Exactly why do people hate Dog Years again?

I popped in Test For Echo today at random, and one track caught my ear as especially fun, lighthearted, catchy, and instrumentally worthwhile. That track is Dog Years.

I've seen a lot of hate for it over the years on here. Why?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this track, other than that it doesn't take itself too seriously... which isn't really anything wrong with it. It's a great song!

I think it's because of the cheesy, tongue in cheek lyrics of the song. People can't seem to grasp Neil stepping out of the box of his usual serious, intelligent, introspective lyric writing approach. I love the "tortoise from Galagapos" line:) Edited by presto123

The one decent moment are the "tortoise from galapogos" sections - other than that, the lyrics are more trite and cutesy than they are Neil stepping out of a comfort zones and the rhymes and puns are forced.

The biggest falw, though, is that its a weak and shallow rehash of "Time Stand Still"

Besides, Neil's opinion that dogs only have this "buzz of low-level static" going through their minds? Please....

Yeah, I really don't get why so many people are turned off by cheese. This song contains many clever little puns and entendres that make the lyrics a real treat. There's a whimsical impudence about it that I really enjoy. It's a very fun, very good song.

I don't mind the cheesiness and I certainly don't hate the song. Some parts make me smile. I don't like the chorus very much though—it's kind of annoying.

Just posted this right after you did. Agree totally. LOL

I remember liking it the first time I heard it. In fact, I initially thought it was one of the stronger tracks on TFE.

I've never given much thought to the why many folks don't get it. I'd gotten to the point years ago that there isn't any Rush song I don't like, and I know what I like (in your wardrobe).

Not everyone has to like every song. Thats what called TASTES. :musicnote: :musicnote: :musicnote: :musicnote: :musicnote: :musicnote: :musicnote: :musicnote: :musicnote: :musicnote:

It shouldn't need to be said, but here's why this song doesn't work:

In a dog's life

A year is really more like seven

And all too soon a canine

Will be chasing cars in doggie heaven

It seems to me

As we make our own few circles 'round the sun

We get it backwards

And our seven years go by like one

Dog years --- It's the season of the itch

Dog years --- With every scratch it reappears

In the dog days

People look to Sirius

Dogs cry for the moon

But these connections are mysterious

It seems to me

While it's true that every dog will have his day

When all the bones are buried

There is barely time to go outside and play

Dog years --- It's the season of the itch

Dog years --- With every scratch it reappears

Dog years --- For every sad son of a bitch

Dog years --- With his tail between his ears

I'd rather be a tortoise from Galapagos

Or a span of geological time

Than be living in these dog years

In a dog's brain

A constant buzz of low-level static

One sniff at the hydrant

And the answer is automatic

It seems to me

As well make our own few circles 'round the block

We've lost our senses

For the higher-level static of talk

It's no "I Think I'm Going Bald"! I think "Dog Years" simply misses the mark. The worst thing about the song is I don't think it's funny. Wasn't Neil Peart hung over when he wrote the lyrics?

I don't understand the hate either. I like the song too, it's probably my 6th or 7th favorite on the album (which is one of my favorites) and I personally love pun-fueled lyrics, even if this one does miss the mark. Musically though it's fun.

Typical goober lazyness. The only way to be lazier is to post the song and type "See?" He did spare you all a five paragraph snoosefest though.

I suppose it comes down to Neil's brand of whimsy then. Some folks don't care for it. I guess they're happy he didn't follow it up with '9 Lives'.

:musicnote:

In a cat's life

A death is really one of nine

And all too soon a feline

Will pull in its tounge and feel just fine

:musicnote:

:P

There's certainly nothing wrong with the music.

Ok, I'd like to add to my hate for this song.

I SKIPPED THIS DURING AN OPERATION.

I LISTENED TO A HELL OF A LOT OF SONGS I DON'T LIKE THAT DAY, BUT SKIPPED THIS

You're right. What I should have added at the end of pasting the lyrics was:

/thread

It's pretty simple with this song. The lyrics quite obviously suck large donkey balls. Maybe I should have said that as it would have been more succinct, but showing the lyrics allows everyone to see it for themselves. Asking why do people hate Dog Years is like asking why do people hate things that suck? If anyone wants to question that, let me again refer them to the above lyrics. ;)
