What are your top 3 bands for lyrics; primarily.

Mine would be

1. joy division. Boggles the mind that Ian curtis wrote these beautifull and insightful lyrics, before his untimely death at 23.

Words that are grandiose and personal, esoteric but yet understood, well they mean a lot to me. Cant think of another band that has had such an impact on music, yet are so underrated and unkown. Ian Curis's lyrics cut to the bone or chase, so fatalstic but eloquently put; it puts up a convincing case for 'being'.

Heart and soul

Instincts that can still betray us,

A journey that leads to the sun,

Soulless and bent on destruction,

A struggle between right and wrong.

You take my place in the showdown,

I'll observe with a pitiful eye,

I'd humbly ask for forgiveness,

A request well beyond you and I.

Heart and soul, one will burn.

Heart and soul, one will burn.

An abyss that laughs at creation,

A circus complete with all fools,

Foundations that lasted the ages,

Then ripped apart at their roots.

Beyond all this good is the terror,

The grip of a mercenary hand,

When savagery turns all good reason,

There's no turning back, no last stand.

Heart and soul, one will burn.

Heart and soul, one will burn.

Existence well what does it matter?

I exist on the best terms I can.

The past is now part of my future,

The present is well out of hand.

The present is well out of hand.

Heart and soul, one will burn.

Heart and soul, one will burn.

One will burn, one will burn.

Heart and soul, one will burn.

2. Meat puppets. Oh what abstract joy these guys bring. Skewed, etheral blobby, wonderful words. Happiness, otherworldy, so many great words, hard to choose the best example really. These guys take me elsewhere and bring me back better for it.

http://i.ytimg.com/vi/4LDAfrXeOhk/0.jpghttp://www.lyricsmania.com/images/play2.pngLyrics to Island Someday on the moonwalk everything was right

bounced on the onfloat history of life

somewhere in the afterglow peeling it fell

and it's good to see the happiness far

You're the grass

you're the trees

you're the thing that makes the wind

you're the roots of the sky

you're an island

you never move

you never sleep

you're the thought I cannot keep

you're a denessen of the deep

you're and island

Always in the neverglades

purple wings in five picture

golden eyes and I

somewhere in the afterglow peeling it fell

where it's coming from no one can ever tell

You're the grass

you're the trees

you're the thing that makes the wind

you're the roots of the sky

you're an island

you never move

you never sleep

you're the thought I cannot keep

you're a denessen of the deep

you're and island

Somewhere on the earth now everything is cool

drinking from the afterflow splash becomes a pool

somewhere in the afterglow peeling it fell

where it's coming from no one can ever tell

You're the grass

you're the trees

you're the thing that makes the wind

you're the roots of the sky

you're an island

you never move

you never sleep

you're the thought I cannot keep

you're a denessen of the deep

you're and island

you never move

you never sleep

you're the thought I cannot keep

you're a denessen of the deep

you're and island

You're the moon

you're the glass

down stone the donkeys ass

up above the heavens laugh

you're an island

3 New model army. These guys know the score. Political to the core, less so in recent years, they can get a bit righteous(one of the reason snakes and arrows was a turn off) Never the less, their lyrics are rather poignant to me. Very valued, justin is a great poet, for sure.

Our history speaks in thunder from a thousand village halls

In blood and sweat and sacrifice, in honouring every call

So the forces gathered against the thorn a-piercing in their side

A brave new world is beckoning so the olden world must die.

In the offices of the city, at all the tables of oak and power

The snares are laid and baited for the approaching of the hour

A hundred justifications and the presses are ready to roll

The gateways to the nation they are firmly under control

Chorus:

On, on, on, cried the leaders at the back

We went galloping down the blackened hills

And into the gaping trap

The bridges are burnt behind us and there's waiting guns ahead

Into the valley of death rode the brave hundreds

We called for some assistance from the friends that we had known

But this is the 1980s and we were on our own

We never felt like heroes or martyrs to a cause

Just battle-weary soldiers in a bloody civil war

The massacre now is over and the order new enshrined

While a quarter of the nation are abandoned far behind

Their leaders offer the clich?words, so righteous in defeat

But no one needs morality when there isn't enough to eat

The unity bond is broken and the loyalty songs are fake

I'll screw my only brother for even a glimpse at a piece of the cake

We only cry in private here behind the shuttered glass

When we think of the charge of this brigade, the severing of the past

Chorus:

On, on, on, cried the leaders at the back

We went galloping down the blackened hills

And into the gaping trap

The bridges are burnt behind us and there's waiting guns ahead

Into the valley of death rode the brave hundreds

congratulations, we're the two people on TRF who have heard a meat puppets record

I wouldn't be so sure; if you were half conscious in the '80s you've heard the Meat Puppets.
