he passed, but like you said, the good thing is we have these fond memories we can look back on. I appreciate the kind words! I'll be okay :hug2:

As if the earthquake last month and torrential rains this month weren’t enough, now it’s a deadly heatwave killing off dozens...

http://edition-m.cnn.com/2018/07/23/asia/japan-heatwave-deadly-intl/index.html?r=https%3A%2F%2Fedition.cnn.com%2F

Here it’s 36C (96F) but the humidity apparently makes it feel like 44C (111F). Sheesh

I can't believe people who don't understand the workings of weather. Learn! Understanding is the key! I learned all I could after I found out weather KILLED someone. Come on, folks. Ignorance is no excuse!

TUathWX.jpgThis is NOT pointed at you, Johnny, People in general need to know this stuff.

Yup. Weather can kill people. So can this ovoid planet we live on. A lot of stuff to learn about. Horrible [as we look at it] stuff will happen. Observing sorrow and condolences is required, but surprise should not be.

Alzheimer's

f**k you, Alzheimer's. f**k you all the way to hell.

I agree, I'm so sorry you have to deal with it. My mother in law had it and lived for another 10 years after she was diagnosed. It really took two people as my father in law pretty much died of a broken heart afterward. :(
