I started this thread because I am curious to see how these two epic songs fare against each other.

I edited this post to add that I would be interested in hearing why you prefer one to the other.  :)

Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres. The only song that might be better is Xanadu

2112

Better, more varied, and more interesting music, better story-telling, and a better match between music and story.  I love Hemispheres, but this isn't a close call for me.

I admire Hemispheres more than I actually like it.

I love 2112. Easy peasy.

I love 2112, no question about that. I remember the first time I ever heard it, and it was Earth-shattering.

But it's Hemispheres, without a doubt.

My eleven year old son used some crafty (and pretty much faultless) logic to determine that Hemispheres is my favorite song, ever, by anyone. It surprised me, because whenever he asks me what my favorite song is, I always tell him that's an impossible question for me to answer. But he's right. I suppose it is my absolute favorite.

:)

Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres is the second best song that Rush have ever made! The only song that can beat it is The Fountain Of Lamneth.

I do love 2112 as well, it is a masterpiece, and I know every drum beat on it, and I know every word that Geddy is singing. But Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres and The Fountain Of Lamneth is just a step better somehow!

I still think part one should be included in the comparison since Hemispheres is just the second part of Cygnus X-1. Otherwise, why not just make 2112 only the finale?

It's not a comparison.  I wanted to see which song was better liked.  Or loved.  Zumbi had started a thread with these two songs up against The Fountain of Lamneth.  I wanted to see how just 2112 and Hemispheres did without the FOL.  That's why I started the thread.

Both are among their finest work. I like 2112 more.

Possessing no musical talent, it always awes me in others.  Listening to Hemispheres right now, I am in awe of the fact that this is a composition by three men not yet 25.

I listened to 2112 too.  Out of the two of them, I think it sounds a lot more dated than Hemispheres.

2112 has the whole middle portion after the presention........it kinda drags and comes back at the Grand Finale.  I've been known to grab a bite to eat during the whole middle, lol

They were released on different albums. The analogy to leaving out Grand Finale doesn't really make sense lol

For sure you have enough time to pop something in the microwave, or make a quick peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

That's not what I said.  I said that leaving Cygnus X-1 out of a discussion of Hemispheres is like leaving everything out of 2112 BUT the finale.

Ok, well whatever, my point is still valid :D
