I know there are a few threads on here based on the works of Alan Parsons but this guy and his band need an official thread.

Ok so I know after "Eye In The Sky" they went totally POP! But the first six albums should be owned by everyone one of you who reads this!!!

"Eye In The Sky" was my first album by Alan Parsons and I was hooked back in 1982! I was only 14 years old!

Of course back then all I could do was go backwards and get the other five albums from the past!

They are all EPIC! The production is perfect! Gee I wonder why "Dark Side Of The Moon" sounded so good? Well Alan was the engineer!!!!

You guys love your prog stuff so do yourselves a favor and go out and get the first six Alan Parsons Project records!!!

The song "Old And Wise" which is the last track on "Eye In The Sky" is going to be a song played at my funeral.

It says it all kids.

I was lucky enough to see the Alan Parsons Project a few years ago at Yoshi's in San Francisco. I was able to meet Alan after the show. He was totally cool!

Cheers!

Hey Earl!! To think it took so long to have an official APP thread!!

The first album, Tales of Mistery, is totally prog, with even an orchestral suite on side 2. It's still one of my favourite albums ever.

I Robot is hit or miss for me, side 1 is nearly perfect, side 2 a total nonsense apart the two last instrumentals.

Pyramid is good, solid, with some masterpieces (In the Lap of the Gods, another prog gem with boleros, choirs and all) and some ill-thought efforts (Pyramania).

Eve is probably the weakest APP album, with just one great piece, Lucifer, and a lot of sentimental crap.

Turn of a Friendly Card is "uncompromised Eye in the Sky", it's the last step before taking the pop route. Another suite in 5 movements on side 2, it's another great album.

They are all out there with bonus tracks and all so go get them!

Hello my friend! YES! "Tales Of Mystery" is incredible! A nice homage to Edgar Allan Poe! Also a great narration by the late great Orson Welles!

God I love Alan Parsons Project!

I remember even as a teenager when Ammonia Avenue came out I was very disappointed. So POP!

it came out around the same time as "Signals." Upon my first listening of that album I actually cried. "WHERE THE FUCKK IS THE GUiTAR?"

Well I got over that and fell in love with "Signals."

Ammonia Avenue STINKS! But I still own it.

Also "Vulture Culture" was not very good. UGH! Clever name for a pop record. UGH!

Oh yes! I have all the Japanese pressings with the bonus tracks!! I complain about the albums after "Eye In The Sky" yet I still have them all!!

I think Alan Parsons is the greatest producer on the planet.

It was a rare treat seeing him at Yoshi's. Alan was in the back playing the guitar. His band was in front of him.

Eric Woolfson! RIP! LEGEND VOCALIST!

"OLD AND WISE" will be performed at my funeral!

I can't wait to hear it as I look up at all of the mortal fools who had at least loved me once.........................

YES!!! Love Alan, finally getting to see him live on March 18th.

Turn Of A Friendly Card!!! Vocalist Chris Rainbow passed away yesterday. RIP.

No way my friend! That's terrible! I have some Chris Rainbow cds! WTF???? Eric is gone and now Chris! WOW!

When I saw Alan Parsons a few years ago they played the second side of "Turn Of A Friendly Card!" It was off the charts!!

Cheers my friend!

I may sound depressed in some of my threads but I am FINE!

Glad you are OK. Remember, many of us on here think the world of you, for your zaniness, candour, YOUR INEFFABLE LOYALTY TO ROCK, and your friendship.

Hey Pete! No way, Chris dead?! I had no idea! RIP.

You know, living in small town Italy and before the internet, I would listen to these records and have absolutely NO IDEA of how the singers looked like! I had to make up their faces in my mind just listening to the voices. For example, Colin Blunstone had the face of a very very old guy in my imagination, kinda like Gandalf! Because he has this deep, "old man" voice.

Another vocalist I made up the appearence was Elmer Gantry, he looked like a spaced-out hippie, because of the vibe I would get from Psychobabble and Maybe a Price.

Earl, I actually love Ammonia Avenue. It's the last great APP album for me. Sure, the orchestra is very tuned down, there's electronic drums and it has some failed pop songs like One More Reason, but Pipeline and the title track are super, Let me Go Home is fuc**in heavy and Prime Time is stellar. If you want guitar, check out Ian Bairnson's solo in that song! It's one of the best guitar solos ever!!

I've enjoyed the Project for quite a long time. My favorites are the older albums through Turn of a Friendly Card (excluding Eve, which is inexplicably bad given the time period). I'm not a huge fan of Eye in the Sky as I consider that album the one that led them down the path of commercialism. It does have a couple decent tunes on it though.

Of the later stuff, I like the song Stereotomy and Don't Answer Me. A majority of their later work I don't find interesting even a little bit.

I agree a lot with you, especially about Eve being the "bad" jewel in the crown. To think they had the two female vocalists from Dark Side of the Moon and gave them Shania Twain throwaway songs to sing... Still can't make my mind up about that.

The best thing on Eye in the Sky is Silence and I and owes a lot to Andrew Powel incredible arrangements.

What about Freudiana? There's some good stuff there as well!

I agree that Silence and I is the best off that one also. As with you, I'm not sure what they were thinking with Eve, but luckily it appears that they recognized their mistake. Ian Bairnson is almost totally non-existent on that one which is a crime.

I'm not overly familiar with Gaudi or Freudiana so I can't really comment on them. Someday I'll give them a listen.

Yet another group I must get more familiar with. I know Eye in the Sky and Turn of a Friendly Card well, but not much beyond that. So much music to discover. I was amazed to hear When I'm Old and Wise played in my local Shopping Centre a couple of weeks ago sandwiched between the usual chart fodder that it usually plays.

I am not that familiar with most of Alan Parsons' discography, but I always loved "I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You" since I was 10 years old.

DUDE!

YOU MUST GET EVERY ALBUM UP TO "EYE IN THE SKY!"

WILL DO!

Since we're on a jazz roll, here are two great SAX pieces by the Project!

This one has Mr. Mel Collins:

This one is Richard Cottle: ultra-poppy but sooo catchy!! Cottle, quite curiously, also played bass on Black Sabbath's "Headless Cross"!!!

Wow! Two albums I never fell in love with but I do dig them. Nice picks buddy! I prefer the older shit.

Ammonia Avenue is the last great APP album!

The title track about religion and spirituality was way ahead of its time.

"And who are we to critizice or scorn the things that they do?"

Eric was never a Dylan on lyrics but this time he got it bullseye, and 20 years in advance.
