Cygnus 2112
This is from Tuesday night. There are currently 23 fires burning in our fire district. And we are hitting record highs with temperatures still rising. This is starting to get scary..

EagleMoon
How do you post a pic from smart phone? You have to upload it to a site like Photobucket just like you do on your computer, and attach the link.
x1yyz
How do you post a pic from smart phone? You need to put the photo up somewhere online (a lot of people here use a free Photobucket account), then link to where you've put it. Sadly you cannot directly imbed a photo into a post. goose
A picture of last week's flash flood. The whole street was a river of mud. We really lucked out t my place and nothing got in the house. Just little cosmetic damage that thirty hours with a shovel took care of in short order. Better than new now! Lots of neighbors not so lucky...or this guy... http://carsonvalleytimes.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/floodmain.jpg ...or these folks... http://www.ktvn.com/story/26077179/many-minden-residents-doing-major-cleanup-after-weekend-flooding Edited July 28, 2014 by goose

And here I thought the East side of the Sierras was more dry than the West (which is parched).

Yeah. The only thing you have to worry about are the fishermen, saying you "scare the fish". So it is best to stay in the middle. The Analog Grownup
A question for all of you americans and canadiens: What is the view of foreign architecture? I sense a lot of romanticism towards the whole americana thing from where I am, but wondered if there is something likewise going on from north america? :)

That looks totally unbelieveable to me. It's all bricks here! Not being judgemental about it, anyway. I have a friend in Harvard and she lives in a wooden old house and says it's the best.

Whenever I see the Extreme Makeover Home Edition (or whatever it's called) I'm just amazed at how everything is built and unfortunately not in a positive way. Those houses will only last one storm I think. However the indoor climate must be wonderful because all the wood allows the house to "breathe". In Denmark we build everything with bricks and cement and the only houses made of wood are allotments and cottages like these: http://b.bimg.dk/node-images/378/5/620x/5378981-kolonihave.jpg http://www.novasol.dk/site/nov/pictures/header-958x270/destination/208/denmark-coast.jpg But! I haven't lived or ever been to an american house, so I really don't know what I'm talking about :P

So many houses here are made of wood simply because it is so plentiful in North America. The insides are typically lined with drywall/Sheetrock for fire resistance, and the insides of the exterior walls insulated for temperature moderation. When done right they are very well-built! In places like California we also have strict earthquake building codes so that buildings will withstand the ground moving. While a lot of our wood-framed buildings are covered in wood, many are covered in stucco. The wood buildings are a regional thing as well. In damp/humid locations like Florida and Central America you see a lot more stone & concrete buildings. Many areas (big Eastern US & Canadian cities come to mind) have a lot of brick buildings, but here we can't use unreinforced brick because it would tumble down in a quake. Commercial buildings are usually built of steel and concrete.

I sense a lot of romanticism towards the whole americana thing from where I am, but wondered if there is something likewise going on from north america? :) I live in a city full of Victorian buildings, so I can say we love foreign architecture here! There definitely is a romanticism towards cute americana stuff—little bungalows with white pickets fences, etc.--but that may be more of a small town thing. From my experience (and I haven't seen a whole lot of the US/Canada, so this may not apply everywhere) is that North Americans love their tract housing. "Sprawling on the fringes of the city In geometric order An insulated border ... Detached and subdivided In the mass production zone." Cookie-cutter houses sprawling out pretty much everywhere. No charm at all. Blah.
x1yyz
Wow, you people have beautiful houses & yards! I don't seem to have any photos of our place, at least not post-renovation (it was in crappy shape when we bought it, so I don't want to post photos of construction). But here is our view, looking at downtown San Francisco and the Oakland hills in the distance: http://i341.photobucket.com/albums/o371/x1yyz/IMG_8081_zps81345bb5.jpg Here's the same view as of this morning (the trees have been trimmed since the last photo). This is typical for San Francisco in the summer. The grass is dormant. The mountains are the Sierra Nevada, and just to my right you can see the ski runs of Heavenly Valley Ski Resort. Where I live you can golf and ski on the same day. :) And fish for trout!! :D
