Best King Crimson Album?

I've been listening to a great deal of King Crimson over the past weeks, and I've got to say: I'm loving every minute of it. Like most I first got into them through "In the Court of the Crimson King" which was one of my personal favorites over the past years, but its only recently that I've really gotten into them. I then listened to "In the Wake of Poseidon" which contrary to popular opinion, I think is just as good as "Court" then I moved onto "Red" which at first I wasn't a fan of. Afterwards I listened to their entire discography in a day, chronologically. I love each album with Beat and Discipline being exceptions , which I think are just ok.

Right now I'm torn between "In the Court of The Crimson King" "Red" and "Lark's Tongue in Aspic" as their best album, what do you guys think?

I have all the studio albums up to and including Discipline, along with Thrak.

If I had to rank them, it would go something like this:

1. Red (my favorite KC album, and one of my all time favorites)

2. Starless and Bible Black

3. Larks' Tongues In Aspic

4. Lizard

5. Discipline

6. In The Court of the Crimson King

7. In The Wake of Poseidon

8. Thrak

9. Islands

I still need to give Thrak and Islands more listens; hopefully they'll grow on me. After a couple listens, I wasn't overly impressed with either. The 3 Wetton albums are definitely my favorites though.

I am huge Crimson fan, here is my list:

1. Lizard

2. Red

3. Starless and Bible Black

4. ITCOTCK

5. Islands

6. In The Wake of Poseidon

7. Larks Tongues in Aspic

8. Thrak

9. Discipline

10. Construction of Light

11. The Power to Believe

12. Three of a Perfect Pair

13. Beat

I do not really listen to the Belew era stuff much these days. And yes, I did put Islands before Larks! Listen to the live album "Live at Summit Studios" to get a real appreciation for this era of the band.

Here's a rough ranking of the albums I own or know well otherwise:

Starless and Bible Black

Larks' Tongues in Aspic

The Power to Believe

In the Court of the Crimson King

Beat

Red

Lizard

Discipline

THRAK

In the Wake of Poseidon

However, In the Wake is still a pretty good album and THRAK I still rate probably 7-8 out of 10. :D

Ranking their 70's albums (since the post-70's stuff I've heard didn't really do much for me):

1. Lizard

2. In the Court of the Crimson King

3. Red

4. In the Wake of Poseidon

5. Larks' Tongues In Aspic

6. Starless and Bible Black

7. Islands

You'd rate Islands over Discipline, TOAPP & Beat? You are a madman. Madman.

Honestly, I haven't heard Discipline, TOAPP & Beat in quite a long time - I just remember that I didn't care for them. I've also heard The Power To Believe, and I think Thrak - they have their moments, but nothing that garnered repeat listens from me. Perhaps some of those truly are better than Islands. There's a reason that Islands was put so much lower than #6 on my list above. It's their only 70's studio album that I truly don't like.

For the last few years I have been backing up all my music onto DVDs and I'm now working on my madness inducing catalog of King Crimson recordings. I'm up to the end of the Fripp, Wetton, Bruford era and just got to USA. I cannot believe they improvised this song. It is so amazing and I hadn't heard it in years. I still have the vinyl and after a minute or two of listening I dug it out and played it very loud. It is incredible. I'm wallowing in King Crimson heaven.
