2112 is their masterwork, their best song of all time. Everything about the song is absolute Rush perfection. Hemispheres, while awesome is it's own right, doesn't stand a ghost of a chance.

Dude, I agree.

I think a lot of fans love Hems for all the same reasons I dislike it. Sure, it is beautifully played. But I don't like Geddy's vocals on that track. Nothing about it lingers in my memory, and for a song as long as this one, it really should.

But never mind. On occassion I have been blown away by it, but it isn't a consistent favourite, I really have to be in the mood for it, and that is not how I notmally feel about Rush music.

Hemispheres and Signals are, in my honest opinion, he bands most overrated albums by a long shot. But to each his own, they are deservedly very special to many fans. And I guess it could be argued that both these efforts are in fact underrated.

But that is fine for them. I am merely stating my opinion. As albums, both 2112 and Hemispheres are 50/50 great/good. And I am content with that!

Good!

But not everybody agrees with the majority verdict.

I would take VT, Presto, MP, AFTK, PeW, GUP, HYF, 2112 and CoS over Hems any day of the week.

If you had a choice of only one to see in it's entirety this tour, which would it be?

hemispheres by a long shot. 2112 is sooooooooooo overplayed and they use it as goof off time because they're probably bored with it.

I would actually go one step further and not even play 2112 this tour in exchange for some good deeper tracks. but that's not gonna happen.

Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres
The section starting at 1:57 and going through to the vocal is perhaps the greatest piece of music this band has ever written.

It's sex for the ears.

To my untrained ear, it sounds to me like Alex made great strides in his playing from 2112 to Hemispheres.  He sounds to me still feeling his way in 2112, but had become the master in Hemispheres.

We've been through this multiple times before with the same results. So no matter what comes out on top this time, Hemispheres wins.

They pushed themselves a lot during Hemispheres too. Geddy said they were actually playing above their technical ability at the time, though obviously it pushed them to get better very quickly.  I'm sure all of the live playing helped all of them improve a lot between 2112 and Hemispheres. They definitely honed their chops during that time.

Truly great artists always let the music dictate the technicality, not the other way around *cough* Dream Theater *cough*. Hemispheres is a great example of this.
