Should posts in the spam thread be counted in post count totals?

  1. 1. Should posts in the spam threads be counted in post count totals and toward achieving levels?

Honestly, post counts can be a tricky stat by which to judge a member's quality, if that is what you use it for. If you want only quality posts to count towards a post count, how do you determine what is quality or not? Is it by the thread you are posting it in? Is it automatically a crappy post that should not count just because it is in the Spam thread? Is it automatically a quality post just because it was made in SOCN? Why is posting thousands of verbs better than posting thousands of random thoughts in a spam thread? Granted, I've seen some real junk in the spam thread, especially by the King Spammer. But I've also seen conversations, and stream of consciousness posts, in the same thread, also by the King Spammer.

Aside from just the raw number of the post count, I suppose that the post count title (assuming you don't have a custom member title) and icon are something that we feel should actually be earned. I know that hopes were high that one member would be the first to break 50,000 posts, and thus earn the new Double Agent icon. But then another member came in and spammed all over Grand Designs over a weekend and beat him to it. That was too bad.

I suppose there could be a way to keep spam posts from counting, but is there the demand for it?

Definitely not. A post count and member title should be something earned, and by earned I don't mean posting nonstop spam.

If you weren't rewarded with member titles then I don't think it would matter, but since they exist here I think the quality of your posting matters.

Member titles aren't really that big of a deal, honestly. I think they should be removed.

Always A Bridesmaid... :wtf:

The title he is referring to is simply based on post count "Solar Federalist, Oracle, Vapor Trails... etc

WTF does "Always a bridesmaid" mean in your case?

Funny story. Someone was asking for a member title and I was telling him that you have to be given one. Somewhere in my explanation I said something like I probably wouldn't get one. I'm always a bridesmaid...

OK, it wasn't that funny of a story.

I was just kidding anyway. Once a poster gets over a couple hundred posts, I feel they're here for a reason other than trying to sell something or troll. Anything over that I don't take much notice of.

I think the Spam threads get too much bad press. There's a misconception that it's all just about about bumping post count. Sure, some people do (they know who they are...and so do you), but they're a minority. Myself, and most others, use the Spam threads for socialising and having random conversations.

I've made lots of friends in the Spam threads, and lots of great memories. I'm not happy at the idea that someone will decide that all that was "meaningless post-whoring" and that it doesn't count.

Had to get that off my chest

Then why post in the SPAM thread at all if you know that is the connotation it has here (and you are correct - most people that don't post in there think it's meaningless post whoring...)?

Why not exchange posts with these people in real threads? Or use PM? Or get in Chat?

But what business is it of ours why people post in the Spam thread, or what they post in it? So far, I don't really hear anyone complaining about being labeled a spammer. And the only real rules about it are to keep the Spam in the Spam thread. But no one has said to keep the non-Spam out of the Spam thread. Anything goes.

I do post in "real" threads too. I continue posting in TOST because the people who post there regularly are friendly and I have fun with them.

Wait, did you guys derail the Spam thread with meaningful posts? Shame on you ALL!!!

I guess I can say that I do agree that the one thing that is bad about spam posts counting is that they do strip all the meaning away from the post count icons. What might take someone a few months, or even a few years to get with meaningful posting, such as becoming a Solar Federalist (something I was proud to do) can be done by someone else over a weekend who has nothing better to do than post a nonsensical minimum number of characters over and over and over again. Has someone like that really "assumed control?" Really?

I know - I have chatted with your quite a bit, and I enjoy our interaction. I was not saying "don't post in there" - I was asking why you post in there if you know the connotation it has. I guess I should have expanded the question to include "or do you not care" and I guess you answered that.

I do like the SPAM threads, they keep all the meaningless stuff from taking over other, more subject oriented, threads.

One followup question though.... if it is simply for fun, would NOT counting the posts in there stop people from using them? My guess is those that truly enjoy the interactions would still use them - and the post whores would start cramming SPAM all over the place.

You'd be up shit creek if someone was judging quality of posts..

I could see that happening. If, for instance, nothing in GD counted towards post count, then I'd imagine you could expect a sudden rise in Spam elsewhere.

I agree with what Sheldon said a few posts back. The problem with TOST comes when you get pages and pages of absolute nothing. That's also where it gets it's bad reputation.

I never post in them...unless this counts as a spam thread...

This season - the N.O. Saints thread has been designated as SPAM

The Packers thread is SPAM every year though! :joker:

We'll see who's laughing next week!

Exactly,

BTW, who really gives a damn? We post where we fell the most comfortable and with those who usually visit that specific thread.

What about those who start a thread just to do it? I mean, look at all of the threads in the Rush section. It's just unbelievable!
