Cygnus 2112
Portnoy or Mangini? Who's better for DT? Edited July 21, 2014 by Cygnus 2112
Xanadoood
Mangini is the more advanced technical drummer, from what I've read .
Mr. Not
As of right now: Portnoy. It's still too early to tell. Mangini's body of work is so small in comparison to Portnoy's. In ADToE it seemed like DT hadn't even changed really, but in the new self titled there's the infamous snare sound which I can now admit isn't something I'll be getting used to. When it comes to skill, Mangini's definitely superior, but just comparing drum solos I don't like any of what Mangini does as much as Portnoy did. It's a shame too that I'm going with Portnoy on this one, because Portnoy is a total douchebag while Mangini seems like a decent guy.
Rod in Toronto
Interesting way of asking a question. "Who´s better for DT" is a better question than "who´s the best drummer", IMO. And I voted for Portnoy. Having seen DT 10 times now, 6 with Portnoy and 4 with Mangini, I think they lost A LOT of spontaneity and stage presence live with Portnoy leaving. They also left behind the rotating setlists, which was a huge plus for me when he was in the band. Mangini´s snare sound n DT12 does not help AT ALL, as pointed out by Mr. IsNot.
H. P. L.
Before opening the thread, I was sure, for some unkwnown reason, it was Mike Oldfield vs Mike Rutherford. My bad!!I don't know them so I can't speak.
Del_Duio
Weird as this is going to sound, I think Mangini is far superior on a technical level (which is something in itself considering how godlike Portnoy's skills already are) but I much prefer Portnoy's playing and ideas with DT's music. And even if I don't agree with how MP sometimes overplays his fills, his beats and timing are just so GREAT I can't really vote against him. EDIT: Great point about the snare drum sound!! At least Portnoy knows how to mic a kit :D Edited July 21, 2014 by Del_Duio
Rod in Toronto
And for the record, I met Portnoy twice and Mangini once. Portnoy seems to have a blast when meeting fans, while Mangini seems rather uncomfortable. This guy at the meet & greet had drumsticks he picked up from Mangini when he played in his hometown 10 years before with Steve Vai, and took him to sign, hoping he´d be at least curious about it. He just shrugged and said "ok". I took two CDs from friends of mine for them at this meet & greet, and gave one to MAngini and one to PEtrucci, but they just left them at the signing table! PolarizeMe
I'm gonna have to go with Portnoy with this one...I unfortunately have never seen DT live with Portnoy nor did I become a DT fan when he was still in the band, but I can tell from listening through the bulk of their discography studio and live, I enjoy his way of playing and musicality more. IMO, his drumming had the pocket and the power that was unmistakably right for the band's direction even though I'm a bit less fond of the last two albums with him in the band. As pointed out by someone earlier, Portnoy comes across as a total wanker but I try not to regard his subjective (and for the most part, one sided) opinions and social media inclined personality into the equation of what I think of him in the band, because on the other hand he also comes across as a fan friendly person and he's got a great and energized stage presence that I like. As for Mangini, well it's a bit unfair considering he's only got 2 albums with DT under his belt. For what DT's got going for them, he fills the role very well. He is the more technical and skilled of the two, and has a reputation for being a nice guy. However, his stage presence is a bit robotic...IDK if it's because of the way he had his kit set up (which BTW, while I find cool at times, I still ask myself "What in the f**k were you thinking?" in regards to his kit) but I think it seems to deter his stage presence that he would have otherwise. And as some have pointed out, the dreadful DT12 snare sound that is instantly off putting and rivals that of the I&W triggered snare drum Ironically, I thought he was awesomely energetic during his audition and his kit looked and sounded great in the audition as well. Nevertheless, there is one thing Mangini can do better than Portnoy and it's the ability to go express virtually any facial expressions within seconds...

bluefox4000
Right Now i prefer Mangini cause he's a breath of fresh air to me. The last two records with Portnoy i hated cause he was way to present with the metal cookie monster growl. So i was glad he left. But you can't take away what he did in DT and his connection with the fans was great. I actually LOVED the 2 albums with Magini. They seemed to have regained their melodic sense which is great. I'll always respect Portnoy. I just didn't like how he closed in on the last to albums. And if you've seen the Black Holes documentary it's pretty apparent that was true. PolarizeMe
Well looks like Portnoy's fuming over a fan who wore a post-Portnoy DT shirt at a signing. I think that was uncalled for. bluefox4000
I'm glad he deleted that cause that's the kind of thing that makes me not like Portnoy. "Oh i'm not in the group anymore so please don't acknowledge they exist." Dude please get over yourself. DT moved on and so should you.
