Report: Dolphins were runner-up for Jimmy Graham

Posted by Nick Mensio on March 24, 2015, 3:21 PM EDT

The Jimmy Graham trade from the Saints to the Seahawks shook the NFL world on opening day of the new league year. Apparently, the Seahawks weren’t the only team the Saints talked to about Graham.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Dolphins “finished second” to Seattle as the runner-up in the Graham derby and were “aggressive” in trying to upgrade the tight end spot.

Being that the Saints were looking for line help, there’s a chance talks with the Dolphins revolved around contract-year center Mike Pouncey and Miami’s No. 14 overall pick in the upcoming draft. It would have been a steep price to pay, but both Graham and the Dolphins likely would have really enjoyed each other. Graham played football and basketball at the University of Miami, and new football czar Mike Tannenbaum was dead-set on overhauling Ryan Tannehill’s weaponry. Graham would have provided that needed intermediate and red-zone presence for Tannehill.

In the end, the Saints took the Seahawks’ deal of center Max Unger and the No. 31 overall pick in April’s draft. The Dolphins then replaced Charles Clay, whom Miami never really seemed too inclined to retain after slapping him with the transition tag, with former basketball-playing tight end Jordan Cameron on a two-year, $15 million contract.

Thank God you guys turned us down. I know Pouncey's a jerk and you never know when he's going to get suspended, and I don't how the contract stuff is right now, but Pouncey and the 14 is much better than Unger and the 31, at least IMO.

And the 14th pick is a lot better than the 31st!

If you have the right GM it is!

I wouldn't know what that's like though.

Well we have your guy Ireland in New Orleans now so think yourself lucky!

He, like both of us, is a Double Agent.

He's the one I'm gonna blame if the Jimmy Graham trade goes wrong! And all the other trades and cuts!

Blame the one that hired him. It's not like he didn't have a track record...

I think Ireland is pals with Loomis and Payton.

Ireland is the diseased branch of the Parcells tree. What Ray Handley is to the Parcells coaching tree, Ireland is to the Parcells front office tree.

Do you think Philbin will still be there this time next year? Do you want him there?

If he's still with the Fins I'll want him there, because it will have been a successful season (which means I don't think he'll be around.)

Maybe Stephen Ross will go after the premier coach on the free agent market next year. No, that could actually make sense since coaches don't count against the cap and preclude you from upgrading elsewhere.

They can pick up Rex Ryan after the Bills fire him in December.

Now that would be a Stephen Ross move.

At least he's not Jerry Jones.

True. But Jerruh seems to be more interested in "entertaining" these days than involving himself in the day to day operations of the team.

Dolphins sign Josh Freeman

Josh Freeman, the quarterback who rapidly went from one of the most promising young players in the NFL to a major disappointment, is getting another shot.

The Dolphins have agreed to a one-year contract with Freeman, according to Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report.

Freeman was the Buccaneers’ first-round draft pick in 2009, and quickly made the Bucs’ decision to draft him look brilliant. In 2010, Freeman threw 25 touchdown passes and just six interceptions.

But his play declined after that, there was talk that he didn’t get along with new coach Greg Schiano and his staff, and the Bucs cut Freeman during the 2013 season. Freeman signed with the Vikings and quickly became the starter in Minnesota, but he was a disaster and was benched after his first game.

Last year Freeman was out of the NFL after the Giants cut him following a brief period on their offseason roster. Now the Dolphins will give him another chance to show he belongs. This may be his last chance.

Here's some good news...and the latest episode in the Chip Kelly mental meltdown :

If Chip Kelly likes Dion Jordan, now is the time to get him

Posted by Michael David Smith on April 26, 2015, 6:37 AM EDT

x350-22-e1376405177427.jpg?w=219

In the 2013 NFL draft, the Dolphins loved Dion Jordan, and thought the Eagles loved him, too. Now the Dolphins would love to get rid of Jordan, and would love to have the Eagles be the ones to take him off their hands.

Jordan played for Eagles coach Chip Kelly at Oregon, so the Dolphins thought in 2013 that they’d have to move ahead of the Eagles in order to draft Jordan. And that’s what they did: The Eagles owned the fourth overall pick, so the Dolphins packaged their first-round pick (No. 12) and their-second round pick (No. 42) to move up and draft Jordan with the third overall pick.

Now that looks like a huge mistake. Jordan has been a major disappointment, and the Dolphins are sidestepping questions about whether they see any role for him on the team at all.

That has led to talk that the Dolphins could trade Jordan to the Eagles, but there’s just one problem: We really have no reason to believe that Kelly wants Jordan, other than the fact that Kelly seems to like his old Oregon players. Just because Kelly likes Oregon players who have been productive, like Kiko Alonso, that doesn’t mean he would like an Oregon player who has been a bust, like Jordan.

So if Kelly does like Jordan, the Dolphins would surely be happy to trade him to Philadelphia at a bargain price. But that’s a big “if.” All the talk about Kelly’s interest in Jordan seems to be based on assumptions, and we’ve learned this offseason that we should never assume we know what Chip Kelly will do.

And now for the bad news...well it could be seen as good news too...

Report: Dion Jordan to be suspended for the 2015 season

Posted by Mike Wilkening on April 28, 2015, 1:12 PM EDT

One of the top picks in the 2013 NFL Draft will miss the entire upcoming season.

Dolphins defensive end Dion Jordan, the No. 3 overall selection two years ago, will be suspended for the 2015 regular season after a positive substance-abuse test, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday.

According to Schefter, Jordan’s positive test stems from a diluted test sample, and he is not appealing the ban. The defensive end served a four-game suspension in 2014 for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

Furthermore, ESPN reports the latest positive test has scuttled a potential trade between the Dolphins and Eagles for Jordan, who played collegiately at Oregon under now-Philadelphia coach Chip Kelly.

The 25-year-old Jordan hasn’t had much of an impact in his first two NFL seasons, notching just three sacks in 26 regular season games. And now, he has suffered a significant setback.

For some veteran free agents, draft choices cast doubt on decisions

Posted by Darin Gantt on May 3, 2015, 10:21 AM EDT

When the days before the draft grow shorter, it’s a scary time for veteran free agents.

They have to weigh whether to take offers available before the draft, or run the risk of having those offers go away when teams find younger, perhaps better and certainly cheaper alternatives. It’s an expensive game of chicken, and often players will blink at the last minute.

The saying around the league is “get in where you fit in,” but with the 2015 NFL Draft in the books, a pair of veteran wideouts might be re-thinking their decisions.

Of course, Greg Jennings got a pretty lucrative deal from Miami, but both he and Tennessee’s Hakeem Nicks were promptly covered up by the end of the weekend.

When Jennings signed with the Dolphins, it seemed like good business (in addition to the two years and $8 million). Though they acquired Kenny Stills in trade to go with emerging Jarvis Landry, there seemed to still be a chance for him to have more of a role in the offense.

But when they used their first-rounder on Louisville’s DeVante Parker, Jennings became a rather expensive stable pony, a guy whose job will be to mentor young players moreso than catch flying things.

When Nicks picked the Titans, it wasn’t for the same kind of money or fanfare, but it at least looked like he had a chance to contribute behind Kendall Wright and Harry Douglas and Justin Hunter.

But then the Titans used a second-rounder on boom-or-bust Dorial Green-Beckham and a seventh on intriguing project Tre McBride, the depth chart became really crowded.

Nicks didn’t have the same kind of interest in the market as Jennings (who also visited the Saints, Panthers and Jaguars), but it became a lot harder for him to resurrect his career this weekend.

Now he might have to wait for the next crack at free agency to find a team willing to throw the ball to him, a chance that may come as soon as August.

Ryan Tannehill gets $21.5 million fully guaranteed at signing

Posted by Mike Florio on May 18, 2015, 4:50 PM EDT

cd0ymzcznguwzdbhnduynddiytjhm2yyzthlmtjjotqwyyznpwziyjuxm2i0yjbmy2eyzwvmmju3n2q0ztzhm2i0zgqx-e1430074875509.jpeg?w=222

More details are emerging in connection with the next contract signed by Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill. And the most important detail relates to the amount that is fully guaranteed at signing.

Per a league source, Tannehill receives $21.5 million fully guaranteed at signing.

Another $3.5 million becomes fully guaranteed in March 2016, and another $3.5 million becomes fully guaranteed in 2017. The rest of the guarantees ($16.5 million) become fully guaranteed in 2018.

As a practical matter, then, Tannehill will get $25 million fully guaranteed over the next two seasons — unless the Dolphins cut him before next March and let him walk away with $21.5 million over one year.

In all, it’s a four-year extension worth $77 million, which equates to $19.25 million per year in new money average. Which is a very good deal for a guy who has not yet emerged as a clear-cut, short-list franchise quarterback.
