Even though not a huge fan, G&R Appetite For Destruction would have to be mentioned...

The Band: Music from Big Pink

Crosby, Stills, and Nash

Dave Mason: Alone Together

Graham Nash: Songs for Beginners

Iron & Wine: The Creek Drank the Cradle

Jackson Browne: Saturate Before Using

Led Zeppelin I

Joe Cocker: With a Little Help...

The Velvet Underground & Nico

Ron Wood: I've Got My Own Album to Do

Tom Waits: Closing Time

It's not, but I always think of Astral Weeks as Van's debut...

And what about All Things Must Pass? Do we consider that Harrison's real debut? Because, if so, then that's easily my number one, no question.

So many, but the one that has always stood out to me, in a sense that a new/young/no-previous-accomplishments band has no right to sound this good -- this "we're the biggest, baddest asses around and we're here to announce ourselves" good -- is Van Halen's first, and outside of Fair Warning, I'm not even a huge fan. I remember well the 1st summer that album was out; if you listened to FM rock stations, you couldn't get away from Runnin', Eruption/You Really Got Me, and Jamie's Crying. I guess a better "commercial success" argument could be made for Boston's first (maybe the most successful debut album ever I'd guess), but that didn't introduce a whole new sub-genre within rock like Van Halen's did. Love them or not, Van Halen (esp Eddie's playing) was a new thing in rock. That album kicked down the door hard. They just sounded way better than any group of (previous) nobodies had a right to.

Also, since I didn't see it mentioned, I'll add Big Country's The Crossing to the mix. Great album, not just a great debut. In fact, that would be a good candidate for a thread titled "Which debut albums turned out to be the band's best album?"

here's a topic: AMAZING second albums

Black Sabbath - Paranoid

Led Zeppelin - II

Nirvana - Nevermind

Iron Maiden - Killers

Def Leppard - High N Dry

Guns N Roses - Use Your Illusion I & II

Ozzy - Diary of a Madman (if you accept that it was supposed to be a band called The Blizzard of Oz)

Just completely off the top of my head
