Nobody can say former South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney's confidence isn't where it should be.

"I just think I should be the No. 1 pick taken in the draft, overall. So we'll see how that goes," Clowney said Thursday on the Dan Patrick Show.

Clowney's comments came in answer to a question about whether he would like to be chosen by the Atlanta Falcons, who are slated to draft sixth overall, to be closer to family. He said he would be excited for that possibility in Atlanta, but left no doubt about where in the draft he feels he belongs -- right at the top, where the Houston Texans hold the top choice.

Texans owner Bob McNair had some interesting comments about the possibility of drafting Clowney last month. Clowney made 24 sacks in his three-year college career and is thought among NFL scouts to have the sort of immense pass rushing potential befitting of a high first-round pick. The Texans are in need of a quarterback, however, and could pass on Clowney if one of the draft's top quarterback prospects proves to be too appealing.

Clowney also said that he plans to continue putting off surgery to remove bone spurs in his right foot. Initially, he planned to have the surgery after the season, but opted to wait until after the NFL Scouting Combine when his foot responded well to a few weeks of rest in December. Now, his plan is to put off the surgery indefinitely, beyond the combine.

"I doubt it," he said when asked if the surgery would happen after the combine. "It just depends on what the teams want, that get me in the draft. They want me to get it, I'll get it. If they don't, it shouldn't bother me. I'll try to wait until the next offseason to get it done."

Clowney said he plans to participate fully at the combine later this month, saying with a laugh that he hopes to run a 4.4 40. Based on his claim of a 4.46 clocking last summer, which was corroborated by teammates at SEC Media Days, that goal might not be terribly far-fetched.

I think he probably could do a 4.4...

I doubt the oil tycoons in Houston pass on their homeboy, Johnny Football.

Clowney got Carolina a lot of attention, but #1 overall Draft pick would be another feather in the cap.

I hope Connor Shaw gets drafted. He's a great player.

If Houston picks Manziel they'll regret it. I'd take Clowney in a heartbeat with the #1.

It's always entertaining when these egotistical jocks open their mouths. :laughing guy:

Clowney's words and the hype surrounding him make me remember a certain player named Tony Mandarich....

Well, we'll see. You just have to look two picks further in that same draft to find someone with similar hype and mouth to find a counterexample.

Though to counter my Deion you could throw in a T Buck.

That's the rub when it comes to the NFL Draft. These guys getting picked in the 1st round....ya just can't consistently predict how they'll do. For every superstar, there's at least one bust. When they start mouthing off about how great they are, before they play one snap in the NFL, you can't help but see a potential Mandarich or Buckley.

A little humility would be nice, and no one can realistically say what it's like at the NFL level before they get there, that's for sure.

It IS interesting that the top 5 in the 89 draft (or was it the 90 draft) were:

1) Troy Aikman

2) Mandarich

3) Barry Sanders

4) Deion Sanders

5) Derrick Thomas

Four HOFers and Mandarich.

Aikman was probably the fourth best on this list. Which, if you buy that, makes the two worst of the top 5 as drafted by the two teams that were orders of magnitude more successful than those of the three best.

Aikman was probably more valuable than Derrick Thomas but he was surrounded by such a strong team that you could make the case for Thomas.

Mayock's #1 pick?

Jahlil Mack OLB Buffalo

A Mid-American Conference player went first in the 2013 draft, and if NFL Media draft analyst Mike Mayock had his way, a MAC player would go No. 1 in 2014, too.

Appearing on Minneapolis radio station KFAN on Friday morning, Mayock said he would take Buffalo outside linebacker Khalil Mack first overall. Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher was the No. 1 pick in the '13 draft.

"He's explosive off the edge, he's tough, he's twitchy, he's got a little edge about him," Mayock said of Mack.

Buffalo opened the season with a loss to Ohio State, but Mayock said that when he watched tape of that game, "[Mack] dominated Ohio State like nobody I've ever seen dominate them."

Mayock also said that Mack is "really a good kid off the field" as well.

"You talk about a kid like [Jadeveon] Clowney, who's just got superhuman abilities, versus this kid, and if I had a choice between the two, I think I'm taking Mack," Mayock said.

Mayock said Mack is a prototype outside linebacker in a 3-4, but that he also would fit as a "Sam" linebacker in a 4-3, and would really shine in pass-rush situations.

Mack was listed at 6-foot-3 and 248 pounds at Buffalo. His official weigh-in at the NFL Scouting Combine comes Saturday.

Mack set an NCAA career record with 16 forced fumbles and is tied for first in NCAA history with 75 tackles for loss; he is tied with former Western Michigan defensive end Jason Babin, who started for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2013. Mack also had 28.5 career sacks. Mack has been compared with Denver Broncos sack specialist Von Miller.

Has anyone ever gotten more mileage out of one play?

Doug Flutie.

Maybe, but not enough to make the NFL to take much interest.

Terrell Suggs had something like 22 sacks in his last season, and no one was talking about him being picked #1. Clowney had 3 last year.

He was double teamed by SEC offensive lineman. That's why a Kelcy Quarles was able to make plays. We don't play in a pansy league.

What's with the Clowney hate?

I hope the Clowney hate extends down through the league until the Fins pick.

THIS is the year that we should trade up to #3.
