Hot Foodie Trend: Balut (WARNING: Gross Picture)

Recommended Posts

Gourmets in the trendier (i.e. less sane) parts of the U.S. have latched onto the Filipino delicacy of boiling eggs during a rather late stage of development:

I almost put this in the SOCN forum because of possible abortion debates this could raise among some people in TRF. As for me, I just have this rule where I don't eat anything that makes me scream when I look at it. :scared:

I used to work with quite a few Filipino people who would swear this was one of the most delicious things. I played it safe and would only try their noodle dishes and this cake...

Just to clarify, "some people" = "those darn hipsters again". :codger:

There are a few rather humorous ways to get the "A" word going on the thread and get it moved but I ain't go"in there.....

Oh, that one. I thought you meant the whole weird foodie trend thing. Strange for me to talk, though, since I now have a thing of chocolate-covered goji berries on my desk.

Better than balut, which is said to have more than a day's worth of cholesterol.

What in the Hell is that kind of an egg? :scared:

By the way, I'll adapt your rule of not eating anything that makes you scream. Seems very reasonable

I ate a couple of eggs like that back in the 80's on a survival trip. They're not bad.

Even Johnny Blaze won't eat balut and he's posted about all manner of weird and disgusting shit he's eaten since moving to Japan.

I'm afraid my palate is too unsophisticated to appreciate such a "delicacy". At least it's fresh; it could be a lot worse:

That would be the Chinese Century Egg, right? I heard the yolk is the worst part.

My brother and sister-in-law once ate them when we were out to dinner, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I'm like a 12 year old —I won't eat it if it doesn't look and/or smell good.
