I saw Carl Palmer on Sunday and it was wonderful. He still kicks major ass at his age, though i could tell he was worn out. He did a crazy 10-minute drum solo that I filmed every second of which I'll post on youtube in a bit.

He was such a nice guy and he told stories to the audience in between songs. I didn't get to meet him because I had nothing to get signed, but I did snap a photo of him signing merch .02 seconds before yelling, "Can we get the lights on over here? Well if you're working on it why aren't they on?" (not in a mean way, of course). If you like ELP, he is definitely worth seeing.

Looks like Simon was thirsty!

I love this band. Seen them about 10 times already. Met him a few times and got some band signed items. They're one of my favorites. Some people don't like this music played without keyboards, but I love the arrangements and Paul and Simon are great too!

i think it’s a cool twist on ELP’s music. the keyboards are magnificent but Emerson’s setup was absolutely gigantic.

Saw George Thorogood and the Destroyers last week at Massey Hall in Toronto. Great R&R show. The guy is a real showman. Edited by Syrinx

I saw U2 Wednesday night and it was amazing. I loved the stage production with the 2 big screens in the middle. They kicked off thier tour here and there was media coverage about it and there was bad weather coming in later that night (by the time the concert was over, it was just raining, nothing severe). They played some of my favorite songs...Who's gonna ride your wild horses, I will follow, Staring at the Sun and they sounded great! I did some periscopes and took lots of video and pics. I think I'm still trying to come down from it. They have been one of my favorite bands since I was a teenager.

I really wish I could have seen them during The Joshua Tree tour last year but they didn't come to Oklahoma and I didn't have the money for Dallas or Houston. I'm hoping to run across a bootleg (good sounding) from one of the shows last year.

Last night I saw Ghost and let me tell you, it was incredible. Tobias Forge is such a sweet guy. I was super excited for the meet and greet and I almost cried when i came up to him and said hello. As soon as he shook my hand i was instantly calm. Then he held my hand and we walked to the camera and took the photos and he hugged me tight. After we took the photos i thanked him and said that it was so nice to meet him, and he looked me in the eye and said, "Thank you very much, it's great to meet you too!" and i f***ing died. After that I got to see the dead Papas in their caskets so that was cool as hell, here's me with Papa II:

I got early access to the venue so right after the m&g, me and a friend that i made in line hauled ass to the stage and we managed to get 6th row center. When the show started there were some obnoxious drunk dudes that were pushing people (i have the worst luck with being right next to people like that at concerts) and i was moved back and couldnt see past the tall guy in front of me. But shortly into the first song people just started pushing those guys out of the pit, and a guy that i was chatting with found me, then grabbed my hand and pulled me back to my original spot so i was able to get some really good pics and vids. Here's some under the cut:

Even though i was sweaty as f**k (and covered in the confetti that rained down during Mummy Dust) i was having the time of my life. Their performance was so energetic and Tobias was being his usual goofy self when talking to the audience. They did so f***ing great, and it was really cool to hear their unreleased songs that will be on the new album. I really wanna see them at The Forum in november, i hope i can!

Oh and i have to include the fact that I met the one and only Earl, Rushhead666! That was cool as hell, it was so fun talking to him!

Saw Sevendust last night at a little hole in the wall place in Lancaster.

Was a great show. The venue probably safely holds about 600 people so they promptly packed about 1200 in there. The crowd was over the top with energy and the band responded and delivered.

I enjoyed it.

Saw my first Steven Wilson show in SLC on Sunday.

Really happy I drove myself to buy tickets in February. It was at possibly the best SLC venue, I was fifth row the whole time, and just had a great time. Liking Rush's quality of concert performance, it was nice to see that he's indeed on that level.

I had not looked at a setlist, nor have I even close to listened to every SW/PT album. So getting to hear a lot of "genuinely new to me" material in concert was a fun treat.

Counting intermissions and opening act, this show was 4.0 hours long. Not bad for $31!!

Saw the final show of the As The Crow Flies tour (Chris Robinson's most recent band, of the Black Crowes) in Portland, OR. A Robinson project never disappoints, and this show was no exception to that rule. He surrounds himself with musician's that make an art out of showboating while staying perfectly in the pocket of a groove. Just a flawless evening thst featured all the Crowes standards you'd want, plus great covers of CSN's Almost Cut My Hair, Deep Purple's Hush, and a Marshall Tucker tune whose title escapes me. The star of the night was up and coming guitarist Marcus King, who absolutely stole the show.

To top everything off, I saw the show with three of my closest friends from high school.

Saw Primus and Mastodon on Saturday. Weird concert pairing. Mastodon was great. They sounded tight and they played a very long set for an opening act. We were there to see them specifically.

Primus is still weird, but in a good way. I enjoyed them more than I thought I would. I didn't know they put out a new record last December. A bit of a concept record which they played in entirety at the show. They also sounded really good and had a neat visual show on the screens behind the stage.

Couple the show with a nice dinner out with my brother and sister in law, I must say I had a really good time!

On a whim I went to see the Scorpions last night.

They were unexpectedly fabulous. Their songs are bulletproof, based around melody and harmony. It's a big production and they really turn up to work. Older rockers living a teetotal lifestyle to keep delivering the goods.

They were supported by Megadeth. Oh dear.

They are comprehensively outgunned by modern metal which is much more visceral and rhythmic. They play incredibly well, but it's an older style of shredding thrash. The trouble is metal has moved on, what once sounded intense and vibrant has lost its punch, and so Megadeth's star is waning.

Also the lead singer complained we weren't loud enough. Well, we're not your crowd. You're a support act. Never imply the crowd aren't worthy of you.

The crowd no longer go wild as you have made yourself a heritage act.

In short, Megaduff = Mehtal.

Dead & Co. Citi field NY June 16, 2018.

Not a huge fan but I went with three of my friends. My one friend has connects so we had VIP experience pre-show which meant a private area with bar, merch area and bathrooms.

The band came on at 7:50pm, there was a intermission and we exited the stadium around 11:30pm. The show clocked in at 3 hours and I loved it. A perfect night for a concert with the temps in the low 80's with low humidity. Most people stood and/or danced for most of the show. The pot was flowing and everybody was just having a great time.

After reading reviews and talking with other Deadheads, they said this show is one for the books. I'm glad I witnessed it.

It's interesting to hear that about Megadeth. I didn't realize there were newer types of thrash metal. You know Dave Mustaine is never gonna acknowledge it! Glad to hear the Scorpions brought it, and I love your last comment about mehtal!

I saw that show & thought Megadeth was really good. The new songs off Dystopia were excellent & the old gems like The Conjuring & Mechanix sounded fresh as a daisy. Mustaine's rant was a bore though. You get at least one per show now.

Scorpions killed it though. The 70s medley was fantastic & even the newer material that I don't particularly care for like We Built This House On A Rock & Going Out With A Bang came over well.

Just came back from Primus/Mastodon show at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. Primus set got cut short by some noise curfew around 11:00 but kickass show nonetheless. Jello from Dead Kennedys made a special appearance with Primus and sung Holiday in Cambodia.

Haha, we'll have to agree to disagree on all of that, Disco! I felt completely the opposite - thought Megadeth owned the day. They were AWESOME. And Mustaine's thing about the crowd not being loud enough was hilarious - "The voices in my head are louder than you!" So much funnier than "Let me ****ing hear you!" a la Buckcherry

Bearing in mind it was a festival I didn't class them as support, as such, just second on the bill. And a lot of people were there to see them above all else, including me. I loved the way they came on stage and just got on with it. I quite enjoyed a couple of the other bands I saw, too, particularly Stone Broken.

I can't stand Scorpions and nothing that night changed my mind, I'm afraid.

I saw Kansas at the local casino Sunday night and they were fantastic! I had seen them once before at our state fair but there was so many people we couldn't see very well. In my opinion, they are one of the best sounding concert bands out there today. I will definitely see them again when I can :)

Here is the setlist:

I'm glad Megaduff were connecting with other folk there - and, hey, at least three Rush Forumers there, how about that?

For me Megaduff played very well. It's a very high level buuuuuut to me it just sounded dated. I also couldn't really understand what it was meant to be about or the atmosphere they were trying create. The backscreens were showing images of war and destruction, but they seemed cartoony rather than apocolyptic.

I think the underlying issue (which is a problem with me not them) is I only have enough space in my head for one or two metal bands at a time. At the moment it's only Gojira with a dash of Metallica.

Scorpions are very much a swim in the melodic shallow end of rock full of **Everyday Sexism Alert** chick-bait melody. But, hey, I like it!

PS Willow, you may not recall but we were both at a Porcupine Tree gig some years ago. I posted here that the support band sucked (Amplifier?) and you were able to correct me then too!

All my big concerts ranked, because why not, it's a slow day for me:

1. Rush R40 2015

2. Queen 2017

3. Coldplay 2016

4. Imagine Dragons 2017

5. Red Hot Chili Peppers 2017

All of these were great, the Chili Peppers just didn't have the most astounding setlist in the world that night (they'd just played Sir Psycho Sexy of all things the night before, yet for us it was pretty much hits and more hits, and not even Under The Bridge), and the friend I went with was one of my newer college friends who I wasn't really super close with at the time but offered me a free ticket I wasn't about to pass up. The performance was second to none though. New guitarist was actually a big highlight, probably more entertaining to watch and hear than Frusciante would've been at his age. Flea was fantastic, Keidis was charming and strange, and Chad sounded huge. Wonderful band just to watch, I only wish the set had been a little better, and that the drunk dude next to me and the completely stoned potheads next to my friend hadn't bothered us so much, lol.

I saw Greta Van Fleet at Rebel Night Club in Toronto on Friday. It was absolutely incredible!! One of the best shows I have seen in a long, long time. These "kids" have captured the essence of classic rock and everything we love about the music we grew up with, added youthful "vigour" and their own style, and are in my opinion the best new band in years. The show was way better than I could have expected. Top notch all the way. I am certain they won't be playing clubs again after this tour.

Robert Plant

Lake Tahoe, CA, at Harvey's Outdoor Amphitheater

June 23 2018

A last-minute decision to go, when I found out that tix were going for $20 on Groupon. I got four and took the whole family. I'd never seen Robert Plant in any incarnation (Zep or solo), so to get the chance to see him, with my son and daughter, was a dream come true. I has seen a setlist online that said he'd open with When The Levee Breaks, so, as the lights went down I was ripe with anticipation for that intro drum beat. But instead it was a guitar riff...which I instantly recognized as The Lemon Song! I went nuts. He followed with Four Sticks and other Zep songs that included Babe I'm Gonna Leave You and a stunning extended version of Going To California. Plant surrounds himself with incredible musicians, and the they went off on wonderfully hypnotic tangents throughout the night.

My son is 12, but he's familiar with Zeppelin's material (I homeschooled him for a year, and part of the curriculum was a heavy dose of Led-ucation). To keep him engaged, I challenged him with an over/under bet on the number of times Plant would sing "Baby" during the night. We agreed on 50, and he took the over. Sure enough, the over looked to be an easy bet as Plant made his way through the Zep material, especially when he got to Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. But just as my son was ready to collect, the band skipped over the "Babe, babe, babe, babe, babe..." section, leaving the number up to that points at exactly 50. It wasn't till just before we were about to leave that the Lad caught a lone "Baby" in the final song from Carry Fire (Plant's latest release).

Plant sounded great, and if you have a chance to catch him, do.
