$500,000 guaranteed for Champ Bailey

Posted by Mike Florio on April 13, 2014, 11:57 AM EDT

http://nbcprofootballtalk.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/bailey.jpg?w=231

The Broncos were supposed to pay cornerback Champ Bailey $9 million in 2014. He’ll make 1/18th of that guaranteed in New Orleans.

Per a league source, NFLPA records reveal that the future Hall of Famer received $500,000 in guaranteed money as part of his two-year deal with the Saints. Initially reported as being worth “up to” $7 million, the contract pays out a base amount of $1.75 million in 2014 and $2 million in 2015, for a base value of $3.75 million.

To get the base amount in 2014, Bailey must be on the game-day roster for six or more games. If he is, he gets $250,000. If not, he will have made $1.5 million in 2014.

In 2015, the Saints owe a $250,000 roster bonus on the fifth day of the league year. Bailey gets another $250,000 if he’s on the 53-man roster for the first game of the 2015 season. The base salary is $1.5 million.

The deal also contains $150,000 in incentives per year based on interceptions, and $150,000 per year for Pro Bowl. He can make $1.2 million in 2014 or 2015 for playing time, and the deal includes a $1.2 million playing-time escalator for 2015.

If the NFLPA numbers are right, that’s a maximum value of $6.75 million, not $7 million. To get the $6.75 million over two years, Bailey will have to play like the guy who was supposed to make $9 million in the final year of his contract in Denver.

It’s not impossible that he will. Bailey played very well when healthy in 2013. The only problem is that he wasn’t healthy for much of the season, due to a foot injury suffered in the preseason.

Overturning of Bush fine doesn’t mean penalty call was wrong

Posted by Mike Florio on April 13, 2014, 2:37 PM EDT

http://nbcprofootballtalk.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/harvin.jpg?w=224

The news that the appeal process resulted in the scuttling of the $21,000 fine imposed on Saints safety Rafael Bush for his postseason hit on Seahawks receiver Percy Harvin has prompted some Saints fans to assume (reasonably) no penalty should have been called on the play.

Which, if accurate, means the Seahawks on the opening drive of the game would have been facing fourth and 11 from the Saints’ 41.

But that’s not necessarily the case. As a source with knowledge of the appeal process explained it to PFT, fines apply only for egregious violations. A violation can still happen, but without rising to the level of something for which the player should be fined.

In this specific case, Bush didn’t apply a classic helmet-to-helmet hit on Harvin, at a time when he was a defenseless receiver. Bush led with his shoulder.

Still, in real time, it appeared that the blow was delivered to Harvin’s head/neck area. On appeal, the determination was made that, while there may have been incidental contact with the head/neck area, the blow was not forcible to the head/neck area.

So while a violation justifying a penalty may have occurred, it wasn’t enough to result in a fine that was upheld on appeal. Which means the overturning of the fine doesn’t necessarily mean the flag shouldn’t have been thrown.

Loomis: Saints' offseason going as planned

From the outside looking in, the New Orleans Saints’ offseason has probably seemed a bit hectic.

The Saints have been full of surprises, from the big-name acquisitions of Jairus Byrd and Champ Bailey to the big-name departures of Darren Sproles and others.

http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2014/0310/nfl_u_mloomts_600x400.jpg

Mickey Loomis has made several key additions to the Saints' roster despite salary-cap constraints.

Based on reactions from fans and national analysts alike, the biggest head-scratcher of all has been the fact that the Saints keep adding ammo to the roster despite a tight squeeze against the salary cap.

But none of these moves have been made on the fly.

General manager Mickey Loomis insisted last week that just about every move the Saints made was part of a calculated plan.

“It’s not a process where all of a sudden there’s somebody [available] and you decide, ‘Hey, let’s go do this,’” Loomis said while speaking with reporters at LSU’s pro day.

“We have a short-term plan and a long-term plan,” Loomis continued. “And we come into each offseason with 19 or 20 or 25 different things that we want to get accomplished. And you just kind of go down the checklist. And obviously things come up that are unexpected, and you have to react to those. But for the most part, it’s a plan and an execution of the plan.

“So I would say it was kind of business as usual.”

Asked how many of those items the Saints have hit, Loomis said, “We’ve hit a lot of them. We always do. We don’t hit every item, but we hit almost all of them.”

(Click here for a recap of all the Saints' moves as of the beginning of last week.)

The Saints are actually in great shape with the salary cap after agreeing to a pay cut with defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley last week. They’re now $3.6 million under the cap, and they probably don’t have too many more expensive purchases left in their shopping cart.

New Orleans still has some noteworthy tasks left to complete. The biggest is signing tight end Jimmy Graham to a long-term contract extension, but Loomis insisted that there is no immediate pressure to get that done. Graham's franchise tag figure is already counting $7.035 million against the Saints' salary cap, so they don't need to clear out any new cap space for him.

The Saints also need to find a new starting center after letting Brian de la Puente get away in free agency, though they like second-year pro Tim Lelito’s potential as a candidate for that role.

And there are a few other positions where New Orleans needs to get younger, including receiver, but most of those needs can be filled through the draft.

As Loomis suggested, we won’t know until the fall whether the Saints’ plan worked out. But so far, at least, everything is going as planned.

“I feel like we’ve executed our plan well,” Loomis said. “Whether that’s a good plan or not remains to be seen. But we feel like it is.”

Bradley Roby

A team that’s a prime candidate to add at cornerback in the 2014 NFL Draft reportedly hosted five prospects at the position on Tuesday.

According to ESPN’s Adam Caplan, Oklahoma’s Aaron Colvin, Lindenwood’s Pierre Desir, Oklahoma State’s Justin Gilbert, Baylor’s Demetri Goodson and Ohio State’s Bradley Roby all visited the Saints today.

The Saints select 27th in Round One. They recently signed former Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey, bolstering their options at the position in the short term. However, Bailey will be 36 at the beginning of the 2014 campaign. Also, Patrick Robinson, the Saints’ 2010 first-round pick, will be a free agent after this season.

Three CBs from a (college) league where the offenses average seemingly more than 50 ppg? Hmmm...

Well we can't expect Bailey to keep up with that at his age, he's hoping for 15 ppg, and he'll be in luck with the Panties and the Bucs but Matty Hype will be throwing 70 ppg since they'll be playing from behind all season long.

Jairus Byrd looks forward to getting inside Rob Ryan’s head

Posted by Darin Gantt on April 17, 2014, 10:06 AM EDT

http://nbcprofootballtalk.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/99d0b66727f1d1c69a11ea6fef9108f2.jpeg?w=250

Jairus Byrd joined the Saints for several reasons, including the fact they paid him a lot of money.

But the former Bills safety said he was looking forward to bringing his ability to create turnovers to the creative defenses of coordinator Rob Ryan.

“To have that ability with an offense that’s gonna put up points and a stingy defense like that and exotic in the way Coach Ryan calls things, it’s unorthodox, it’s gonna keep people guessing,” Byrd said, via Mike Triplett of ESPN.com. “That combination right there was enough.”

His conversations with Ryan have been limited about his role so far, but Byrd said he could tell it’s going to be exciting.

“Yeah, definitely,” Byrd said. “Look, he has some stuff in his head that he’s gonna get out one way or the other.”

Putting Byrd next to last year’s first-round pick Kenny Vaccaro should allow Ryan to get even more creative, as he has two established playmakers in the back of his defense.

Along with a unit that outperformed every expectation a year ago, that gives Byrd plenty to look forward to.

New Orleans Saints re-sign WR Robert Meachem to a one-year deal

Posted 53 minutes ago

By NewOrleansSaints.com

Robert Meachem had 16 receptions for 324 yards and two touchdowns in 2013

http://www.neworleanssaints.com/assets/article_images_new/meachem_contract_article.jpg

Spending the 2012 season in San Diego, all but 14 of the catches and two of the touchdowns have occurred in a Saints uniform. His 16.5 yards per catch average in a Saints uniform is ranked second all-time in club record books. In eight playoff games with one start for the Black and Gold, Meachem has posted 17 receptions for 293 yards (17.2 avg.) with one touchdown.

The Tulsa, Okla., native re-signed with the Saints prior to the start of the 2013 regular season. He appeared in 15 games with five starts and finished with 16 receptions for 324 yards with two touchdowns. In two postseason contests, one of which he started, he posted three receptions for 109 yards (36.3 avg.).

Meachem said signing with the Saints now should help with his preparations as he will be able to take part in the team's offseason conditioning program, OTAs and mini-camp. Plus, "this is home," he said.

Meachem said he's excited to test his skills against another veteran the Saints signed this offseason, defensive back Champ Bailey. According to Meachem, Bailey "is already a Hall of Famer."

Meachem said going against a player like Bailey, who has such a deep understanding of football and route running, will make him better and the team better.

Five players ready for bigger roles: Offense

By Marc Sessler

Around the League Writer

1. Kenny Stills, WR, New Orleans Saints: Lance Moore and Darren Sproles combined for 108 catches and more than 1,000 yards receiving last season. Neither will be back, leaving Stills as the stand-alone No. 2 wideout alongside Marques Colston. Stills played 708 snaps last season, but saw just 51 targets from Drew Brees. He made the most of his opportunities as a rookie, ranking second in the NFL with an average of 20 yards per catch. Stills can take the top off a defense, but he's more than just a one-dimensional pass catcher. He'll be given a chance to do it all for New Orleans.

4. Travaris Cadet, RB, New Orleans Saints: Sproles can't be replaced by one guy, but coach Sean Payton singled out Cadet last month as a guy he's counting on. I went back and watched all of the third-year back's preseason snaps from last season. He needs to do a better job holding onto the ball, but Cadet made tough catches out of the backfield and showed some wiggle in open space. He'll face competition in camp -- and we like Khiry Robinson -- but Cadet earned praise from Payton as "someone that is very comfortable in that (Sproles) role, and I think he can run."

Yeah but Byrd got to play against Tannehill twice a year...

Jenkins had Josh Freeman and Matty Ice Cream twice a year though...

Well, unless he's sitting in the stands, there's no chance of a pick against Freeman.

And now, for the trump card...two games a year vs this guy.

New Orleans Saints exercise fifth-year option on defensive end Cam Jordan

http://imgick.nola.com/home/nola-media/width620/img/tpphotos/photo/2013/12/13985415-mmmain.jpg

Defensive end Cam Jordan won't be hitting the free-agent market after the 2014 season. The New Orleans Saints exercised a fifth-year team option on Jordan where he'll make $6.969 million in base salary in 2015, according to the NFLPA website.

Teams are allowed to place a fifth-year option on a first-round pick from the 2011 NFL draft as part of the current collective bargaining agreement. If the Saints didn't exercise the option, a possible franchise tag for Jordan after the 2014 season would cost at least double the price of the option.

Jordan, 24, has been a consistent piece to the Saints defense highlighted by his 2013 season. Jordan, the 24th overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, picked up 12 1/2 sacks to the lead the Saints last season and earned his first Pro Bowl roster spot.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Saints haven't issued a fifth-year option on running back Mark Ingram, the No. 28 overall pick in 2011.

The Saints are less likely to issue Ingram a fifth-year option. It would cost the Saints around $5 million reportedly to issue the option to Ingram.

The team has until May 3 to decide on Ingram.

He was our first first round pick in 2011 (a few spots before we got Ingram), he's turning out to be a really good player, looks like he might eclipse Aldon Smith now after Smith looked like the better prospect after his first season and half.
