tx_rush
I wouldn't call myself a bird watcher or anything, but I do love watching birds, seeing what unique ones turn up in my neighborhood. In my backyard, the most common thing I see are mockingbirds, hummingbirds, wood peckers, cardinals, blue jays, finches and morning doves (as well as some tiny little brown ones, not very pretty not sure what they are). Mockingbirds are my favorite, as they sing so nicely. If im out in the woods, I run into a little more variety, scissortails, bluebirds (which are really striking), what I think are yellow warblers (people around here call them mexican quail), and while fishing, of course blue herons. I will occasionaly see a roadrunner, and never seen one, but at night, I hear whippoorwills. What kinds of cool birds are in your neighborhood? http://www.geddies-store.com/articles/images_for_articles/yellow-rump-warbler.jpg warbler http://www.coastandcactus.com/img/s4/v65/p1377679766-3.jpg scissor tail http://www.geddies-store.com/articles/images_for_articles/whippoorwill.jpg whippoorwill (never seen em, they are nocturnal and are very well camoflauged)
Lost In Xanadu
Funny you made this thread... more fuel to our similarities :) Just a few months ago, I got a "Birds of WI and MN" book on Amazon...http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61Z39JBPS0L.jpg Had this guy in our tree and was curious to see what it was:http://urbanhawks.blogs.com/photos/uncategorized/11506b_1.jpg Also found a dead mouse or rabbit on our roof this fall, I assume he/she was up there feasting. Nothing left but skin and a few guts. I also love watching the purple martins eat bugs (they are fast as all hell):http://www.masondixonpark.net/PurpleMartin.jpg We also get our share of blue/yellow/red finches, cardinals, robins and blue jays.

RushCanuck
Right now it's winter so there aren't many birds around. There's no leaves on the trees so you can see all the nests, some of them quite fancy. We put out bird seed when it's not winter and cardinals, blue jays and yellow birds (finches?) drop by amongst others. They are beautiful creatures to watch. We also have a water pond with a small waterfall over some rocks and many birds take a quick bath in the waterfall. There are fish in the pond and one day a big heron swooped down looking for a meal. It was amazing. We live in a neighborhood with mature trees, so I love hearing them start chirping about an hour before daylight when they are local. I love birds.

jamie
I'm so glad you made this thread, I love birds so much. My family has a bird feeder right outside a window in our living room so the birds that nest on my neighbor's roof constantly use it. There's mostly finches that use it but sometimes we get doves. They usually look similar to thesehttp://tsuru-bird.net/finches/finch_purple_female_spring_california_1a.jpghttp://www.goats4h.com/birds/uploaded_images/DSC09801-727135.JPGhttp://www.duncraft.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/cowbird2.jpghttp://californiaoutdoors.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/mourning-dove_usfws1.jpg

Now they are in my backyard every day. Lost In Xanadu
Ones I hate are those sparrows. We had a birdhouse in the backyard (not sure which kid of bird was in it) but I came out one day and all the eggs were on the ground. Little bastard sparrows kicked them out and took over. http://www.fws.gov/nevada/nv_species/urban_wildlife/bird_house.htm

tx_rush
In about February, the first birds that get real active are the robins. I really dont like them very much, they are just boring IMO....however, in February, the robins are really fat, like some are the size of a small chicken. I have a goal to get a good picture of one, will try and post it

They carry a lot of disease, my dog used to have pups and they would eat the food and get em sick. My dad used to pay me a quarter for everyone I could pop with my Red Ryder bb gun. I have notches all up and down the stock :)
