Even Louise Fletcher, the actress who won an Oscar for this performance, cannot watch the film....specifically because of her own character's cruelty..... :o

Barlow the vampire in the original 1979 miniseries of Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot scared the *#@% out of me as a kid. I slept with a light on and clutching a crucifix for days. :D

Memories of Captain Howdy/the demon Pazuzu/the possessed Regan in The Exorcist are still prone to freaking me out if it's late and I'm home alone. Even the quick cut shots through the movie to the demon's face.

I saw The Silence Of The Lambs at the cinema, and when Lecter first got loose in his square metal cage, I was genuinely scared.....

I was five when Jaws came out, and I'm still kind of afraid of open water.

You watched it when you were 5 years old? Seriously?

For me, the scariest scene is when Hooper is in the shark cage. I think I was 11 years old when I saw it.

When old man Ben Gardner's head came into view in his submerged boat...... :o :o

When Brody was dumping bait into the water, and the shark popped up to say HI..... :o :o :o

Those were shocking moments. Over and done in a second. The shark cage scene terrified me. The shark ripped the cage apart!

"You know the thing about a shark, he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah then you hear that terrible high pitch screamin' and the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin' they all come in and rip you to pieces."

It may have taken just a second, but I saw Ben Gardner's head in my sleep for months......

Oh, no, that was confusing. I probably saw the whole movie around the age of ten, but I didn't need to see the movie as a kid: The TV commercials freaked me out, and culturally it was everywhere.

I don't know if this qualifies but I remember being scared terribly as a kid by an old Vincent Price movie called The Tingler.

I grabbed this synopsis off of IMDB:

Dr. Warren Chapin is a pathologist who regularly conducts autopsies on executed prisoners at the State prison. He has a theory that fear is the result of a creature that inhabits all of us. His theory is that the creature is suppressed by our ability to scream when fear strikes us. He gets a chance to test his theories when he meets Ollie and Martha Higgins, who own and operate a second-run movie theater. Martha is deaf and mute and if she is unable to scream, extreme fear should make the creature, which Chapin has called the Tingler, come to life and grow. Using LSD to induce nightmares, he begins his experiment.

There's a scene in the movie where the Tingler is crawling along the floor in a crowded movie theater. That gave me nightmares for a long time.

Is that the one where they actually wired the seats in some theaters to vibrate a bit?
