I just got Rush in Rio in the mail yesterday

Rush in Rio is the only live DVD release that I didn't own. I don't care for Vapor Trails, and since that was the album they were then touring behind, I resisted for a long time. But I went ahead and finally ordered it, and it arrived yesterday.

I've seen many people on the forum say that it's their favorite of all of them, or the best...but it's been awhile since I've seen people talk about it much.

I haven't watched it yet, but I plan to, over the course of this weekend. So tell me- what is in store for me?

It's a great as a document. I found the backstory of the concert really interesting. Do you have the DVD with The Boys in Brazil documentary?

And the setlist is great.

Yes, the documentary is on mine.

I bought a used copy, but it's in perfect condition. It was just under $10, with shipping included.

Yes, the set list I'm interested in (except for the Vapor Trails tunes- but maybe this will be cause for me to reevaluate them somewhat)...I'm particularly interested in the Cygnus X-1 segment at the end. I went to a couple of shows on the Roll the Bones tour when they did a little piece of it, but that was at the very end of a medley, and it was literally maybe thirty seconds of it- just a tease! I want to see if it's any more than that (and I don't want anyone here to tell me before I see it)...

The tone of Neil's snare is a little annoying, but other than that it's a great show. Great crowd, great setlist, great energy. Geddy's voice is in perfect form, Alex has one of the best nights of his career, and Neil is just…Neil. It's my favorite live album.

Definitely the best, but on any given day I could top it with R30 as well. Two wonderful live performances.

The sheer energy of the band and the audience is unrivaled on most any live album I've listened to by anybody. Only Queen's Wembley and Zeppelin's reunion in 2007 come close. 50,000 crazyass Brazilians singing along to YYZ.

The setlist is wonderfully varied, too. This is the main reason I never really listen to ATWAS that much because of how short the show is and how limited the setlist is. There are some great cuts on there like all of the 2112 material, By-Tor, and In The End.

I think I'm going to listen to Rush in Rio right now :haz:

The 5.1 audio is unlistenable because they added the sound of the band with a fake delay that is distracting. The drums were poorly mic'd or mixed and you can't hear the toms much of the time. An exciting document with lots of energy but the sound and playing is better technically on R30 and Snakes live.

The crowd saves this DVD. if not for them this would a shelf-er. The sound, the quick cuts. Awful. Thanks to that energy though. it's a fun watch. The VT section drags though and i skip it.

I have a soft spot for Rush In Rio. It was my reintro to Rush. I love it. I think it contains the best version of Natural Science. The documentary is not only great but funny too.

If I wanted to introduce someone to Rush, I would give them either the documentary for RIR to watch before the concert. In my opinion, that would forever sell them on Rush.

To me, one of the funniest things Alex said was when they got off the elevator and the woman who was their escort (or whatever she was) greeted them and said "We've been waiting so long for you." And Alex said "well, we were just upstairs."

It doesn't sound funny in the telling. You have to watch the documentary to catch the humor.

An old and great joke. Similarly, if anyone at a restaurant asks you "Do you have reservations?" say, "yes we had a few but we came anyway.." :) :)

That's pure comedy gold, when Alex responds like that. Genius love it.

RIR is my favourite rush live dvd.

Such a great show. The crowd is absolutley insane!

Agreed. I am just nearing the end of the first set...fantastic show so far. Great to see all of the Brazilians going bonkers, jumping up and down, singing along to everything...(even YYZ :ebert: ).

I remember a friend of mine reviewing the RiR DVD at the time saying: "You watch it and then you realize that everything else you have seen and listened to in decades is worthless!"

At the time I could only agree. Then R30....

I have since finished watching it, and the performance really is excellent.

I may be giving the songs from Vapor Trails a bit more of a chance in the near future, as well. I've just never liked that album...but...

It sounds much better on RiR than it does on the album. I thought the same thing when I saw/heard the DVD but then when I went back to give the album a chance it still sucked. :D
