Some of the first 45s I ever bought in 1978 were Don't Look Back/The Journey and the reissue of More Than A Feeling/Long Time. Such great songs.

When I made the jump to FM radio in 1981, I heard the rest of the debut and bought it shortly thereafter. What an album.

So, the third line of "hitch a ride": according to almost every lyric site, it's "steel idle trees to pity." What I hear is "steal out of the trees to pity"; I've also seen "still I try to ease the pity" (which doesn't sound right).

I've heard a case made for "steel idle trees to pity" - the steel idle trees being office buildings - but if that's actually the line, I think it's pretty damned awkward. I don't think the lyrics were ever printed on the sleeve, so it's all guesswork?

I hear "steal outta the trees to pity"

Right. Steel idle trees to pity sounds like it's out of a f***ing Shakespeare tragedy. Not saying whoever wrote the boston lyrics couldn't be poetic, but it just seems weird and awkward. Although there's that "words of hail their minds are into" line, too...

It sounds very much like a song that had unfinished lyrics when the record company asked for the master tapes.

The songs was originally titled "San Francisco", as I recall, so a reflective lament on an east coast jungle of concrete and steel in favor of a verdant west coast peace haven makes sense to me, coming from Tom Scholz.

ETA: "San Francisco Day"

Boston made a perfect album, at least musically, on that first go round.

My son went on a trip to Boston about three years ago with school.

He's a music junkie like me and he doesn't get caught up in the juvenile games that so many play where some generation has 'better' music than another. I put together a mix of Boston bands for him, some he knew and some he didn't, to make the long bus ride more enjoyable.

Boston of course had the first at-bat, and he immediately was a fan. Every song on that first album was a radio staple. That is rare and only happens when a band really nails it.

They aren't my favorite band by a long shot, but that album was excellent.

On our local classic rock station, every track from that 1st album is still on heavy rotation. As you say, it's perfect beginning to end.

Boston is easily one of the greatest debuts of all time, and I'd be hard pressed to come up with another debut so absolutely perfect.

Sometimes you hear a band you've listened to for a very long time suddenly with fresh ears. That is what just happened to me with Boston today.

They were really good. :)

A fun watch, here's a breakdown of More Than A Feeling. I think I posted this in the production thread a while back.

I've always liked, and listened to Boston. I enjoy listening to their "Boston" to "Corporate America" c.ds, and music.
