Bit odd that they chose the Luling Watermelon Tower as Austin's symbol when Luling is an hour's drive away. I'm guessing they drove by it at some point since it's on I-10 and if coming from Houston, it's not the shortest route but an okay route to Austin along US 183. There are also tons of long-distance bicycle rides held out in that part of Texas.

Yes, it makes you wonder if it's something they remembered from their journeys, or something Neil saw from his motorcycle!

Yep - I'm guessing that these are landmarks they've seen on their travels. :)

I live in Austin and had no idea what tower they were highlighting, so thanks for pointing that out. It is odd they referenced something not even in the city. The UT Tower seems like the obvious landmark, but maybe they avoided that because of the shooting. Could've been the capitol or something from 6th street too. Oh well, we got a show here, so I'm happy enough for that.

I didn't notice the Tree at the concert but when I saw the photo here, it cracked me up. I think you might be right Blueschica & Amy, probably Neil's idea. It is out in the desert on the way to Wendover Nevada, bet he saw it on one of his motorcycle trips. It is kinda strange but cool looking, driving along looking at barren salt flats and then it appears out of nowhere.

Now for the slogan for SLC, that has me scratching my head (I laughed when I saw it at the show) I'm guessing it has something to do with the marriage equality suits here a while back??

My daughter and her girlfriend had fun this afternoon trying to find out about the guy that looks like Twinkie the kid. They found him! He is more an Alberta landmark than a Calgary one- he is Pinto MacBean! He is actually somewhat southeast of Calgary. . .

I've lived in Alberta (near Calgary) all of my life, and this is the first time I've seen or heard of Pinto MacBean. Bow Island is a couple hours south of Calgary. Edited by rock n roll over

This is a pretty cool thread, and at the Philly show was fun to see them sorta make fun of our "huge bell"

This is how I feel about the Tampa slogan. I myself fell in love with Tampa and surrounding areas so much when I discovered it, I moved here built a career, raised a family & made Tampa my adopted home town. On the flip side I have run across more than a few that cannot gain more than a Meh feeling for the area. So the "Love it or Leave it" struck an immediate chord with me when I saw the slogan. Along with the "Twistie Treat" Icon (which family & I have been to personally many, many times) I had the feeling they were using (obscure) land marks they had either seen or visited in their many many traverses across our continent. As someone in the early daze of this thread pointed out it truely does mean they love us and more exciting than that they pay attention to the simple little (& some facinating) things of the areas they visit.

Yes, some of the things in the photos are unusual! The picture for Lincoln, Nebraska, was this kind of sculpture called Carhenge, and as someone noted in the thread, it is pretty much on the opposite side of the state from Lincoln. It's been fun to see what they have come up with- not always the most obvious thing; it makes you wonder if these are things they have seen from the road and remembered or that Neil has seen from his motorcycle. I wish I had time to go and visit some of the landmarks this summer! :P
