Anthony Fasano signs 4 yr deal with Chiefs.

I think he led the Fins in TD catches last year

Do you think he can still stretch the field, though?

He's a quality receiver but he's not the deep threat Wallace is. I wouldn't mind having Jennings but will be happy with either, and I wouldn't mind skipping the Cook deal and signing Jennings if they don't blow the entire cap that way.

If i was the Dolphins GM right now, I'd draft a receiver. The best available. Probably Austin. Patterson will be gone most likely.

Any chance they could trade out of #12? I've always been a fan of stockpiling picks though the pendulum seems to have swung the other way and teams are loath to give up too many since the Jimmy Johnson chart seems to have fallen out of favor (it was way too heavily weighted toward the top of the draft.)

Yeah but it depends who wants to trade up obviously. I think the Texans might want to, in their minds they need a receiver after two play-off runs that failed.

But not just for a WR, for anyone...

Dolphins agree with Dannell Ellerbe

One of the breakout players of the Ravens’ Super Bowl run has found a new home.

Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe has agreed to terms with the Dolphins, Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday.

The 27-year-old Ellerbe notched 32 tackles in four postseason games for the Ravens, including nine in Super Bowl XLVII.

Ellerbe was No. 39 on PFT’s list of the top 100 free agents.

With Ellerbe and outside linebacker / defensive end Paul Kruger departing in free agency and with middle linebacker Ray Lewis retiring, the Ravens have lost three key contributors from a title-winning defense.

The Dolphins have added up-and-coming linebacker Dannell Ellerbe to the fold, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun and that raises interesting questions for the Dolphins.

Terms of the deal have not been announced but it is unlikely Ellerbe agreed to a deal that would make him a backup.

[update: I'm told the deal is for five years and $34.75 million. That is starter money.]

So yes, it is good the team is adding younger, faster, players with playmaking potential.

But ... The Dolphins have a solid linebacker corps in Karlos Dansby, Kevin Burnett and Koa Misi.

So is one of them on the outs?

Salguero answer: You betcha!

It won't be Misi. Even if the team moves him to defensive end he remains on the team.

The same would not be said if the Dolphins plan to play Ellerbe in the middle of their defense, which is where he made his mark with Baltimore.

Ellerbe had 92 tackles and 4.5 sacks for the Ravens in 2012. He's only 27 years old.

That seems to make Dansby expendable if the Dolphins wish to save money as well as cap space. Dansby is scheduled to cost Miami $8.575 million in cap space in 2013. If the club cuts him, it can save $6.05 million in cash and $3.925 million in cap space.

The club would also save $9 million in cash next year because that is what Dansby would be scheduled to make in base salary. Dansby's cap number in 2014 is scheduled to be $11.575 million.

The Dolphins might also ask Dansby to take a paycut, but that's also doubtful.

Yikes.

If Dansby, 31, is on the outs, it shows the dangers of unrestricted free agency. He came to the Dolphins in 2010 as the savior of the defense. He came the same year that Brandon Marshall came as the savior of the offense.

Marshall has since been traded. Dansby might be on the outs.

I suppose the Dolphins could decide Burnett is expendable in favor of Ellerbe. This is less likely because Ellerbe doesn't play strongside linebacker. But this also lead to a cap savings. If the Dolphins dump Burnett, they would save $3.2 million against the cap and $4.35 million in actual cash this year.

Again, this is the lesser likelihood.

It is possible the Dolphins are trying to get younger, cheaper and have someone that made plays for the Ravens last year when pressed into service.

http://walterfootball.com/images/fball/dolphinsb_logo.gif Dolphins sign WR Brandon Gibson (3 years, $9.78 million): MILLEN JEALOUS OF LINDSEY VONN; KIELBASASA AT THE READY FOR TIGER Grade

I'm convinced Jeff Ireland is drunk at this point. What the hell did Brandon Gibson do to deserve a 3-year contract worth about $10 million? Gibson is just an average backup wideout at best, and he'll serve that role in Miami behind Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline. Ireland could have just signed a receiver just as good as Gibson for much, much less.

Dolphins logo all but verified; shown on jersey

http://news.sportslogos.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/570x375xfeaturedfield1.jpg.pagespeed.ic.aXcTaX6NnT.jpg

It must be tough, in the age of the internet, immediate dissemination of info, world-wide reach, cell phone cameras in everyone’s pocket… to be a team trying to hype up and release a new logo. You set a date to release it, that works well with your marketing plan, your team’s schedule. Then, in the months, weeks, days leading up to your release you are so excited about, the internet blabs your business, your new look, all over the place. It must make marketing departments sad.

But us logo and design fans, we love it. We get to see stuff early, and feel special. We get to see what teams are thinking, and get to casually mention it around our friend who don’t follow all the right accounts to get to see this stuff early. Aren’t you glad you are here?

A photo has been making its rounds, through several channels, eventually finding its way onto the @UniWatch twitter feed, of the new Miami Dolphins logo, on the shoulder of a Nike jersey. It seems like a massaged, improved version of the logo we saw several weeks ago. Everything about it looks official.

http://news.sportslogos.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/590x590xBFuTQ5iCYAMCxQ8-590x590.png.pagespeed.ic.atmvvWePZM.png

Improvements include; Fixed lighting on the fins, making them teal with navy shadows, a refined sunburst, and now, an eye!

Seems legit. Now, where on earth did it come from? Well, that’s a little more difficult to ascertain. Paul Lukas was nice enough to share with us that he came across it from one of his readers, who tweeted it to him, after finding it on the instagram account of a user named “sneaker_pimp_simmons” (Didja follow that?))

One assumes Mr Sneaker is associated with the Sneaker Pimps sneaker and street art show. Though, few references to the people behind the show were forthcoming, so this is just an unfounded assumption.

So, if we can’t validate thew person who posted the image (and we aren’t even sure he was the one who originated the photo, he could have just shared it) how can we validate the logo?

New Dolphin Dustin Keller has updated his Twitter page to indicate his new team. Guess what logo he used?

http://news.sportslogos.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/590x386xkeller-590x386.jpg.pagespeed.ic.jCVHHJeuMM.jpg

Sure, he could have just searched Google for the new logo just like anyone, but one might imagine that he had some sort of knowledge on the subject.

Why didn’t he use the currently official logo?

http://content.sportslogos.net/logos/7/150/full/875.gif

So, like any good reporter or news organization, you call other sources to verify. We did. And the answer we got was only given under complete anonymity. But that person said the one “floating around” was legit. So, we feel that we have a solid hook, set in the mouth of this fish. (Not the dolphin, its not a fish. Just a tortured metaphor.)

How about you? Do you believe this is the logo? Does the jersey picture seal the deal for you, as it did most of us sitting around the large, oval mahogany conference table here at World Sports Logos Headquarters and Command Center?

Or are you waiting for the official release, April 18th, to make that decision?

Knowing that most accurate leaks come from apparel companys’ employees taking secret photos, this one seems 100% to your author.

I like the old one better. But I don't think this is bland...I guess it supposed to be sleeker and faster.

I just hopes it does for the Fins what their logo change did for the Broncos in 1997.

Mark "Not so Super" Duper, ex-Dolphin WR, arrested for allegedly beating son

Associated Press

Published: March 21, 2013 at 06:19 p.m.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Mark Duper was released from jail Thursday, charged after police say he beat his 17-year-old son during a series of fights at their Jacksonville home.

Duper, who starred for the Dolphins from 1982 to 1992, spent a night in jail after his arrest Wednesday on one count of felony child abuse. He was released Thursday afternoon after posting a $5,000 bail, police in Jacksonville said.

Authorities say Duper attacked his son, Marcus, three times and knocked him out twice.

Duper told The Miami Herald that the fight was "a family matter."

"This is not an open book. I have to deal with this within my family," he was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

Duper caught 511 passes for 8,869 yards and 59 touchdowns in his 11-year career with the Dolphins. Duper, who legally changed his name to Mark Super Duper, was named to three Pro Bowls and was a two-time All-Pro selection. He is a member of the Dolphins Honor Roll.

Former Dolphins defensive end Hugh Green told The Associated Press by telephone that he witnessed the brawls. He said Marcus Duper started the fights, thinking he could "beat his father." Green and his 18-year-old son had stopped to visit Duper and his son after attending a charity golf outing in Miami earlier in the week.

"I saw Mark defending himself after a young son was defiant," Green said.

Green said Duper's wife, the mother of Marcus, died several years ago.

According to Jacksonville police records, the first fight allegedly began when Duper learned his son had sent a threatening text to the teen's former girlfriend. The younger Duper denied he had done anything wrong. Police said that started an argument between the two that led to fisticuffs.

The police report said Duper "punched his son in the face one time because he wouldn't listen to him about picking up his hat." The report said Duper then "took his son to the ground, grabbed him, then picked him up several times and slammed him to the ground, causing him to lose consciousness for a short period of time."

Duper then ordered his son out of the house, according to authorities. The son left but returned to get a jacket, the report said, which resulted in a second fight.

Green stepped in to break up the fight and, the report says, discovered that Marcus Duper "lost consciousness once again for a short period of time."

Green said he then escorted Marcus Duper out of the house. The teen then "pushed his bike into his father's vehicle" according to the police report.

The elder Duper saw him and went outside to confront his son a third time. Police say Duper "climbed on top of his son, grabbed his son by the neck and began choking his son."

Green again intervened and the younger Duper went to a friend's residence.

No date has been set for Duper's next court appearance.

After a brief quiet period following his active first few days in free agency, Miami Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland has ramped things up again free agent signings in three of the last four days with this morning’s addition former Atlanta Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes.

Former San Diego Chargers defensive lineman Vaughn Martin was added Thursday and on Wednesday Ireland signed former Chicago Bears offensive tackle Lance Louis.

“We are happy that we have reached an agreement with Brent,” Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland said. “He will be a great addition to the secondary both on the field and in the meeting room.”

The 29-year-old Grimes suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in Atlanta’s season-opening victory over the Chiefs last September and landed on Injured Reserve. He had received the franchise tag and moved to right cornerback to be paired with Asante Samuel and looked to be taking that step into the elite level among the league’s corners despite his size (5-foot-10, 181 pounds).

Back in 2006, the Falcons signed Grimes as an undrafted free agent and he took a very unconventional route to the 53-man roster. He was allocated to the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe and then re-signed in May of 2007 and signed back to the practice squad. The Falcons promoted to the active roster twice and then he became a regular in 2008, starting six of 12 games.

By 2010, Grimes had established himself as a key member of the Falcons defense was selected as a Pro Bowl alternate after intercepting fie passes and racking up 87 tackles (76 solo). He had six interceptions in 2009 and started all 12 games in 2011 as well.

Not sure what the track record of CBs coming back from Achilles injuries is. if he recovers 100%, it's obviously a huge steal. My suspicion is that a 100% return isn't often if ever the case.

It's also disconcerting that the Fins signed someone from the Bears OL...that can't be good.

Extreme Makeover, Jeff Ireland edition.

Hope it works. We may have the second best team in the division. Let's hope that's saying something more than that we're a 6-10 team.

To paraphrase a drummer/lyricist you may know...

If you choose not to do anything you still have made a choice.

Let's hope Ireland has made things better, and not worse. Maybe we can follow the lead of the 1997 Broncos and ride a new look (which was also a downgrade to the team's look) to a championship!

The Fins new DB speaks...

(On his decision to join the Dolphins) -- “It seemed like a great opportunity and they stressed they wanted me here. That is always something that a person likes to hear. Jeff Ireland, the Head Caoch Joe Philbin and the Defensive Coordinator Kevin Coyle and the DB coach were all in contact with me and telling me that they really wanted me here and I can be a big part on what they are trying to do. That played a major role in me deciding to come to Miami.”

(On how Miami kept in touch with him during this period) -- “I am pretty sure you know I came on a visit and talked to them. After the visit they kept in touch with me and told me (that) they really wanted me to be here and they liked what I can do on the field. (They) just texted or called or however.

(On why he chose Miami and what took so long to get the deal done) -- “I’ve never been a free agent so I was dealing with my agent. He was working and getting the stuff together. I was just going on visits. I picked Miami because I think they are building something great here and I would love to be a part of it. They really showed a lot of interest in having me here. That played a major role in me deciding to come to Miami.”

(On his Achilles) -- “I am doing great. I’m doing everything. It’s just about getting all of your strength back to where you were before. As far as…I don’t have any restrictions right now. My workouts…if you look on the internet, my wife is always putting up videos of me doing stuff (laughing). I am doing great. I am really encouraged by this rehab. I look it as a challenge and I respond well to challenges and I am 100% confident that I will be straight in no time.”

(On timeframe when he will be 100%) -- “I am not going to do timeframes. I just know the surgeon (said) six to eight months or something like that, but I feel great. Like I said, I don’t have any restrictions right now. I am running and everything. It’s just building up your strength and everything. That’s part of the process, but I have plenty of time. With the offseason workouts and getting everything in shape, I will be great.”

(On if he will participate in OTAs) -- “I don’t know. I will be there. I will be doing things and see what I can do and what they want me to do. How many practices…I’m not sure. Honestly I can’t give you an answer right now, but I feel like…”

(On his strengths) -- “I feel that I am a great playmaker. I make plays on the ball. I play the ball in the air very well. I can bring that to the team. That’s why they wanted me here, because of my ability to make plays.”

(On if Terrell Sugg’s coming back from the saem Achilles injury encourages him) -- “It was cool to see that he came back and played last year. The injury altogether…it improved with the surgery and everything improved. Just like any injury nowadays, ACLs. It is not like a while ago. Those types of injuries were devastating. There was a corner I followed last year that came off a torn achilles that had a great year, Leon Hall for the Bengals. I watched him a lot. That encouraged me the most because we played the same position and I got to watch him and he played well all year.”

(On the defense) -- “They have some great players on defense. That was definitely one of the strong factors. I like his scheme and how they are aggressive and the defensive line. They are a great defensive line that can get after the quarterback and create problems for quarterbacks and disguise looks. I believe that is any secondary players’ dream is to have a pass rush that makes it a problem for the quarterback. He just can’t sit back there an be comfortable.”

(On what it takes for a quarterback to be effective in a zone quarterback scheme) -- “Just a feel for the game, instinct and skills. I feel that I can play any type…I am not just a zone corner. The zone takes knowing football and knowing where you are supposed to be and knowing where your help is going to be and just being a smart football player. That helps in a lot in playing in any type of scheme, not just this one. Being smart and having great instincts help a great deal.”

(On Joe Philbin) -- “He is a great guy. I haven’t actually sat in front of Joe Philbin. I talked to him on the phone. When I came on my visit, I think he had to go out of town, I think at the meetings in Arizona. Just from talking to him, he seems like a cool guy. He is definitely no nonsense. He is about his business. He keeps everybody in line. His track record speaks for himself. I will get to know him more since I will be on the team. It will be great.”

Draft rumours are the Dolphins might trade up high to get either Fisher or Joeckel and they're not interested in Lane Johnson at number 12.

Also they're supposedly looking to use their extra 2nd and 3rd to trade back into round 1 to get the top tight end in the draft Tyler whatsit or a safety like Matt Elam.

I'm not usually a fan of trading up, but the balance has swung so far the other way in terms of value you get, and with the rookie salary scale, I'm OK with it. Of those two, I'd rather have Joeckel...I don't know if I'd have too much confidence in someone who's only faced MAC competition.

Of course, whatever you do is a function of the competence of your brain trust, and we're dealing with Ireland here.
