Talk about your favorite artist or art genre and post some sample pix!

Probably my very favorite art genre is surrealism, and this dude is one of my very favorites, creating some of the most bizarre surrealistic landscapes and creatures I've ever seen. Roberto Sebastian Antonio Matta Echaurren (better known as Roberto Matta, and better known still simply as "Matta") was from Chile (but was in France during the heart of the surrealistic movement) and lived from 1911 to 2002, painting most of his life. I actually think he got better as he got older, and was still painting high quality art up until his death at age 91. An amazing amount of his work can be found here: Matta Art Website

Here are some samples. I know this stuff might be somewhat weird or REALLY weird for some unsure.gif , but I love it wub.gif !:

another favorite surrealist artist was yves tanguy (1900-1955) - an american born in paris who lived in america, but also spent some years in france during the heart of the surrealist movment. tanguy was somewhat of a one-trick pony, but it was really quite a trick - he painted these generic and empty colorful landscapes populated with a particular kind of shape in the foreground giving his paintings a lot of depth - much of his work is very similar, but it's also startlingly unique and utterly strange. here's some samples:

much better known was spain's joan miro (a man, despite the name) - i was fortunate enough to see a huge exhibition of his at MOMA in new york a few years back - he's probably my very favorite artist - lived 1893-1983 and his work is very distinctive and recognizable - here are some of his:

thanks, dweez! trink39.gif

hopefully others will join in too - doesn't have to be surrealist art by any means - that's just my favorite - any type is welcome, and i like a lot of vastly different art genres as well, or even just comment and/or talk about art...

peace,

hmmmm, well, i guess people aren't jumping on the favorite artist bandwagon, but no matter. hopefully what i've posted will be of some aesthetic interest to some regardless.

another favorite art genre for me is late 60's psychedelic concert posters, which while in one sense are just advertisements for then upcoming shows, became, as you can see, a serious art form in itself, even if it's never been taken as seriously as it deserves to be by the art world in general. even so, this form of art was very influential in terms of pop art in the 60's up through today. the major well known artists from this era were the san francisco artists rick griffin, stanley mouse, anton kelly, victor moscoso and wes wilson, but there were many more, and england had their hapshash & the coloured coat (michael english and nigel weymouth) who also produced some amazing work including the first pink floyd one below. the rest are various san francisco era shows from the late 60's:

This is a kewl thread, Goob. I never really noticed the surreal before, and I am a bit drawn to it. Its like a dream. Kind of bottomless, and a bit interesting. I am more into scultpures, and clean lines, but his definately has my attention. new_thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

I love Alphonse Mucha - very influential Czech art nouveau poster artist (1860-1939):

Wonderful thread, rushgoober.

Painted art was not made a part of my education, unfortunately. I have no idea what modernism, impressionism, abstract, and all these other trends mean. I find I can't appreciate the beauty of painted art on a deeper level than visual appeal. Like listening to jazz, I don't know which details to pay attention to, and it's like I'm not getting the full experience. Some day, hopefully, this lapse will be corrected.

Keep adding stuff here. trink39.gif

One of my favourites is Philippe Druillet, who's technically a comic book artist, but at this point it's so much more than just comic books. His style is somewhat close to the Surrealism you posted on the first page, and in a way it's close to your psychedelic posters as well.

Here are some (text, if any, is in French, but it doesn't mean much anyway)

maxfield parrish (1870-1966) was a hugely popular and very successful american artist/illustrator - don't be surprised if you recognize some of his work. no one could paint light like he could:

I don't love everything that this French artist, William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) did, but I love some of it. He painted VERY realistically, and was able to capture innocence and emotion really beautifully. The first painting here I saw at the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal several years ago and I was stunned by it, enough so that I eventually called them and ordered a print that we have framed at the goob house:

I went to a friend's artist friends wacko.gif this weekend.

She is hugely talented and just started a couple years ago. I don't have any photos yet, but will get some.

She works in various medium and has some really cool stuff. One of my faves was her abstract with collage and painting on silk. If I had a way to get out to her place I could work on stuff out there with her. icon_alienjig.gif Meanwhile, she just gave me some great ideas and tips icon_alienjig.gif icon_alienjig.gif

You know it's good art when you can stare at it and ponder for hours wink.gif

One of my new favorite artists, Kurt Halsey. His work is very simplistic but it draws out the emotion, well in me anyway.
