PONO

I am interested in what people think about Neil Young's Pono music player. They used crowd funding to raise money - goal was $800K and they actually raised over $6.2 million. I was one of those "investors". You can read about it in the link below - the link function doesn't work for me so you may have to copy and paste. I am not a "tech guy", but the idea of hearing music as it was created, appeals to me in this age of mp3 files.

It's a FLAC player with proprietary hardware. An audiophile iPod essentially. It was supposed to be a new digital format so I'm a little disappointed that it's using an existing codec for the files. It was proposed as a new digital lossless format. Still curious.

I bet they're hoping a lot of people misread it. That would drive up sales big time. :LMAO:

The recording industry loves it. Albums are up to $25.

One day - and I hope I'm alive to see this - I want to be able to buy a non-proprietary lossless audio media player which has the ability for me to switch out different components (ie, storage options, screens, outer shells, etc.). Google is doing this with a new smartphone, I don't see why we can't do it with media players. Besides, we have the tech no that lossless audio reproduction is easy on a mobile platform, why are people still supporting lossy encoding?

Data size mostly. FLAC and even Apple Lossless codec's data footprint is about half that of full res when talking about 44.1 kHz/16 bit audio which is CD quality.

MP3 is still the absolute worst. Give me wma or AAC any day.
