A telescope night

Be patient! Soon Saturn and some cool galaxies and nebula will be visible in the winter sky! For now I am kinda stuck on the moon until November. Pics didn't come out as well as I hoped - took about 40 with diff. lenses and 34 were horribly blurred (high mag ones particularly):

It was pretty much a full moon tonight, but the slice out at the bottom is just the corner of the eyepiece - remember, I am physically holding a digital camera up to the lense - NOT the right way to do it tongue.gif

Medium Magnification - The high mag ones just don't take pics well... at least not the way I am doing it sad.gif

Not bad pics RR. My parents ha d a pretty decent telescope that I used a few times. Once I am very sure, I was able to see Uranus (No joke here tongue.gif). I used time/space atlas type thing to verify that it was indeed Uranus and not another planet or star. It was very cool, bluish with some white streaks across it, or was it the other way around? I dunno, but it was very cool. I couldnt find it again after that night, oh well.

Uranus is very difficult to see, but yes that would describe it.

Whose-anus? Poor Uranus, the butt of so many jokes. Always getting a bum rap! It must feel like it's at the bottom of the planetary hierarchy. Butt, we know just how special it is!

Ok, I'm done, wouldn't want to make an @ss of myself. no.gif

Great pics, RR! You're too modest. (Ok, you're just modest enough! laugh.gif )

new_thumbsupsmileyanim.gif I bow before you RR, I would LOVE to be able to do that...

I'd love to get set up with a telescope to photograph the night sky.

I have NO light pollution at my place to interfere with it either.

I am hoping my grandfather will let my Dad bring his ?Questar? (not sure on the name, only know it's a big telescope with the capability to hook up with a camera) up so I can give it a try. I am just starting my last term for my photography degree and night-sky images are something I LOVE to look at :-)

Just think if the moon had an atmosphere, then it would have water, and weather!!! Well, I guess if that were true then people could live there lol.

Did you know that the moon is moving farther away from the earth every year? It is moving only about an inch farther away each year.

If it was possible for a 747 to fly to the moon it would take 26 days to get there, lol.

And If there were no moon, we would have no tides.

OK I'm finished.

The moon is cool though, I can't believe that people tried to build a ladder to the moon.

Ok, heres a question for you Indy, how was the moon formed?

While I am not Indy, let me take a stab - was it a planet that was captured by Earth's gravity?

My question is why would it be moving away from us at 1 inch per year? I would think due to earth's gravity it would be moving CLOSER and eventually collide with us.

I don't really know, but I have heard 5 different theories of how it was formed.

1# The Fission Theory: The Moon was once part of the Earth and somehow separated from the Earth early in the history of the Solar System. The present Pacific Ocean basin is the most popular site for the part of the Earth from which the Moon came.

2# The Capture Theory: The Moon was formed somewhere else, and was later captured by the gravitational field of the Earth.

3# The Condensation Theory: The Moon and the Earth condensed together from the original nebula that formed the Solar System.

4# The Colliding Planetesimals Theory: The interaction of earth-orbiting and Sun-orbiting planetesimals (very large chunks of rocks like asteroids) early in the history of the Solar System led to their breakup. The Moon condensed from this debris.

5# The Ejected Ring Theory: A planetesimal the size of Mars struck the earth, ejecting large volumes of matter. A disk of orbiting material was formed, and this matter eventually condensed to form the Moon in orbit around the Earth.

This is a result of the earth losing energy because of the tides. The moon gains energy. And the earth-moon system does not gain or lose any energy.

P.S. and sister-mine, as we have found out from our 'oh-so disengenerous' (did i just create a word?) grandfather, we wont be able to do that sad.gif too bad because the farm would be the best place to do it from sad.gif

I wish the camera would take a decent pic with the 6mm lense and the barlow 3x lens attached - I can zoom into about 1/25th of that lower picture

How do you "cna soom"???? sarcasm.gif pokey.gif laugh.gif
