When stereo became available I'm sure most people were quick to throw out their old mono records. It was probably marketed "Stereo - the way it was meant to be heard". Then the record companies sold as much they could until a point where they had to come up with something new.

The mono version of Pepper is utterly beautiful. Adore that one.

I have only heard it in stereo!

What I like about stereo is the sense of space it gives you. I know that mixing in mono is more difficult because all the instruments fight for the same space. If done right you probably wouldn't notice, but todays music will sound even worse in mono I think.

 

But then again, this is Beatles so I couldn't care less ;)
