Saints receiver Joe Morgan has barely played this year, and it doesn’t appear that he will play any time soon.

 

Morgan, who started Week One but didn’t catch a pass and hasn’t played since, has now been suspended. The Saints announced today that Morgan has been placed on the reserve/suspended list, but they did not explain why.

 

The 26-year-old Morgan has shown flashes of great talent, but he’s never been able to put that talent to use consistently. Morgan signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2011, spent all season on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury in the preseason, and then emerged as a big-play threat in 2012, catching just 10 passes but totaling a whopping 379 yards on those 10 catches. Morgan missed the entire 2013 season after suffering a torn ACL in training camp.

 

Off-field issues derailed Morgan’s college career, which began at Illinois but concluded at Walsh University. Now it appears that the combination of injuries and off-field issues may have derailed his NFL career as well.

The New Orleans Saints placed wide receiver Joe Morgan on the reserve/suspended list on Tuesday. Coach Sean Payton did not provide any details.

 

"Damn," Morgan tweeted a few hours prior to the announcement on Tuesday morning, but did not elaborate. He was not present at practice on Tuesday.

 

It is unknown at this time if Morgan's suspension was mandated by the league or the team.

 

Morgan's tenure with the team has been a roller coaster ride. He was arrested in Jefferson Parish on May 29, 2013, on DWI charges, to which he pleaded not guilty in September of 2013.

 

The charges were dropped when Morgan elected to enter the district attorney's office diversion program last March, an alternative to criminal prosecution for low-risk, first-time offenders.

 

But Morgan has had his on-field struggles too.

 

He tore his ACL in training camp last summer, and spent the rest of the season on IR while rehabbing. He also spent the 2011 season on injured reserve.

 

Morgan was a restricted free agent this offseason, but the Saints elected not to offer him a tender.

 

Morgan has been inactive since Week 1 for unknown reasons. The Saints have six receivers on the roster but typically activate only four on game days. Robert Meachem has gotten the nod ahead of Morgan and Nick Toon.

 

Morgan, whose locker was still intact, was not available for comment. Calls to his agent were not immediately returned.

 

Morgan will not count against the 53-man roster while on the reserve/suspended list. The Saints re-signed tight end Tom Crabtree in his place.

Saints' 'simpatico' Sean Payton and Drew Brees among all-time great combos

Drew Brees and Sean Payton have been at the forefront of the NFL's current pass-happy era.

 

METAIRIE, La. -- Sean Payton paused as he was trying to think of the perfect analogy to describe the conversation he and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees had on the sideline before Brees' 1-yard touchdown leap on fourth-and-goal last week at Carolina.

 

"It's like that buddy that convinces you, 'Let's go out for more dessert,' and you just let him go do it," Payton said. "When I know what he wants to do, it's like, 'Go ahead.'"

 

That trust factor, that camaraderie has been thriving since 2006 in New Orleans, where Payton and Brees have cemented themselves as one of the great coach-quarterback combos in NFL history. ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer places Payton and Brees in a group of what he called "simpatico" pairings who have "set themselves apart" since Bill Walsh and Joe Montana formed perhaps the greatest such collaboration.

 

Dilfer mentioned Mike Shanahan and John Elway in Denver; Shanahan and Steve Young in San Francisco, when Shanahan was an offensive coordinator; coordinator Tom Moore and Peyton Manning in Indianapolis; and coordinator Bill O'Brien and Tom Brady in New England.

"Those coaches understand, 'That guy holds the ball,' and they can't be a control freak. They gotta trust him," Dilfer said. "What I really respect most about Sean and the other coaches is when it doesn't work. There's gonna be calls that don't -- interceptions, mistakes. I respect a lot of things about Sean, but the one I probably respect most is that he doesn't flinch. He keeps staying aggressive and showing more trust in Drew."

 

Another worthy combo would be Mike Holmgren and Brett Favre in Green Bay. Holmgren was a disciple of Walsh, who teamed with Montana to guide San Francisco to three Super Bowl victories in the 1980s. Montana won a fourth under George Seifert -- using Walsh's West Coast offense.

 

Lombardi Trophies aside, Bobby Hebert said it isn't a stretch to compare Payton-Brees and Walsh-Montana, tandems known for collaboration and innovation.

 

"That's few and far between, when you look at that head coach/coordinator-and-Hall of Fame-quarterback combination," said Hebert, a former Saints quarterback and current analyst who played second fiddle to Walsh and Montana in the old NFC West. "It's a fair comparison, and it's not a big category."

 

Hebert pointed out that analysts recently touted the success of Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers by saying they've had a top-10 offense in five of their six seasons together.

 

"Well, all eight years, the Saints have been a top-six offense. And four out of the eight, they've been No. 1," Hebert said. "So you look at that ranking and what it takes to be that consistent, I mean, c'mon, how can you argue?

 

"And you can say the rule changes [protecting the quarterback and limiting contact against receivers] and all that, but still you gotta go out there and execute."

 

In addition to winning the only Super Bowl in Saints history, Brees and the offense have produced staggering numbers since 2006.

 

Over that span, they lead the NFL in total yards (404.2 per game, including a league-record 7,474 in 2011) and Brees leads all quarterbacks with 41,257 passing yards and 298 touchdown passes. He's the only quarterback in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards more than once -- and he has done it four times since 2008. Brees has also twice broken the record for completion percentage in a season.

 

Saints linebacker Parys Haralson, who spent six seasons in San Francisco, said Payton and Brees have always had the attention and respect of opposing defenses. "You have to be ready to stop everything," Haralson said. "And you can't make a mistake, because a mistake can cost you a touchdown."

Payton's "aggressive nature" and "swagger" are traits his QB appreciates.

 

What Payton and Brees do best is create and exploit mismatches. Payton switches up the personnel and formations throughout his first 15 plays to gain information on how a defense covers everything -- and he has always done it with unique matchup headaches such as Jimmy Graham, Marques Colston, Darren Sproles and Reggie Bush. Then, when coach and quarterback spot a weakness, they pounce.

 

"Payton was one of the first coaches to use three tight ends, two backs and run spread concepts, which would force defenses into certain personnel packages," Dilfer said of a tact that O'Brien gladly copied in New England.

 

When asked if it's possible to distinguish who means more in the Payton-Brees relationship, Dilfer said he leans toward coaches because he doesn't think they get enough credit for developing Hall of Fame quarterbacks.

 

"Not taking anything away from those quarterbacks, Drew especially. But overall I think it's a poorly coached position, and the great ones are so good at coaching it," Dilfer said. "Sean pulled the greatness out of Drew Brees. Bill Walsh pulled the greatness out of Joe Montana. Mike Shanahan pulled the greatness out of Steve Young. Tom Moore pulled that greatness out of Peyton Manning after [28] interceptions in that first season.

 

"You see a lot of talented quarterbacks that never have that greatness pulled out of them."

 

Hebert feels the opposite, saying that even Payton would admit, "You've gotta have the trigger man."

 

It's a moot point since, as Hebert put it, Payton and Brees can practically read each other's minds and see the same things when they're watching film or discussing play calls -- something Hebert said he has picked up when talking X's and O's with them.

 

"Sean Payton never made it in the NFL as a quarterback, but he has a starting NFL quarterback's mind," Hebert said. "So you put him and Drew Brees together and it's a double whammy."

 

Payton said he doesn't "take it for granted" how much stability Brees has brought to his program. And Brees said, "I wouldn't want to play for any other coach."

 

"I love his aggressive nature," Brees added. "I love his love of the game and his approach each and every day to practice and to preparation, and then on game day. You know, he's got a swagger to him. And I love playing for him."
