Vic Fangio, barring any contractual issues, will be the Bears' new defensive coordinator:

The Chicago Bears continued to rapidly assemble John Fox's coaching staff on Tuesday, agreeing in principle to a deal that would make Vic Fangio the team's defensive coordinator, a source confirmed.

Bears general manager Ryan Pace on Monday said the club hadn't yet offered Fangio a contract, but by Tuesday morning the club was working with the coach's representatives to put the finishing touches on a deal.

Fangio interviewed with the Bears on Saturday, but he met Sunday with the Washington Redskins for a second interview.

Fangio's hiring had been earlier reported by CBS Sports.

Fangio had been released from his contract with the San Francisco 49ers after the team promoted Jim Tomsula to head coach. Fangio had hoped to land the 49ers' head coaching job, and reportedly made his intentions known he did not want to stay in any other capacity.

During Fangio's last four years as defensive coordinator of the 49ers, the club ranked in the top 10 in points and yards. In Fangio's first three seasons in San Francisco (2011-13), the 49ers were the only team in the NFL to finish in the top five in points allowed (16.1 points per game), run defense (89.1-yard average), rushing average (3.7), first downs allowed (835), opponent quarterback rating (76), yards allowed (306.5 yards per game), plays for gains of 20-plus yards (147), takeaways (93) and third-down defense (34.1 percent conversion rate).

San Francisco's defense in 2014 was hit hard by injuries, but Fangio led the unit to a No. 5 overall ranking as the defense ranked No. 10 in the league in points allowed (21.2 points per game).

Fangio, 56, joins the Bears with 28 years of NFL coaching experience, including 15 as a coordinator. He takes over for Mel Tucker, who presided over a Bears defense that ranked 30th overall in each of the past two seasons and 31st in 2014 and 30th in 2013 in points allowed.

The hiring caught the attention of offensive lineman Kyle Long, who tweeted out his approval.

This might turn out to be pretty good, but then again just about anything will be better than having Mel Sucker behind the wheel.

Only a small part of the problem though. If Pace knows what he's doing (the hiring of Fox indicates he does) he'll spend most of this year's draft on defense picks.

Bears talking with Colorado cornerback Greg Henderson: http://dawindycity.c...greg-henderson/

With the Senior Bowl taking place in Mobile, Alabama this week, this is typically the time when teams begin to have preliminary interest in draft prospects. Chicago Bears’ general manager Ryan Pace is in Alabama this week along with the Bears’ scouting department as the team scouts potential draft selections. One potential draft selection that the Bears have met with this week is Colorado cornerback Greg Henderson.

With their coaching staff now in place, Chicago Bears’ general manager Ryan Pace and head coach John Fox will now turn their focus to improving the Bears’ roster.

Fox’s defensive coordinator with the Bears is former San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Fangio runs a 3-4 defensive scheme and the Bears will be looking for players this off-season that fit the 3-4 scheme.

An under the radar candidate for the Bears may be Colorado cornerback Greg Henderson. Henderson is not a top prospect for the 2015 NFL Draft but that did not prevent the Bears from meeting with the cornerback.Fangio’s 3-4 defense requires cornerbacks to operate with man-to-man coverage as opposed to the zone-coverage that the Bears’ cornerbacks have grown accustom to. The Bears will need to find cornerbacks this off-season that are comfortable with man-to-man coverage.

Henderson is not the draft prospect that would replace veteran cornerback Tim Jennings. Henderson, if drafted, projects as a late-round draft pick. The issues with Henderson result from a lack of instincts as the cornerback failed to secure an interception during his senior season with Colorado and allowed eight touchdown passes.

One NFC East scout told NFL.com that Henderson is not a “draftable talent”.

“I don’t see a draftable talent. He’s got some quickness, but I don’t see coverage traits, instincts or toughness cornerbacks need to have.”

If anything, Henderson appears to be a candidate to be an undrafted free agent signing for the Bears.

And the story least likely to have an effect on the 2015 season goes to...
