The David Bowie Thread

I have a DVD of a show he did at Hammersmith Odeon in '73, and used to have another, of a show during the Heroes tour, from Germany, 1978. I think I lost that one, though.

I'm not a big fan of all of the different phases of his music career, but there's a lot of it that I like very much.

Genius is an apt description...he is truly an innovator.

I'm starting The David Bowie Thread with this:

Love this clip. Not to mention I love how David Bowie has Klaus Nomi in his entourage. Such an obscure reference.

Have you ever heard a song that just speaks to you on so many levels that it seems almost biographical?

"Conversation Piece" by David Bowie is that song for me.

Nothing expresses that loneliness and social awkwardness that I feel each and every day as I live, move and have my being, quite like this song.

I took this walk to ease my mind.

To find out what's gnawing at me.

Wouldn't think, to look at me.

That I've spent a lot of time in education.

It all seems so long ago.

I'm a thinker, not a talker

I've no one to talk to, anyway.

I can't see the road

For the rain in my eyes.

I live above the grocers store,

Owned by an Austrian.

He often calls me down to eat.

And he jokes about his broken English

Tries to be a friend to me.

But for all my years of reading conversation,

I stand without a word to say.

I can't see the bridge

For the rain in my eyes

Ahhh-huh, h...uh, huh

And the world is full of life

Full of folk who don't know me.

And they walk in twos or threes or more.

While the light that shines above the grocer's store

Investigates my face so rudelyt

And my essays lying scattered on the floor

Fulfill their needs just by being there.

And my hands shake, my head hurts

My voice sticks inside my throat

I'm invisible and dumb

No one will recall me

And I can't see the water through the tears in my eyes.

I am not a huge Bowie fan, but I was in Chicago and went to the "David Bowie Is: exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Very cool exhibition, both the display and the way they handled the audio.

My favourite era from Bowie is the trilogy of albums he recorded between 1977-1979,and is known as the Berlin Trilogy! Produced by Brian Eno, Low-Heroes-Lodger are exceptionally good works, and full of new wave/ambient sounds, and have Eno's class all over them!
