Quintessential Rush Song?

I would say TSOR, it's got a little bit of everything: complexity, classic Neil lyrics, blending of styles, pretty high singing etc..

They're a band known for tweaking their sound, sometimes drastically, every couple of years for the past 40. That makes it hard to pick one song as "definitive".

Tom Sawyer encompasses pretty much everything they did up to that point.

I guess I'd also nominate Natural Science, but that's about it.

When someone is curious about Rush, and asks what material that is not TS or Limelight sounds like, I generally get started on a lengthy discussion. They had several different periods. I like where their sound has led them to right now, and am curious what a new album would sound like.

I don't think Rush can be defined by one song. They change too much for that.

Heavens no! As much as I love the song, it doesn't define them.

I'm almost tempted to say La Villa, even though it is an instrumental. It is timeless. And it Is :rush: .

 I just figured that would be the opposite of defining them. Natural Science for me kind of intermingles much of their styles if you ask me. Cerebral but it also rocks....

Can't pick just one.

Through the years:

(70's hard rock and prog themes)

By-Tor

2112

Xanadu

Natural Science

(80's mainstream hard rock and synth, but with their progressive nature intact)

Tom Sawyer

Subdivisions

Red Sector A

(90's "back to basics" crushing hard rock with plenty of musical chops)

Stick It Out

Test For Echo

(post-hiatus)

Earthshine

Far Cry

Headlong Flight

To me those seem to give a taste of everything Rush is/was in their time periods.

You have learned much young padawan. Not bad. Really Working Man has to be in there, but I have no real love for the first album so I left it off.

Xanadu. It's their eternal anthem.

That would be true if Headlong Flight were never written.

Headlong Flight—now that is truly an anthem!!!

PS—Hemispheres 3.5 stars out of 5

You won't get any disagreement from me. I think it's a great song. Best one off of CA, which only has a couple of other decent songs on it as it is. Were you around when Xanadu was being played live with the double-necks?

I was a wee lad. However, if I were in the audience on the Kings tour I would have lost my mind. If you had that pleasure I'm envious.

AFTK's was my first album but I didn't get a chance to see them in concert until Moving Pictures. But they did play Xanadu with the double-necks on that tour as well. It was awesome to say the least. Definite highlight of the concert.
